  • Response surface methodology was applied to the processing conditions to investigate the physicochemical properties of ramie porridge. In the processing conditions based on the central composite design with the addition of ramie leaf powder (0-4 g) and water (700-1100 g), the coefficients of determination (R2) of the models were above 0.9141 for the physicochemical properties, above 0.7627 for the Hunter color parameters, and above 0.8975 for the rheological properties. The soluble solid content, viscosity, and gumminess of the sample decreased significantly with an increase in the water added, whereas the spreadability and adhesiveness increased significantly. The Hunter color L value of the sample decreased significantly with an increase in the amount of ramie leaf powder added, whereas the Hunter b value increased significantly. The estimated maximum viscosity of the ramie porridge was shown to be 24,643 cp when 1.90 g ramie leaf powder and 700.24 g water were added; the estimated maximum lightness of the ramie porridge was shown to be 59.11 when 0.02 g ramie leaf powder and 869.30 g water were added; and the estimated maximum gumminess of the ramie porridge was shown to be 21.46 g when 2.12 g ramie leaf powder and 700.35 g water were added.

  • Zoysiagrass, especially Jungji implicating medium-leaf type zoysiagrass has been widely used in South Korea recently. This study was carried out to classify 36 selected medium-leaf type zoysiagrass accessions compared to 5 basic zoysiagrass species using RAPDs. Morphological characteristics such as leaf width, leaf angle, leaf sheath length, existance of trichomes and stolon color were measured as useful characteristics for identification of species in Zoysia genus. Nineteen RAPD markers were identified using 8 selected random primers. The dissimilarity coefficient of variants ranged from 0 to 0.736. Three zoysiagrass groups were clustered by dissimilarity coefficient analysis. Group 1 consisted of Z. japonica and some US varieties including 'Zenith' and 'Meyer'. Group 2 consisted of Z. sinica, Z. macrostachya and Korean commercial varieties such as 'Anyang', 'Samdeock', and 'Pyeongdong' medium-leaf type grasses. Group 3 was genetically distinct from Group 1 and Group 2, and included Z. matrella and Z. tenuifolia. 'Anyang', 'Samdeock', and 'Pyeongdong' medium-leaf type zoysiagrasses showed very close genetic relationship with Z. sinica and Z. macrostachya.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the desirable mixture ratio of Rubus coreanus Miquel leaf powder to rice flour for the preparation of sulgidduk. The moisture of samples raged from 41.92% to 38.21%. The addition of Rubus coreanus Miquel leaf powder in the Sulgidduk tended to decrease the lightness (L) in Hunter color value, but to increase the redness (a) and yellowness (b). With increasing Rubus coreanus Miquel leaf powder level, the hardness of the samples decreased and their springiness, cohesiveness and chewiness increased. In sensory evaluation, the addition of 5% Rubus coreanus Miquel leaf powder showed the best score in taste and overall preference. Therefore, these results suggested that the addition of 5% Rubus coreanus Miquel leaf powder could be applied for making Rubus coreanus Miquel leaf powder sulgidduk.

  • Leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L., var. crispa) packed in $20{\mu}m$ LDPE (perforated), $20{\mu}m$ LDPE, $30{\mu}m$ HDPE, and $40{\mu}m$ LDPE pouches was stored at $4^{\circ}C,\;10^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$. The quality of leaf lettuce during the storage was investigated in terms of weight loss, color, soluble solids content, texture and sensory properties. Leaf lettuce exhibited the highest storage stability at $4^{\circ}C$. Shelf-life of the packed leaf lettuce was prolonged approximately $10{\sim}15$ times in comparision with that of the unpacked under all temperature conditions. Among the packed leaf lettuce, self-life in $20{\mu}m$ LDPE (perforated) and $20{\mu}m$ LDPE pouches was relatively short mainly due to discoloration and deterioration. On the other hand, the quality of the leaf lettuce packed in $30{\mu}m$ HDPE and $40{\mu}m$ LDPE pouches was kept well during the storage. Particularly, $40{\mu}m$ LDPE pouches conferred the shelf-life superior to other film pouches.

  • During curing of aromatic tobacco leaves, coloring temperatures were set at 26, 30, 34, 38 and $42^{\circ}C$, and also leaf drying temperatures were established at 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively, to investigate the thermal effect on characteristics of cured leaves. Appearance of yellow color from green was accelerated, the contents of non-volatile organic and higher fatty acids in leaves tended to increase with the higher yellowing temperature. Quality by price per kg was best at 45-$50^{\circ}C$ and score of smoking test was highest at 40-$50^{\circ}C$ during leaf drying stage. The concentrations of non-volatile organic acids and volatile essential oil inclined to decrease, but a reverse in this trend with higher fatty acids as temperature increased during leaf drying stage. The difference of other components was discussed.

  • In 1991, the leaf brown spot of ivy-aureus (Scindapsus aureus) was found in Taejon and Seoul, Korea. The symptoms were appeared as dark-brown spots. The lesions were often surrounded by yellowish halos. These spots were enlarged to circular or elliptical in shape and dark-brown to black in color with slightly elevated in margin and sunken in center. The pathogenic bacteria were isolated from the diseased leaf of ivy-aureus were identified as Erwinia chrysanthemi on the basis of bacterial characteristics therefore, we would like to propose to the name of ivy-aureus disease caused by E. chrysanthemi as“bacterial brown rot of ivy-aureus”hereafter.

  • The influence of ploidy level on agronomic characteristics in italian ryegrass, Lolium multiflorum Lam, italicum, was studied using diploids (2x) and tetraploids (4x) on the upland of Livestock Experiment Station, Suweon. The results are summarized as follow: 1. Tetraploid cultivars are in general dark green in leaf color and strong glittered. 2. Diploid cultivars are more resistant to cold than tetraploids but degree of resistance to cold depends on cultivars. The di-and tetraploids did not differ in summer survival and coldand heat resistance of di-Itetraploid cultivars were not related. 3. Tetraploid cultivars have larger leaf-blades, more rapid growth and higher leaf ratio to stem by heading than diploids. 4. Tetraploids possess significantly lower dry matter content than diploids. 5 . Fresh- and dry weight of tetraploids are similar with that of diploids but tetraploids are more leafy than diploids. 6. Seasonal yield depends more on the type of the cultivar than on its tetraploid nature.

  • This study compared RGB color images with canopy light interception (LI) and leaf area index (LAI) measurements for low cost and low labor. LAI and LI were measured from vertical gap fraction derived from top of digital image in soybean canopy cover (cv Daewonkong, Deapongkong and Pungsannamulkong). RGB color images, LAI, and LI were collected from V4.5 stage to R5stage. Image segmentation was based on excess green minus excess red index (ExG-ExR). There was a linear relationship between LAI measured with LI (r2=0.84). There was alinear relation ship between LI measured with canopy cover on image (CCI) (r2=0.94). There was a significant positive relationship(r2=0.74) between LAI and CCI at all grow ingseason. Therefore, it is expected that in the future, the RGB color image could be able to easily measure the LAI and the LI at low cost and low labor.
