The allelopathic effects of volatile substances from Chamaecyparis obtusa (S. et Z.) Endl. were examined on the germination and seedling growth of some plant species, and on the population growth of some microorganisms. The germination and seedling growth of the receptor plants were suppressed more severely by leaf and fruit essential oils than by those of other parts. Colonial growth of fungi was severely inhibited by essential oils extracted from leaves and fruits. The development of root hairs of the receptor plants was also severely inhibited by the essential oils. The cortical cells at the root tips of Lactuca sativa L. treated with essential oils showed contraction of the cytoplasm, resulting in plasma membranes becoming detached from the cell walls and the cells metamorphosing irregularly. Accumulation of lipid granules inside the contracted cytoplasm and degeneration of mitochondrial cristae were also observed.
Although a few recent taxonomic studies focusing on infraspecific taxa in each species of Isodon have been reported, a detailed taxonomic revision of the Korean Isodon taxa has yet to be performed. We investigated the morphological characters of Korean Isodon based on approximately 600 herbarium sheets from major herbaria in Korea and Japan. We identified characters which distinguish seven Korean Isodon taxa and created a key to Korean Isodon based on the results from this study and on recent studies of the Korean Isodon taxa. The following unique characters for several taxa were recognized: 1) dense non-glandular hairs in stems for I. inflexus var. canescens (over 70 ea/mm on one side of the stem), 2) dense glandular hairs on the abaxial surface of the leaf for I. serra (over $40ea/mm^2$), 3) protruding pistils and stamens from the corolla with the length of the protruding part longer than that of the lower lobe of corolla for I. japonicus, and 4) the presence of non-glandular hairs on the entire surface of the fruit of I. inflexus var. microphyllus. Based on this study, we recognized that there are four species, two varieties, and one forma of Isodon taxa in Korea.
We present simple methods for fabricating high aspect-ratio polymer nanostructures on a solid substrate by rigiflex lithography with tailored capillarity and adhesive force. In the first method, a thin, thermoplastic polymer film was prepared by spin coating on a substrate and the temperature was raised above the polymer's glass transition temperature ($T_g$) while in conformal contact with a poly(urethane acrylate) (PUA) mold having nano-cavities. Consequently, capillarity forces the polymer film to rise into the void space of the mold, resulting in nanostructures with an aspect ratio of ${\sim}4$. In the second method, very high aspect-ratio (>20) nanohairs were fabricated by elongating the pre-formed nanostructures upon removal of the mold with the aid of tailored capillarity and adhesive force at the mold/polymer interface. Finally, these two methods were further used to fabricate micro/nano hierarchical structures by sequential application of the molding process for mimicking nature's functional surfaces such as a lotus leaf and gecko foot hairs.
In this paper, a new hybrid species, Pulsatilla ${\times}$ yanbianensis H.Z. Lv, is named and described from the Yanbian area of Jilin Province in China. Molecular data confirm that this taxon is a result of natural hybridization between P. dahurica and P. cernua. As intermediate and mosaic phenotypes are expected for an interspecific hybrid, the leaves of P. ${\times}$ yanbianensis are fully expanded at the anthesis, resembling one of the parental species, P. daurica. However, the hybrid taxon is distinct from P. daurica by having reddish violet sepals and sterile fruits. Pulsatilla ${\times}$ yanbianensis also resembles the other parental species, P. cernua, in that it has dark red sepals and styles. The new hybrid, however, can be distinguished from P. cernua because it has leaf margins with short hairs and fully expanded leaves at the anthesis.
Phytoliths formed on the leaf-blades of the seventeen Oryza species were examined using back-scattered electron imaging. The resulting descriptions of the phytoliths became the basis for a new key to the species of the genus. This key includes features useful for specific identification related to the silica bodies originating from epidermal cells upon both the mid-vein and bulliform cell, as well as of phytoliths originating from papillae, prickle hairs, large and small trichomes, and stomatal apparatus. These detailed phytolith descriptions, back-scattered electron images, and keys to both adaxial and abaxial sides of leaves, can now be used in identifying phytoliths from archaeological samples as well as extant species of Oryza.

Using scanning electron microscope (SEM), we examined the trichomes on leaf and petiole and the epicuticular waxes on leaf surfaces for a total of 27 taxa representing two subtribes, Fragariinae and Potentillinae, of tribe Potentilleae (Rosaceae) in Korea. Four types of trichomes on adaxial and abaxial surface of leaves and petioles were identified. Type I (conical hirtellous) is the most common trichome type found in the majority of taxa in Fragariinae and Potentillinae. Type II (verruculose conical hirtellous) can be found only in Potentilla cryptotaeniae of sect. Conostylae of Potentillinae. Potentilla chinensis complex (sect. Conostylae) and P. egedii (sect. Letostylae) have type III trichome (crispate villous), while type IV (floccose villous) can be found in two species in sect. Conostylae, P. nivea and P. discolor. Both woolly hairs and conical hirtellous exist together in types III and IV. The same type of trichomes in leaves and petioles can be found across different subtribes and sections. In addition, different types of trichomes can be found even in a single species. Among the taxa which have type I trichome, the majority of subtribe Fragariinae and P. centrigrana and P. dickinsii complex have well developed epicuticular waxes on the surface of leaves. Sharing epicuticular waxes among the taxa across different subtribes appears to be correlated with their similar geographical distribution and ecological conditions. However, molecular phylogenetic study implies that the existence of epicuticular waxes could be also due to phylogenetic signal.
A comparative micromorphological study was examined on the leaves of the genus Glechoma and related genera (Nepetinae, Lamiaceae) by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to evaluate their significance in the taxonomy. The leaves of taxa Marmoritis, Nepeta sect. Glechomanthe, G. hederacea var. longituba (Korea) are revealed amphistomatic type, while the remnants of taxa had hypostomatic type. The size range of the guard cells is $12.50-28.75{\times}9.17-21.25{\mu}m$: the smallest one was found in M. pharicus ($12.50-15.83{\times}9.17-11.25{\mu}m$), while the largest one was measured to G. hederacea var. longituba (Korea: $28.75-28.88{\times}21.25-21.38{\mu}m$). The stomatal type of genera Agastache, Dracocephalum was mostly diacytic, however for the rest rarely together with anisocytic and anomocytic, except G. hederaca var. longituba (Korea), Meehania urticifolia by having combined with diacytic and anomocytic. The shapes of epidermal cells are differ from in abaxial and adaxial side, and dived with two types (e.g., platelet, stripe pattern). Five types (three glandular, two non-glandular hairs) of trichomes are distributed in leaves. Among trichomes, long and stalk capitates glandular trichome, subsessile glands are different from studied taxa so that leaf micromorphological characters are significance features in the taxonomy.

To explore on the defense strategies against hervivory of 67 broadleaved tree species, morphological characteristics of the leaf, leaf domatia structure and the number, herbivores insects and mites on the leaves, collected from the trees growing in Taean-gun, Chuncheongnam-do were investigated. 46 broadleaved tree species(68.7%) had the domatia structures, and 21 species including Quercus salicina and Magnolia grandiflora did not. 31 species including Juglans mandshurica and Carpinus laxiflora reveals tuft type, 12 species including Quercus dentata and Corylus heterophylla reveals pocket+tuft type, and 2 species, Sorbus alnifolia and Prunus yedoensis does pocket type, and Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki does pouch type. Domatia number per leaf proves the highest figures, 23.4/leaf for Quercus dentata. Plant defense strategies using leaf lower-surface trichomes of Magnolia grandiflora reveals dense villous, those of Populus alba and Vitis vinifera reveals dense pilose, that of Elaeagnus umbellata does dense scaly hairs, that of Pueraria lobata does dense strigose. Plant defense strategies using extrafloral nectaries were adapted 23 tree species(34.3%). Observed examples are Prunus tomentosa, Ficus carica, Viburnum dilatatum and Carpinus laxiflora. Predatory mites were observed on the leaves of 40 tree species(59.7%), and mean values of predatory mites was highest values 23.4/leaf in Quercus dentata. Minute arthropods destroying the leaf of broadleaved trees. are such as Periphyllus californiensis, P. viridis, Diaspididae sp., gall mites, thrips, and total numbers observed were odered gall mites, Diaspididae sp., aphids and thrips. Natural enemies of these hervivores arthropods are such as predatory mites, Chilocorus rubidus, Coccinella septempunctata and the nymph, Aphidius ervi. These results indicate that defense strategies including protective mutualisms may be frequent in the temperate broadleave trees.
The study investigates the correlation between the seasonal changes in the absorption of fine dusts and the fine structure of surface on each type of street tree, such as Quercus myrsinifolia, Quercus glauca, Quercus salicina, Camellia japonica, and Prunus × yedoensis in the southernareas of Korea. The absorption ranges of fine dust were 31.51~110.44 ㎍/cm2 in January, 23.20~79.30 ㎍/cm2 in November, 22.68~76.90 ㎍/cm2 in May, and 9.88~49.91 ㎍/cm2 in August. The absorption value was about 54.4% higher in January than in May. With the grooves and hairs on the leaf surface and lots of wax, Q. salicina seems related to the high absorption rate of fine dust for each fine dust particle size. The one with gloss and smooth leaf surface has a low amount of wax. C. japonica Prunus × yedoensisshowed a low absorption rate of fine dust in each season. Whereas the increase in porosity density, length, and leaf area size can be related to the reduced PM and increasedabsorption rate, the leaf surface roughness, total wax amount, and porosity width can be related to the increase in the PM absorption rate. There was also a high correlation between the total wax amount and absorption rate of the leaf surface at the size of PM0.2 than PM10 and PM2.5. These results imply that the quantitative and qualitative trais of leaf, such as wax amounts and leaf surface, can increase the absorption of fine dusts, and the small-sized particles seem to be highly adsorbed with the high wax amounts.
Objective of this study was to determine the Si distribution and extent of control of powdery mildew diseases of cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.). The distribution of silicon in the leaf epidermis of cucumber plants grown in hydroponic nutrient solutions supplemented with soluble silicates was examined using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The silicate absorbed from nutrient solution was translocated into cucumber leaves, and accumulated mainly in the cells surrounding the base of trichome hairs. Base cells surrounding the trichomes also had high levels of Si, Ca, and K. Si levels in the epidermal cells for low Si treatment were not detectable except in the trichome bases. Hyphal lengths of powdery mildew occurring on cucumber leaves cultivated in medium with high concentration of silicate were remarkably shorter than those of cucumber leaves cultivated with low concentration of silicate. There was a negative correlation between hyphal length of S. fuliginea and silicate concentrations.
