The objective of this study is to investigate the removal of heavy metal by using the coprecipitation of barium sulfate. Several parameters governing the efficiency of the coprecipitation method were evaluated by the pH of sample solution, amount of coprecipitant, and addition of sulfide for the removal of As(V), Cd(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), Cu(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II) metal ions ($10{\mu}g/ml$ each). The coprecipitation was about 80% - 95% only for lead at low pH but under 10% for other ions. The amount of removal was about 95% - 100% for Cd, Hg, Pb, Cu in the all pH range by the addition of sulfide with barium sulfate but As(V) and Cr(III, VI) ions were not affected by the same conditions.
A new series of highly water soluble platinum(II) complexes[Pt(II)(DL-2-hydroxy-3-methylbutyrate)(trans-l-1,2-dimninocyc1ohexane)] (PC-1) and [Pt(II)DL-2-hydroxy-3-methylbutyrate](cis-1,2-diaminocyclohexane)](PC-2) were synthesized and characterized by their elemental analysis and by various spectroscopic techniques [infrared(IR), $^{13}C$-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)]. In vitro antitumor activity of new Pt(II)complexes was tested against MKN-45, MKN/ADM and MKN/CDDP human gastric adenocarcinoma cell lines using colorimetric MTT[3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide] assay for cell survival and proliferation. PC-1 and PC-2 showed active against MKN-45/P, MKN/ADM and MKN/CDDP human gastric cancer cell lines, and the antitumor activity of these compounds were comparable or superior to that of cisplatin. The nephrotoxicities of PC-1 and PC-2 were found quite less then that of cisplatin using MTT and [$^3H$] thymidine uptake tests in rabbit proximal tubule cells, human kidney cortical cells human renal cortical tissues. Based on these results, these novel platinum(II) complex compounds(PC-1 & PC-2) represent a valuable lead in the development of the new anticancer chemotherapeutic agents capable of improving antitumor activity and low nephrotoxicity.
The adsorption charateristics of lead(II) ions on Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus arrhizus were investigated. Adsorption amount of A. niger and R. arrhizus was about 95 mg/g and 25 mg/g, respectively. These biomass was approached to adsorption equilibrium within reaction time of 1hr because of their high reactivity. The uptake of lead ion by A. niger was less sensitivity than it by R. arrhizus on the inhibition effect of alkali metals and the decreasing ratio of uptake of lead ion of A. niger and R. arrhizus by inhibition effect of alkali metals was 37% and 50%, respectively. In pre-treatment on these biomass, NaOH treatment was contributed high adsorption capacity to these biomass. Then, adsorption amount of A. niger and R. allhizus was increased about 25 mg/g and 10 mg/g, respectively. In isotherm for the adsorption of lead ion based on Freundlich equation, 1/n value of A. niger and R. ar고izus was calculated the range of 0.28-0.56 and 0.44-0.67, respectively.
We prepared capsules containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Zoogloea ramigera cells for the removal of lead(II) and cadmium ions. Microbial cells were encapsulated and cultured in the growth medium. The S.cerevisiae cells grown in the capule did not leak through the capsule membrane. The dried cell density reached to 250 g/l on the basis of the inner volume of the 2.0 mm diameter capsule after 36 hour cultivation. The dry whole cell expolymer density of encapsulated Z.ramigera reached to 200 g/L. The capsule was crosslinked with triethylene tetramine and glutaric dialdehyde solutions. The cadmium uptake of encapsulated whole cell expolymer of Z.ramigera was 55mg Cd/g biosorbent. The adsorption line followed well Langmuir isotherm. The lead uptake of the encapsulated S. cerevisiae was about 30 mg Pb/g biomass. The optimum pH of the lead uptake using encapsulated S. cerevisiae was found to be 6. Freundlich model showed a little better fit to the adsorption data than Langmuir model 95 percent of the lead adsorbed on the encapsulated biosorbents was desorbed by the 1 M HCl solution. The capsule was reused 50 batches without loosing the metal uptake capacity. And the mechanical strength of the crosslinked capsule was retained after 50 trials.

Polymeric electrodes for lead ion based on N,N'-bis-thiophen-2-ylmethylene-pyridine-2,6-diamine as an ion carrier were prepared. The membrane electrode (m-3) containing o-NPOE as a plasticizer and 50 mol% additive of ionophore gives an excellent Nernstian response (29.59 mV/decade) and the limit of detection of ?log a (M) = 5.74 to Pb2+ in Pb(NO3)2 solution at room temperature. The prepared electrode provided good sensitivity and outstanding selectivity and response for Pb2+ over a wide variety of other metal ions in pH 7.0 buffer solutions. The good sensitivity and selectivity towards lead ion are attributed to the strong complexation of lead ion to N,N'-bis-thiophen-2-ylmethylene-pyridine-2,6-diamine which has geometrically the proper cavity to coordinate to the ligand.

Safety stocks constitute one of the major means of dealing with the uncertainties associated with variation in demand and lead time. Adeguate safety facilitate production activities and help to assure customers if good service on the other hand, carrying safety storks ties up working capital on goods that sit idle. The major problem of safety stocks management thus of consists of trying to achieve an optimal balance between the other carrying cost and the costs of stock shortage. Therefore, this study aims to find safety stock level of the fixed reorder quantity system and the fixed reorder cycle system of minimizing total cost when both demand and lead time are variable. (The distribution of demand and lead time is a mere assumption that follows the normal distribution) The results can be summarized as follows. i) Safety factor on the safety stock is determined by carrying cost and the costs of stock shortage: An optimal safety stick=the costs of stork shortage($C_s$) (the carrying cost($C_h$)+the costs of stock storage($C_s$). ii) The safety stock level of the fixed reorder quantity system is ($a{\;}_p\sqrt{L}{\sigma}$) under uncertainties. iii) The safety stock level of the fixed reorder cycle system is ($a{\;}_p\sqrt{R+L{\sigma}}$) under uncertain demand and constant lead time. ($a{\;}_p\sqrt{L{\sigma}_d{\;^2+{\mu}^2L{\sigma}^2}$) under demand and lead time uncertainties.
The effect of Mn(II) concentration on the anodic reactions occurring on a Pb-Ag electrode in sulfuric acid solutions has been studied by potentiostatic oxidation in the potential range of 1.8 to 2.0 V. High oxidation potentials and low initial concentrations of Mn(II) resulted in higher concentrations of soluble Mn(III) ions which were obtained from spectrophotometric analysis of the solution after oxidation. $MnO_2$ was deposited on the electrode by electrochemical oxidation of Mn(II) at 1.8 and 1.9 V, while it was formed by disproportionation of Mn(III) at 2.0 V. No $PbO_2$ was formed in the presence of Mn(II) during potentiostatic oxidation treatment for two hours at 1.8 V. Chemical reduction of $PbO_2$ with Mn(II) led to a decrease in the amount of $PbO_2$ as Mn(II) concentration increased at 1.9 and 2.0 V.
Background: All nasal bone fractures have the potential for worsening of olfactory function. However, few studies have studied the olfactory outcomes following reduction of nasal bone fractures. This study evaluates posttraumatic olfactory dysfunction in patients with nasal bone fracture before and after closed reduction. Methods: A prospective study was conducted for all patients presenting with nasal bone fracture (n=97). Each patient consenting to the study underwent the Korean version of Sniffin' Sticks test (KVSS II) before operation and at 6 month after closed reduction. The nasal fractures were divided according to the nasal bone fracture classification by Haug and Prather (Types I-IV). The olfactory scores were compared across fracture types and between preoperative and postoperative settings. Results: Olfactory dysfunction was frequent after nasal fracture (45/97, 46.4%). Our olfactory assessment using the KVSS II test revealed that fracture reduction was not associated with improvements in the mean test score in Type I or Type II fractures. More specifically, the mean posttraumatic Threshold, discrimination and identification score decreased from 28.8 points prior to operation to 23.1 point at 6 months for Type II fracture with septal fracture. Conclusion: Our study has revealed two alarming trends regarding post-nasal fracture olfactory dysfunction. First, our study demonstrated that almost half (46.4%) of nasal fracture patients experience posttraumatic olfactory dysfunction. Second, closed reduction of these fractures does not lead to improvements olfaction at 6 months, which suggest that olfactory dysfunction is probably due to factors other than the fracture itself. The association should be further explored between injuries that lead to nasal fracture and the mechanism behind posttraumatic olfactory dysfunction.
Humic acids are macromolecules originated from natural water, soil, and sediment. The characteristics of humic acid enable it to change the distribution of metals as well as many kinds of organic contaminants and to determine the sorption of them from soil solution. To see the effect of humic acid on the removal rate of organic contaminants and heavy metals, batch-scale experiments were performed. As a natural geosorbent, black shale was used as a sorbent media, which showed hight sorption capacity of trichloroethylene (TCE), lead, cadmium and chromium. The effect of sorption-desorption, pH, ionic strength and the concentration of humic acid was taken into consideration. TCE sorption capacity by black shale was compared to natural bentonite and hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) modified bentonite. The removal rate was good and humic acid also sorbed onto black shale very well. The organic part of humic acid could effectively enhance the partition of TCE and it act as an electron donor to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Cationic metal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) also removed from the water by black shale. With 3 mg/L of humic acid, both Pb(II) and Cd(II) were removed more than without humic acid. That could be explained by sorption and complexation with humic acid and that was possible when humic acid could change the hydrophobicity and solubility of heavy metals. Humic acid exhibited desorption-resistivity with black shale, which implied that black shale could be an alternative sorbent or material for remediation of organic contaminants and heavy metals.

This paper deals with a computer simulation for the stochastic inventory system in which the decision rules are associated with the problem of forecasting uncertain demand, lead time, and amount of shortages. The model consists of mainly three parts; part I$\cdots$the model calculates the expected demand during lead time through the built-in subrou tine program for random number generator and the probability distribution of the demand, part II$\cdots$the model calculates all the possible expected shortages per lead time period, part III$\cdots$finally the model calculates all the possible total inventory cost over the simulation period. These total inventory costs are compared for searching the optimal inventory cost with the best ordering quantity and reorder point. An application example of the simulation program is given.
