Relationship Between Color Characteristic and Reflectance Index by Ground-based Remote Sensor for Tobacco Leaves (연초 엽의 색 특성과 원격탐사 반사율지표의 상호관계)

  • To determine the critical level for optimum maturity of flue-cured tobacco leaves (KF118) at the stalk position from cutter to tips, the reflectance index using ground-based remote sensors and chlorophyll meter were investigated. The sensors estimated were Crop $Circle^{TM}$ (Holland Scientific), Green $Seeker^{TM}$ (Ntech Industries), Spectroradiometer (LICOR, LI-1800), Chlorophyll meter (SPAD502, Minolta), and Field $Scout^{TM}$ Chlorophyll meter (CM-1000, Spectrum). The L, a, b values and greenness for flue-cured leaf were measured and estimated for correlation with sensor's measurement of harvested leaf. On a reflectance curve of 340nm~1100 nm, the reflectance peaks on 550nm and 675 nm for the harvested leaf were lowered as change from light green to darker green. Darker green leaf harvested produced darker flue-cured leaf. The reflectance at 675 nm for flue-cured leaf decreased as greenness increased in the harvested leaf. This result means that the red edge band of 675 nm wavelength is related to the absorbance of chlorophyll for photosynthesis. The greenness of flue-cured leaf showed significantly positive correlation with the entire reflectance indexes for harvested leaf while the L value by colorimeter showed negative correlation with greenness of cured leaf. The critical level for optimum maturity of harvested leaf were less than 22, 135, and 0.43 for SPAD reading, CM-1000 reading, and gNDVI by Crop $Circle^{TM}$, respectively. Consequently, ground-based remote sensing providing a non-destructive real-time assessment of plant greenness could be a useful tool in the selection of optimum maturity of flue-cured tobacco leaves in relation to high quality of flue-cured tobacco.

Lesser known indigenous vegetables as potential natural egg colourant in laying chickens

  • Background: A six-week study involving two hundred and fifty (250) Harco Black layer birds at point of lay was conducted to investigate the effects of potential natural colorant on performance and Egg quality traits. The birds were assigned to five (5) dietary treatments, each containing supplements either of control, Baobab Leaf (BL), Waterleaf (WL), Red Pepper (RP), Canthaxanthin (CTX) at 40 g/kg feed and 50 mg/kg feed of natural and commercial colorants, respectively. Results: Performance records shows that there was no significant (p > 0.05) difference in feed intake across the supplements of Red pepper, Water leaf, Canthaxanthin and control diet, however, birds fed Baobab leaf treatment had a significantly lower (p < 0.05) feed intake value (94.07 g) when compared with other treatments. Body weight gain and Hen Day Production were not significant influenced (p > 0.05) by the dietary treatments, although laying hens fed Baobab leaf supplement had lowest mean HDP of 48.80%, while birds fed Red pepper and Water leaf supplement had an average value of 52.79%. There was no significant effect (p > 0.05) of colorants on egg external traits, compared with the control; birds fed Canthaxanthin treatment had higher mean egg weight (51.79 g), egg length (4.55 g), egg breadth (3.29 g); Red pepper treatment had highest mean shell thickness (0.29 g), however these differences were not significant (p > 0.05). Yolk height, Albumen height, Yolk index, and Haugh unit were not significantly affected (p > 0.05) across treatments. Yolk width was lowest (p < 0.05) in Baobab leaf treatment (2.54 cm); Red pepper, Water leaf and Canthaxanthin (2.89 cm, 2.62 cm and 2.89 cm respectively) were not significantly (p > 0.05) different from the control (2.73 cm). Yolk colour score was significantly highest (p < 0.05) in Red pepper treatment (7.50); Water leaf, Baobab leaf and Canthaxanthin ranged between 2.25-3.31 on the DSM yolk colour fan, Control treatment had the lowest yolk colour score (p < 0.05) of 1.31. Conclusion: The study showed Red pepper as a worthy alternative to commercial yolk colorant. Water leaf and baobab are not good substitutes for canthaxanthin as a yolk colourant.

Quality Characteristics of Bread Made with Flour Partly Substituted by Lotus Leaf Powder (연잎 분말 첨가 식빵의 품질 특성)

  • Bread made after replacement of commercial hard wheat flour with lotus leaf flour (2.5 - 7.5%, w/w) was tested for dough and baking qualities, and by sensory evaluation. The loaf volumes of bread baked with 5% and 7.5% lotus leaf flour were 87% and 80%, respectively, of control (wheat flour only); by contrast, the volume of bread baked with 2.5% lotus leaf flour was 5% greater than control. The hardness of breadcrumbs baked with 2.5% lotus leaf flour was 64.5 g on day 0, and compared with control bread, hardness increased more slowly during storage for 3 days when 5% or 7.5% lotus leaf flour was used. Moreover, dough hardness increased with increasing levels of lotus leaf flour. Lightness decreased with addition of lotus leaf flour, but redness and yellowness significantly increased, in proportion to lotus leaf flour levels. Sensory tests on 2.5% lotus leaf flour bread showed no significant difference compared with control.

Variation of Image Quality and Dose by Applying Multi-Leaf Collimator for Digital Mammography (디지털 유방촬영장치에서 다엽 조리개 적용으로 인한 화질과 선량의 변화)

  • Collimator has important functions with control primary X-ray that decrease radiation exposure dose for patients and reduce scatter ray and make better quality of image. But there are no regulations for X-ray mammography device of collimator, so widely used device adopt rectangularly controlled collimator. Though digital X-ray mammography device expand supply recently, rectangularly controlled collimator of film/screen mode still used. After searching for real condition of beam field with digital mammography, we made a multi-leaf collimator which is able to adjust the beam field in accordance with size and shape of breast, and we measuring up the transitions of image quality, average glandular dose(AGD) and, Dose area product(DAP). There are no significant differences between rectangularly controlled collimator and multi-leaf collimator, and DAP value decreased by 50.72%. As conclusion, there needs to expand the use of multi-leaf collimator for optimum adoption of beam field in digital mammography, and also need to develop an automatic regulation of beam field for reduce of exposure dose to patients.

Effects of Bamboo Charcoal and Bamboo Leaf Supplementation on Performance and Meat Quality in Chickens (대나무 숯과 대나무 잎의 급여가 육계의 생산성과 육질에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with bamboo charcoal (BC) and bamboo leaf (BL) on growth performance, feed intake, feed conversion efficiency, and meat quality in broiler chickens. Broiler chickens were fed for 30 days with a diet containing 0.5% bamboo charcoal or bamboo leaf. The results showed that the mortality rate during the study period was slightly lower in the BC and BL groups than the control group, while terminal weight and weight gain were significantly higher in the BC and BL groups than the control group. Dietary supplementation with BC or BL also improved feed conversion rate compared to chickens in the control group. Shear force was significantly lower in the BC and BL groups than that of the control group. The fat content of chickens fed with BC tended to decrease, while the ratio of unsaturated fat acid of chickens fed with BC or BL tended to increase, although without a statistically significant difference. Sensory evaluation revealed that overall acceptability was slightly higher in the BC and BL groups than the control group. There was no statistically significant change in the hematology and serum biochemistry parameters, compared with the control group in any group tested. The results of this experiment indicated that dietary supplementation with BC and BL may improve growth performance, feed conversion efficiency, and meat quality in broiler chickens.

Enhancement of Antioxidant Quality of Green Leafy Vegetables upon Different Cooking Method

  • Antioxidant rich green leafy vegetables including garden spinach leaf, water spinach leaf, Indian spinach leaf, and green leaved amaranth were selected to evaluate the effects of water boiling and oil frying on their total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), reducing power (RP), and antioxidant capacity. The results revealed that there was a significant increase in TPC, TFC, and RP in all the selected vegetables indicating the effectiveness of the cooking process on the antioxidant potential of leafy vegetables. Both cooking processes enhanced significantly (P<0.05) the radical scavenging ability, especially the oil fried samples showed the highest values. There is a significant reduction in the vitamin C content in all the vegetables due to boiling and frying except in the Indian spinach leaf. However, the present findings suggest that boiling and frying can be used to enhance the antioxidant ability, by increasing the bioaccessibility of health-promoting constituents from the four vegetables investigated in this study.

Evaluation of Root Characters Associated with Lodging Tolerance by Seedling Test in Rice

  • Rice seedling test was conducted to check the loging tolerance at ripening stage through evaluating the root characters. Thirteen Korean and foreign rice cultivars with direct seeding adaptable or high quality characteristics were grown in a cell pot and under submerged paddy. The root characters and pushing resistance of rice hill were determined at seedling and ripening stage, respectively. The diameter of crown root at the 7th and 8th leaf stages was thicker in lodging tolerance cultivars than those of others and showed significant-positive correlation with both pushing resistance and crown root diameter of mature plants. Also, the tensile strength of crown root at the 7th and 8th leaf stage showed highly positive correlation with the tensile strength of crown root of mature plants. The number of crown root at 7th leaf stage was significant-positively correlated with that of mature plant. The diameter of seminal root was not significantly correlated with the diameter of crown root throughout the whole growth stage. These results indicate that the diameter, tensile strength and number of crown root associated with root lodging tolerance can be detected with the seedling at about 7th or 8th leaf stage, and the seedling test using the cell pot is an useful and practical method to select lodging tolerant cultivars or lines of rice based on root characters, especially diameter of crown root.

  • The characteristics of $CO_2$ exchange between plant and human modules, absorption rate of NO$_2$, and growth of lettuce were examined in an urban-type plant factory(UPF). With 150 lettuce plants, $CO_2$ concentrations of plant module were 600 ~ 700$\mu$mol mol$^{-1}$ at average leaf weight of 130g.plant$^{-1}$ and 900~1100$\mu$mol.mol$^{-1}$ at 75g.plant$^{-1}$ for one and two persons' stay in the human module, respectively. When the air of 0.13, 0.30 and 0.45 $\mu$molㆍmol$^{-1}$ NO$_2$ in a human module was circulated ON/OFF 10/20min between the human and plant modules, $NO_2$ decrement in the chamber during 10 min was 0.040, 0.109, and 0.149 $\mu$mol, respectively. The lettuces grown at 0.45 $\mu$molㆍmol$^{-1}$ $NO_2$ during experimental period showed no significant differences in growth factors such as leaf width, leaf length, leaf area and fresh weigh, and in the quality between treated and control.

Selection of Resistant Hybrids of Atractylis Against Phytophthora drechsleri

  • Bioassay techniques using young leaves and roots were developed to screen resistance of Atractylis spp. against Phytophthora drechsleri. Among 638 plants collected from various regions of Korea from 1994 to 1996, 67 were pre-screened in fields naturally infested with P. drechsleri, which is the causal pathogen of rhizome rot of Atractylis. Among the pre-screened sources, 18 (ca. 26.8%) were highly resistant to the pathogen in leaf inoculation. In the root inoculation test, abundant sporangia were formed in susceptible plant roots, while only a few or no sporangia were produced on the roots which were found resistant in the leaf inoculation test. Among the selected resistant plants, A. japonica 96066 and 96104 were used to cross with another species, A. macrocephala 96362 that showed high yield with good quality of rhizome but susceptible to the pathogen. The F$_1$hybrids designated as HA03 turned out to be resistant to the pathogen, indicating that resistant gene(s) was inherited. Among intra-species hybrids of A. japonica, HA07 and HA09 were resistant to the pathogen in leaf inoculation and moderate in root inoculation. However, HA08 was susceptible in both inoculation tests. This result suggests that the parent material might be genetically heterogeneous. Further genetic study should be carried out to verify this phenomenon.

Analysis of Amadori Compounds in Tobacco Leaf by LC-MS/MS (LC-MS/MS를 이용한 담배 중 Amadori Compounds의 분석)

  • Amadori compounds(1-deoxy-1-amino-2-ketoses) are important precursors of color, flavor and aroma produced in foods. Amadori compounds occur naturally in tobacco. The contribution of amadori compounds to smoke quality has been (of) interest because of their roles of the Maillard reaction in the leaf chemistry. The amounts of these compound in tobacco are affected by the processes of aging, drying and storage conditions. In this study, eight compounds were chemically synthesized because amadori compounds (have not been sold commercially these days.) were not available for obtaining commercially. The aim of this study was to develop the analytical method of amadori compounds in tobacco leaf by the liquid chromatography mass spectrometry using triple quadrupole analyzer(LC-MS/MS). This method was simple, rapid, selective and sensitive, and eight amadori compounds were simultaneously and quantitatively analyzed within 20 minutes. This method showed excellent accuracy and precision. Recovery rates of amadori compounds ranged from 86% to 102%, with relative standard deviation(RSD) ranged from 2.6% to 5.9%. This method was applied to analysis of amadori compounds contents of tobacco leaves in different varieties. Furthermore, it was expected that the method could be extended to the analysis of other amadori compounds.
