  • The purpose of this study is to test the effects of electrolyzed water treatment on dried-laver Pyropia sp. processing facilities to control microbial contamination. Following the progression of the process to the next step, as well as during the lapse between process operating hours, the contamination level of total viable cell counts (TVC) and total coliform (TC) of laver increased. The TVC increased during the aging step, and after the molding-drying steps were completed, it increased by approximately 2.0 log CFU (colony forming unit)/g. Freshwater used for processing in April had a TVC of 4.31 log CFU/mL, which was more polluted than 2.61 log CFU/mL of seawater. Electrolyzed water was used to treat the sponge used in the laver-molding process, which resulted in a 2 log CFU/mL decrease. The TVC of dried-laver decreased by 1 to 2 log CFU/g when electrolyzed water was applied to the process. In conclusion, application of electrolyzed water in dried-laver processing was shown to be effective in reducing the microbiological contamination of the final product.

  • In order to clarify major reasons of a poor harvest, the Porphyra-cultivation ground was investigated in Kwangyang Bay in terms of the laver production per unit area, diseases, and fouling organisms from January to April in 1986. The laver production per unit area of the control station was more than that of the study area at 'Soppal' cultivation ground, while the difference at the cultivation groud using 'nets' seemed to be insignificant. The vertical attachment range of laver was directly associated with the production per unit area at 'Soppal' cultivation ground. The number of young thalli of 1-3 mm length was almost similar between control and study sites at 'nets' cultivation ground. Two kinds of diseases in cultured laver, the crape and shot hole, were prevalent during the study period. However, the affected thalli were gradually decreased at the end of the study period. Major fouling organisms attached to 'Soppal' were Balanus albicostatus, Enteromorpha prolifera, Capsosiphon fulvescens, and Scytosiphon lomentaria. In conclusion, the poor harvest of laver in 1986 may result from such following problems as the decrease in vertical attachment range of laver and fouling problems as the decrease in vertical attachment range of laver and fouling organisms at 'Soppal' cultivation ground, prevalence of certain diseases, changes in environmental conditions, arrangement and maintenance of facilities for laver cultivation.

  • It has been appeared since 1979 that the pattern of laver culture changes from household management to entrepreneurial management. The typical entrepreneurial laver culture management (ELCM) can be defined as a management by the floating aquaculturing method and mechanical processing system. Historical studies show that the ELCM could be operated only under the following condintions; \circled1 securing capital, labor and aquaculturing farm. \circled2 Leveling up of technology to combine these resources effectively. \circled3 Realizing its true value of products for good profits. In turning from household mangement to ELCM, there are some obstacles as follows ; \circled1 Uncertainty, which cannot maintein the merit of mass production because the object of laver culture is living in the sea. \circled2 Immaturity of management owing manly to the lower level of technology and scarcity of competent managers. \circled3 Social problems ; lack of aquaculturing farm, overpopulation in fishing villiage, side-job with agriculture etc. For these reasons, there has been household management with overlabor and underconsumption in fishing village. In order that ELCM can enter the stage of maturity, those problems should be solved. Because ef laver industrial inferiority, these can be solved by the support assistance of government. As the required conditions in ELCM are filled by the government policy, ELCM are increased recently in its numbers.

  • Water temperature data of National. Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) during periods of 19m to 2002 were analyzed to investigate the effect of the water temperature on catches of anchovy and laver in the eastern part of the Southern Waters of Korea The annual catches of anchovy and laver increased gradually although they showed fluctuations each year. Our findings indicated tint the catches cf anchovy and laver were controlled by various oceanographic conditions, mainly water temperature. The appearance of cooler sea surface water, warmer water at 0 to 20 m depth, and bottom water of about $15^{\circ}C$ caused relatively lower catches.

  • Laver aquaculture, which occupies a large proportion in the aquaculture industry in Korea, is still highly dependent on human labor. Therefore, it is necessary to study the development of an automatic system to improve the working environment and increase the efficiency of aquaculture production systems. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the economic feasibility of an improved system in a study for the loading-unloading and automatic weighing systems in laver aquaculture industry. Economic analysis of the developed unloading and automatic weighing system were implemented under various conditions to calculate more accurate benefits and costs. As a result of this study, the economic feasibility was found to be very high in the three models: net present value (NPV), benefit-cost ratio (B/C), internal rate of return (IRR). Moreover, the results of sensitivity analysis showed that the economical efficiency of the automatic loading, unloading, and weighing system in laver aquaculture was very high.

  • This study developed and evaluated a load cell-based automatic weighing system for the automated harvesting of laver (Porphyra tenera) in seaweed aquaculture. The current manual harvesting process was compared with the load cell-based automated system, and quantitative measurements of time, distance, and weight were conducted. The results demonstrated that the load cell-based system reduced the unloading time and increased the throughput compared to the manual method. In addition, statistical analysis confirmed that there was no significant difference from the mean in the weight measurement obtained using the load cell-based system. Based on these findings, the load cell-based automatic weighing system holds potential for efficient production and transactions in laver cultivation, contributing to cost reduction and improving the quality of life for aquaculture workers.

  • Recently, aquaculture farm sites have been increased with demand of the expensive fish species and sea food like as seaweed, laver and oyster. Therefore coastal water quality have been deteriorated by organic contamination from marine aquaculture farm sites. For protecting of coastal environment, we need to control the location of aquaculture sites. The purpose of this study is to detect the laver aquaculture sites using multispectral remotely sensed data with autodetection algorithm. In order to detect the aquaculture sites, density slice and contour and vegetation index methods were applied with SPOT and IKONOS data of Shinan area. The marine aquaculture farm sites were extracted by density slice and contour methods with one band digital number(DN) carrying 65% accuracy. However, vegetation index algorithm carried out 75% accuracy using near-infra red and red bands. Extraction of the laver aquaculture site using remotely sensed data will provide the efficient digital map for coastal water management strategies and red tide GIS management system.
