Development of a Training System for Lathe Operation Using a Simulator with Relationship between Speed of Tool Feed and Cutting Sound/Shape of Chips

  • The recent manufacturing industry in Japan has found it difficult to transfer skills from trained workers to inexperienced workers because the former ages and then retires. This is a particular problem for lathe process, as this operation requires explicit and tacit knowledge, and defining the skills clearly in a manual is difficult. This study aims to develop a training system for lathe operation by using a simulator; this includes formulas that help define the relationship between the speed of tool feed and cutting sound/shape of chips which were proposed in the preceding study. The developed training system is verified the effectiveness.

  • This study was carried out by structural analysis using finite element method for designing high rigidity structure of multi - functional automatic lathe bed. As a result of comparison, it was confirmed that the weight was designed to be higher than the maximum deformation amount. The shape and dimensions of the main pillars and walls of the bed were changed to derive the most suitable design for the multifunction automatic lathe bed. A model of structural design was derived with the goal of minimizing the maximum deformation amount of $20{\mu}m$ or less and the weight of the bed. As a result of applying the derived design improvement proposal to the multifunctional automatic lathe bed, 57.4% weight reduction and maximum principal stress decreased by 45.0% than the initial design model. It is expected that the optimum design that meets these design conditions will reduce the weight of the structure as well as improve the safety of the structure and reduce the machining error in the operation of the machine tool.

  • A stock removal cycle is developed as a programming tool of the CNC lathe. This cycle support the easiness and swifness of a part program generation in the shopfloor. The cycle contains the function of tool path generation of rough/finish cutting, of avoidance air-cut for non-cylindrical (die-casted, forged) workpiece, and of the tool collisopn detection/aviodance. Consequently the intelligent stock removal cycle results in improving the productivity and safety of CNC lathe.

  • The information with regard to the working rance of lathe, cutting tool, cutting condition is managed as detabase system for turning operation. Date with regard to the working range of lathe, cutting tool, cutting condition are stroed by the DBMS(Data Base Management System) and can be added, modified, deleted and retrieved. Data stored in database system are searched to select the most proper cutting tool and cutting condition with the input data fed from the design stage. The system developed in this work is operated by the pull down menu on the IBM PC/AT personal computer, or compatible series.

  • The deep learning image processing technique was used to prevent accidents in lathe work caused by worker negligence. During lathe operation, when the chuck is rotated, it is very dangerous if the operator's hand is near the chuck. However, if the chuck is stopped during operation, it is not dangerous for the operator's hand to be in close proximity to the chuck for workpiece measurement, chip removal or tool change. We used YOLO (You Only Look Once), a deep learning image processing program for object detection and classification. Lathe work images such as hand, chuck rotation and chuck stop are used for learning, object detection and classification. As a result of the experiment, object detection and class classification were performed with a success probability of over 80% at a confidence score 0.5. Thus, we conclude that the artificial intelligence deep learning image processing technique can be effective in preventing incidents resulting from worker negligence in future manufacturing systems.

  • The hob is considered as an effective gear cutting tool for achieving the various gears such as spur gear, helical gear, worm gear and so on. To enhance the productivity and precision of hobs and the competitive ability of domestic CNC hob relieving lathes, a CAM system for CNC hob relieving lathe needs to be realized. In this study, the CAM system is developed based on the personal computer and C language. Besides the automatic generation of CNC data, the developed CAM system has the various capabilities related to the generation of tool path, the cutting simulation for verifying the generated CNC data and forecasting the cutting time, the DNC operation for communicating the CNC data with CNC controller by RS232C port, and the estimation of undercut length for verifying the hob cutting conditions.

  • This paper is related to economic design of tool-resetting period in NC machining. In NC lathe machining, the mean and variance of components dimension fluctuate in slow time and we should reset tool program to compensate the variation from the fluctuation. In this paper. we propose the procedure determining the optimal resetting period based on the total expected operating cost which consists of resetting cost and the quality cost related to dimension variation. As a case study, using experimental data about dimension changes of a lathe machining, we obtain the regression equations of mean and variance of the dimension fluctuation, total expected operating cost, and optimal resetting period.

  • 본 연구에서는 최신형 슬란트베드(slant-bed)타입의 중절삭용 NC선반주축을 대상으로 하여, 구동방식의 변경-기어변속장치를 주축으로부터 완전히 분리시키고 V벨 트에 의해 구동되는 후로팅방식의 새로운 주촉구조를 설계-을 통하여 고속에서의 주축 의 회전성능 향상을 시도하였고, 실험을 통하여 그 회전성능을 전형적인 3개의 서로 다른 재래식 선반주축모델들의 값과 비교 고찰하였다.
