To obtain information for the proper fertilization management of cut-flower roses, the amount of macro and micro elements absorbed by cut-flower roses from soil for a year was investigated. Three cut-flower rose cultivars which are called 'Grandgara', 'Nobless', and 'Centina' were transplanted to a sandy loam soil, N-P-K standard fertilization was applied to the soil, and drip irrigation was done at the level of 10 kPa soil moisture tension. There was not significantly different in the harvest amount of cut-flower rose between 'Grandgara' and 'Nobless', but the harvest yield of 'Centina' was about 63% level when compared to that of 'Grandgara'. Considering seasonal changes in the content of nutrients in plant, parts, the uptake of untrients was higher in winter season than that in spring and summer seasons. Except for 'Centina', the nutrient amount removed from plant parts of 'Grandgara' and 'Nobless' increased with the sequence of floral part < stem < leaf, indicating that it is more dependent on biomass yield than on the content of nutrients in each plant part. The ratio of N/K amount absorbed by 'Nobless' and 'Centina' was 1.13 and 1.28. respectively, lower than 1.68 of 'Grandgara', showing that the requirement for K is greater in 'Nobless' and 'Centina' than in 'Grandgara'. The use efficiency of nutrients by cut-flower roses ranged from 39 to 64% in nitrogen, 5 to 9% in phosphorus, and 37 to 67% in potassium. It suggests that the requirement for P in cut-flower roses is very low.

We studied on the effects of slurry composting and biofiltration liquid fertilizer (SCBLF) on growth of two-year-old poplar clones planted in a reclaimed land mounding soil. The soil on the experimental site had lower concentrations of both exchangeable cations and salinity than before reclamation. However, the content of organic matter was low compared with the most soils. We applied SCBLF to the poplars six times and 5 L in each time for 80 days. Ten clones of six poplar species or hybrids were tested in this study: Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa(Clivus, 72-30, 72-31, Bongwha1), P. deltoides ${\times}$ P. nigra(Dorskamp), P. deltoides(Lux) ${\times}$ P. deltoides(Harvard)(97-19), P. euramericana(Eco28, I-476), P. nigra ${\times}$ P. maximowiczii(62-2) and P. Koreana ${\times}$ P. nigra var. italica(Suwon). Growth performance varied more among clones than among species. Average height growth of treated plots was 18% greater than control, and clones Clivus, 97-19, Eco28 and Dorskamp were more vigorous than other clones. Diameter at breast height in treated plots was 41% greater than control, and 97-19, Dorskamp, Eco28 and Clivus were the four best clones in this respect. Mean leaf area of treated trees was 26% greater for control trees. Chlorophyll content was similar between treated and controlled trees. Total nitrogen values in leaves were much higher in treated trees 18%. SCBLF treatment on poplars planted in reclaimed land helped tree growth.
Application of phytoremediation in the polluted area to remove undesirable materials is a complex and difficult subject without detailed investigation and experimentation. We investigated the accumulation patterns of cadmium and lead in plants naturally grown, the bioavailability of plants to accumulate these toxic metals and the responses of P. thunbergii to cadmium and lead. The soil samples contained detectable lead (<$17.5_\mu$g/g), whereas cadmium was not detected in the soils of study area. The whole body of Persicaria thunbergii contained detectable lead (<320.$8_\mu$g/g/g) but cadmium was detected only in the stem (<7.$4_\mu$g/g/g) and root (<10.$4_\mu$g/g/g) of P. thunbergii. Cadmium was not detected in Trapa japonica and Nymphoides peltata, whereas lead was detected in T. japonica (<323.$7_\mu$g/g/g) and N. peltata (<177.$5_\mu$g/g/g). Correlation coefficient between lead content in soil and in these plant samples represented positive correlation. The total content of lead in each plant sample increased in the order of N. peltata$\leq$P. thunbergii

This study was conducted to evaluate the properties of mixtures of mixed organic fertilizer (MOF) and various organic sources such as livestock manure compost (LMC), dried compost of poultry manure (CPM), dried food waste powder (FWP) and amino acid by-product fertilizer (ABF) and their influences on growth of lettuce and Chinese cabbage. The content of N, P2O5 and K2O of mixture of MOF, LMC and FWP (MLF) was 3.6~3.9%, 2.1~2.2% and 1.3~1.4%, respectively. Lettuce dry weight of MLF3 treatment blending with MOF (60%), LMC (10%) and FWP (30%) was increased by about 29% than that of MOF. The content of N, P2O5 and K2O of mixture of MOF, CPM, FWP and ABF (MCFA) was 4.5~4.7%, 1.7~1.9% and 1.3~1.4%, respectively. Compared to MOF, growth factors of lettuce and Chinese cabbage in the MCFA treatments were not significantly deferent. These results indicated that MLFs and MCFAs, the mixtures of respectively organic sources and MOF, could be applied as orgnic fertilizer in the cultivation of lettuce and Chinese cabbage, and were expected that LMC and ABF might be used as another sources of organic fertilizer.
The object of this study is to investigate the quality change of sweet basil grown with selenium(Se) in hydroponic culture. Sweet basil was cultured with 1 fold herb nutrient solution as suggested by European vegetable R & D Center in Belgium. Before three weeks harvest, sodium selenate(N $a_2$Se $O_4$) was supplied to 2 and 4 mg. $L^{-1}$ in the nutrient solution. Sweet basil was stored at 1$0^{\circ}C$ using 40um ceramic film and PET (polyethylene terephalate) for 15 days in modified atmosphere(MA) storage condition. The weight loss of sweet basil was higher in non-treatment compared to Se treatments in both of two films but it was decreased over 5% in PET treatment. Se concentrations in leaf tissues increased in the response to the treated levels of N $a_2$Se $O_4$concentrations, and this tendency was appeared similar results after storage. There was no significant effect of packing materials on volatilization of Se in sweet basil. The total chlorophyll and essential oil content was increased with increasing N $a_2$Se $O_4$concentration in nutrient solution. The amount of volatilization flavor was not higher at N $a_2$Se $O_4$4mg. $L^{-1}$ treatment compare to others during storage. Se content was 112.73 ug. $g^{-1}$ dry mass at 2 mg. $L^{-1}$ treatment before storage and the decrease of Se content was observed by 50% at 15 days after storage. The condition, which N $a_2$Se $O_4$2mg. $L^{-1}$$^{plement}$ in nutrient solution during growth stage and stored with 40um ceramic film on 1$0^{\circ}C$are acceptable for maintaining of sweet basil quality. Moreover it can be a proper Se concentration for human health. Overall, Se treatment in nutrient solution has effect on promoting and maintaining quality of herb during storage life. Also, there was not significant change of essential oil compounds by volatilization of Se.mpounds by volatilization of Se.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of concentrated pig slurry and byproduct liquid fertilizer on the growth and yield of chinese cabbage. The experiment was conducted in a rain-shelter house which was installed in the agriculture farm. Plants were fertilized with concentrated slurry (CS), byproduct fertilizer (BF), mixture of concentrated slurry and byproduct liquid fertilizer (CS+BF), combined organic and chemical fertilizer (CS+BF+BF) and chemical fertilizer (CF) as control. 1. The pH level of byproduct liquid was decreased from the 3rd to the 7th day and increased 9 day to 14th day, but pH of concentrated slurry (CS) was not greatly varied. EC of concentrated slurry (CS) and byproduct liquid was increased gradually during the fermentation. 2. The concentrated slurry (CS) was low in phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, rich in potassium and unbalanced as a low nitrogen and high potassium. But byproduct liquid fertilizer was balanced in nitrogen and potassium ratio. 3. The leaf number, head height, head width of chinese cabbage in treatment with organic and chemical fertilizer (CS+BF+N) showed significant difference compared with control. The plant and head weight of chinese cabbage in treatment of concentrated slurry was severely decreased, but that in treatment organic and chemical fertilizer (CS+BF+N) were increased 8, 10% compared with control chemical fertilizer (CF), respectively. 4. The content of $K_2O$ in plant tissue and in soil was increased after using concentrated slurry. On the other hand, mineral content of except $K_2O$ did not differ significantly between any of the treatments. In conclusion, organic and chemical fertilizer (CS+BF+N) could improve growth and head weight of chinese cabbage.
1. Two desert perennial plant species (Lycium andersonii Gray and Atriplex confertifolia (Torr. & Frem) Wats.) were grown in soil in a glasshouse with different sources of Na ($NO_3{^-}$, $Cl^-$, $H_2PO_4{^-}$) to evaluate their effects upon cation-anion balance in the plants. 2. Each anion greatly increased in leaf with only minor, if any, interactions with other anions 3. The miliequivalent sum of anions measured (N. P. Cl), increased in each plant part with the soil applications. 4. Simultaneously there were usually modest increases in the me. sum of cations. 5. The cation-anion ratio was decreased markedly when $NaNO_3$ was added. The ratio was usually over one. 6. Maximum content of Cl and N in leaves with L. andersonii. was 13.5%, and 6.37% respectively, when each was added. 7. Sodium concentrations were higher for the Atriplex species than for L. andersonii. 8. There were some compensations among other cations as sodium was increased, so that a somewhat constant sum of cations was maintained although there were significant differences among different sources of Na. 9. L. andersonii appeared to be an accumulator of Li.

Sedum kamtschaticum has been used as one of the native valuable plants for ornamental purpose. This experiment was conducted to find out the optimum media for pot cultured Sedum kamtschaticum using peatmoss and coir-based mixtures. Four mixtures such as peatmoss:perlite(5:5, v/v), peatmoss:perlite(7:3, v/v), coir:perlite(5:5, v/v), and coir:perlite(7:3, v/v) were used. Plants were irrigated with a Sonneveld solution in an ebb & flow system. The content of T-N, K, and Ca in the peatmoss-based media was higher than those of the coir-based media. The concentration of T-N, K, and Ca in the shoots of Sedum kamtschaticum increased when plants were cultured with peatmoss-based media. In the peatmoss-based media, plant growth, such as number of branches, leaf length and shoot fresh and dry weights, were significantly increased than those of plant grown in the coir-based media. As the results, the optimum media for pot cultured Sedum kamtschaticum in an ebb & flow system was considered to be the peatmoss-based mixtures.
Some stress for a plant could be detected to a certain degree by plant physiological measuring technique of the state of the art. The capability of early detection of my measuring system depends on kind of plant and kind and level of stress. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the capability of several fast and intact type plant stress detection systems to detect nitrogen deficiency of cucumber in the field. A series of experiment was carried out with four kinds of intact type measuring devices - a chlorophyll content meter, a chlorophyll fluorescence measurement system, an infrared thermometer and an optical spectrometer. The experiments resulted that the chlorophyll content meter could detect the stress of N deficiency at a confidence level higher than 95% on 3rd day for the earliest case and the detection of high precision was possible from 7th day after the stress was applied. The chlorophyll fluorescence measurement system detected the stress at a confidence level higher than 95% on 3rd day for the earliest case but the detection was not as much precise as the chlorophyll content meter. Leaf temperature measurement noted very poor results to detect the stress. Using the spectrometer, sensitive wavelength regions to detect the stress were searched and found out as 562∼564 nm, 700∼724 nm and 1,886∼1,894 nm. With the spectrometer using any of wavelength within the sensitive wavelength region, detection of the stress at a confidence level higher than 95% was possible from 3rd or 4th day after the stress was applied.

Development of T. urticae was studied on the leaves of eggplant grown in hydroponics with nitrogen contents of 5 mM, 10 mM, 30 mM, and 60 mM. As the nitrogen level in hydroponics increased, it also increased in the plant whereas that of K, Ca, and Mg decreased. More nitrogen in hydroponics resulted in increased contents of water and crude protein, and decreased ash, carbohydrates, and fibers within the plant. Biomass was the heaviest as 989.5 g at 10 mM and the lightest at 60 mM. Leaf thickness and the content of chlorophyll increased as the content of nitrogen increased. Laboratory leaf disc tests obtained from plants grown at various nitrogen levels revealed that feeding and oviposition preferences of T. urticae were high at 30 mM and low at 5 mM. Ratio of damaged leaf by naturally occurring T. urticae on eggplants of 99 days post-transplant in the greenhouse was the highest as 98% at 60 mM. Degrees of damage on eggplants with and without T. urticae infestation turned up more as the differences in the levels of nitrogen in the hydroponics get bigger. No definite differences in the rate of T. urticae development was found between nitrogen treatment levels but, mortalities in immature stages dropped as the nitrogen levels went up. Adult longevity was the longest of 11.9 for female and 6.9 days for male at 60 mM. Oviposition period was also the longest as 11.7 days at 60 mM and shortened as the level of nitrogen decreased. The number of eggs oviposited was the most as 144.4 at 60 mM while it was the least as 41.0 at 5 mM. Sex ratio was 0.75 in favor of female at 10 mM. $R_o$ and T increased, no trends were detected in $r_m\;and\;{\lambda}$, while Dt decreased as the levels of nitrogen went up.
