  • This study was conducted to get basic information of dry matter production and agronomic characteristics for increasing grain ripening in rice cultivar with large grains. Three cultivars which have different grain size were used. Of the two large grain cultivars, SR7796-3-1-5-1-l(SR7796F$_{7}$) had long culm and SR11269-13-3-4-2(SR11269F$_{6}$) had short culm. On the other hand, Tamjinbyeo was recommended cultivar had medium size of grain and culm. LAI was highest in Tamjinbyeo, followed by the SR11269F$_{6}$ and SR7796F$_{7}$, LAI decrement was higher in large grain cultivars than that of Tamjinbyeo after 20days after heading. Total dry weight(TDW) of areal part was highest in SR11269F$_{6}$, followed by the Tamjinbyeo and SR7796F$_{7}$. Dry weight (DW) of stem (leaf sheath+culm) at harvesting stage was decreased 15%, 12% in Tamjinbyeo, SR11269F$_{6}$, respectively, but was increased 5% in SR7796F$_{7}$ compared to heading stage. In distribution rate of each organ to TDW, distribution rate of leaf blade was low in large grain cultivar, but that of stem in Tamjinbyeo, SR7796F$_{7}$ and SR11269F$_{6}$ was 36%, 38% and 42%, respectively. In canopy architecture leaf blade weight was the highest 30~40cm, 40~50cm and 70~8Ocm above the ground in SR11269F$_{6}$, Tamjinbyeo and SR7796F$_{7}$, respectively. Range of panicle distribution in the canopy was 40cm in Tamjinbyeo, and was 70cm in large-grain cultivars. The results suggest that it has to take a growing interest in developing culture method for increasing LAI during growth stage, especially, around heading, in keeping green leaf till ripening stage and also in growing unformly plant within rice hill in large grain cultivars.cultivars.ltivars.

  • A total of 67 watermelon accessions which include 37 accessions from Korean and 27 accessions from Turkish germplasm and 3 accessions of other related species from USA were investigated for morphological characteristics. The UPOV descriptor list for 56 characters (6 seedlings, 4 plants, 11 leaves, 5 flowers, 23 fruits and 7 seeds) was used in characterization. In addition, eight quantitative characters, hypocotyl length, cotyledon width, cotyledon length, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, thickness of outer layer of pericarp and soluble solid content were also measured. The 56 qualitatively scored characters were analyzed by principle coordinate analysis (PCoA) while the eight quantitative ones were subjected to principle component analysis (PCA). Morphological characterization result demonstrated that the accessions displayed high morphological diversity(how much percent?). A high level of phenotypic diversity was observed from the results of morphological characterization. However, plant growth habit and leaf blade flecking showed constant characters for all of the accessions. The Korean and Turkish watermelon genotypes are diverse groups and can be separated by both multivariate analysis of morphological characters although the grouping was more apparent in PCoS results.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of split application of nitrogen(N) on development of vascular bundle(VB) and yield components of rice. Two cultivars were used in this study; IR58, an indica type and Shinunbongbyeim a japonica type. The number and total cross sectional area of the VB in the peduncle and leaf blade were more and bigger in N split application than 100 percent basal fertilizer. Nitrogen split application at necknode differentiation stage increased the number and size of the VB. Nitrogen split application resulted in increased panicle number with application of N before transplanting and at tillering stage; increased spikelets number with N application at necknode differentiation stage; and increased spikelet fertility and 1000 grain weight with N application at necknode differentiation and heading stages. Grain yield increased 7-10% in N split as compared to all basal application. The total cross sectional area of VB in peduncle closely correlated with the number of spikelets per panicle. Nitrogen management can have an impact on spikelet differentiation through more and bigger VB and increase grain yield potential.

  • In this study, we report a unrecorded plant on the Korean peninsula, Potamogeton × anguillanus Koidz. from Yeondangcheon (stream) in Yeondang-ri, Nam-myeon, Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon-do province. Potamogeton × anguillanus is a natural hybrid between P. wrightii Morong. and P. perfoliatus L. It is distinguished by its characteristic that the petiole is shorter than P. wrightii and that the leaf blade is narrower and longer than P. perfoliatus also, it didn't fully wrap the stem. Considering that P. × anguillanus is a natural hybrid, the name is given to it as 'Eol-chi-gi-dae-ga-rae'. We provide descriptions of the morphological characteristics, photographs, and key to allied taxa in Korea of P. × anguillanus.

  • Calli were induced from the explants of infloresence, petiole and leaf blade of Cnidium officinale on MS medium with 2.4-D, while embryogenic callus was induced only from inflorescence explants. Somatic embryos of 78 per explant were formed during subculture of the explants on medium without 2.4-D after culture on medium with 2 mg/L 2.4-D. Cotyledonary variation, cup-shaped cotyledon of 49% and other abnormal cotyledons of 13.5 % was observed on the somatic embryos. However this variation could be overcomed by the addition of activated charcoal onto culture medium. Somatic embryos at cotyledonary stage germinated on MS basal medium but the germination rate was very poor, blow 50 %. Somatic embryos on the medium with activated charcoal showed improved germinaton.

  • Morphological and molecular data from the nuclear ribosomal ITS regions were examined to reevaluate the taxonomic position of the Korean endemic species, Stewartia koreana Nakai ex Rehder (Theaceae). Comparing to its morphologically closely related S. pseudocamellia Maxim, S. koreana has diagnostic characters including a larger leaf blade (10 cm length and 5.5 cm wide) and a longer pedicel (2.5 cm length). In addition, S. koreana formed a different clade from S. pseudocamellia in the ITS trees. The morphological and ITS sequence data supported S. koreana as a Korean endemic species distinct from the closely related species, S. pseudocamellia.

  • Four kinds of leaves with different shapes of leaf blade were used as experimental materials to establish an optimum condition for treating leaves to obtain skeleton leaves. Effective concentration and length of soaking time in a hot NaOH solution, which resulted in high valued ornaments, were 60% (v/v) for 50 minutes for Acer buergerianum (palmatifid), 20% (v/v) for 50 minutes for Ilex cornuta (serrate), 20-60% (v/v) for 70 minutes for Quercus mongolia (lobed), and 20-40% (v/v) for 70 minutes for Quercus palustris (parted). Through a series of the process of soaking leaves in a hot NaOH solution, rinsing or brushing to remove mesophyll, drying, and dying, high quality ornaments could be obtained.

  • Effects on yields, yield components and nutrient content of potassium depression for two or three weeks at various growth stages were investigated in rice (var. Jinheung) under sand culture system.(K 40 ppm 1973) 1. Analysis of variance showed significant difference among treatments of both two-week (at p=0.01) and three-week depression (at p=0.05) in yield. 2. Most sensitive stage to potassium depression on yield appeared two weeks until heading (42% yield decrease) and sensitivity decreased the growth stage is apart from heading either before or after. During 30 days after transplanting two-week potassium depression increased yield, but three-week depression decreased yield. Until about 30 days after heading depression caused poor yield. 3. Root potassium involves in harvest index, filled grain ratio and grain weight with significant correlation and considerably in spikelet per panicle while potassium in leaf sheath+culm involves considerably in spikelet per panicle and panicle per hill. Relative total dry matter weight was significantly correlated with panicle per hill, spikelet per panicle and K or K/Ca+Mg only in leaf sheath+culm. The indications are that root potassium contributes for building sink and efficiency of structure while potassium in leaf sheat+culm primarily for building source, productive structure. 4. Relative yield was significantly correlated with potassium content in root and leaf sheath+culm and with K/Ca+Mg and its ratio before and after depression in root indicating that potassium depression occurs greatly in root and that K/Ca+Mg might have more important role than K content alone under depression. 5. Optimum level of $K_2O$ appears around 3% in leaf blade. 4% in leaf sheath+culm and 1% in root under the assumption that below these level the same content has the same role in relation to yield during growth. The K/Ca+Mg appeares to be 2.5 in root and should not decrease throughout the growth stages. 6. The increase of sodium content in plant by K depression was highest, especially in leaf sheath during the most insensitive period to K depression suggesting that insensitivity may be attributed to partial replacement of Na for K. Partial replacement seems very little in sensitive stage (later stage) and sensitive organ (root).

  • A comparative anatomical and ultrastructural study was undertaken to investigare on the leaf epidermis by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). On the basis of results from this study, it was grasped major characters of taxa and variation range of each character on the level of species, section and subgenus respectively. The shape of leaf epidermal cell was oblong to linear, which was varied by each taxon. Epidermal cell of taxa in sects. Microscordum, Anguinum, and Rhizirideum, which had wide leaf blade, oblong instead of linear shape in others examined taxa in this study. The leaf of taxa in sect. Anguinum was hypostomatic, while the rest of taxa had amphistomatic leaf. This was also one of characters which could discriminate taxa of sect. Anguinum from others. The guard cell in investigated taxa had not so much variation in the respect of its size. The number of stomata per unit area reduced by increasing size of epidermal cell, the fewest number of stomata per unit area was found in the taxa of sect. Anguinum. The type of stomatal apparatus of observed all taxa was anomocytic. It was found to know ultrastructural variation in the epidermal cell, like as patterns of sculpture on the cell wall, and features of deposition of wax by SEM. There were no depositions of wax in the taxa of sect. Microscordum and Anguinum, but fine thread-like structures which were parallel or cross to axis was found on the surface of epidermal cell respectively. The patterns of sculpture on the cell were prominent straight in sects. Recticulato-bulbosa and Rhizirideum, discontinuous line in the sect. Oreiprason. The epicuticular wax had been deposited on the surface of its epidermal cell in all taxa except sects. Microscordum and Anguinum.

  • Effect of tow or three week potassium depression on nutrient contents in two rice varieties, Jinheung (a leading local) and IR 667-Suwon 214 (high yielding tropical line), was investigated at various growth stages in water culture system for the nutritional elucidation of potassium top dressing. According to potassium content, potassium ratio beween leaf blade and leaf sheath plus culm, relative potassium content ($-k/+k{\times}100$) and balance between potassium and other nutrients (K/N or K/Ca+Mg) it could be concluded as follows: 1) Rice plants have three sensitive growth stages to potassium stress in the orther of ear formation stage (20 to 30 days before heading) early tillering (15 to 25 days after transplanting) and at heading. 2) IR 667 is more sensitive to potassium stress than Jinheung, especially in early stage due to lower uptake of potassium. 3) Leaf sheath of IR 667 appears to have a role as potassium reservoir to greater extent than that of Jinheung.
