  • In this study, the damage mechanism of large scale steam turbine due to water induction was analyzed and recovery characteristics were reviewed. A turbine consists of the rotating rotor and the stationary casing, and the clearance between them is very small for the efficiency enhancement. If water induction, while relatively cold steam or water is introduced into turbine, occurs, the considerable humping is caused at the casing near the initial water induction point and that induces the rubbing between rotor and casing. Finally, it leads to the catastrophic failure. Bowed rotor has the different characteristics in the recovery depending on damage degree. The elastic deformation due to light rubbing is recovered by turning the rotor with 3 rpm under normal operation condition, but most plastic deformation due to rubbing deforms the local microstructure and that results in permanent deformation which could not be recovered under normal operation condition. Bowed rotor has diverse characteristics depending on the recovery method, and the method is empirical and needs the cutting edge technology. Careful recovery treatment of the rotor will eliminate the risks and secure the high quality rotor similar to new rotor. If any critical error is made during the recovery, the rotor would not be recovered permanently and it should be scrapped.

  • In metal cutting, chatter is an unstable cutting phenomenon which is due to the interaction of the dynamics of the chip removal process and the structural dynamics of machine tool. When chatter occurs, it reduces tool life and results in poor surface roughness and low productivity of the machining process. In this study, the experiments have been conducted to investigate phenomenon of the chatter in CNC lathe without cutting fluid. In the experiments, two accelerometers were attached at the tail stock and tool holder and the signals were caught. In order to observe the effect of chatter on the surface roughness profiles, surface roughness profiles were generated under the ideal condition and the occurrence of the chatter based on the surface simulation model using surface-shaping system. Finally, the result of experiment and simulation have been compared.

  • Surface roughness is widely used as an index for processing degree of accuracy. Recently, regression analysis to predict the machining results are actively used to characterize a cutting operations. In the past, diamond machining had been used for ultra precision cutting operation, but now industrial diamond tools like PCD(Polycrystaline Diamond) has been widely used in ultraprecision machining of nonferrous metals. In this study, the authors focus on the effect of PCD tool property on the surface roughness of different types of aluminum alloy after cutting process by CNC operated lathe. Based on the regression analysis approach on a surface roughness data obtained by experiment, predictive analysis of surface roughness is effective to achieve better surface quality.

  • Experimental results on plastic strain induced in truning operation are presented in this paper. The plastic strain is computed by lagrangian strain using grid method, and metal cutting phenomena are also illustrated by micrograph and distribution figures of plastic strain and microvickers hardness of the machining surface. In the cutting of ductile materials, such as carbon steel, generally, the plastic strain is found to be concentrated near the surface. The amount of plastic strain increases with increasing cutting speed and feed rate. The dustribution of microvickers hardness is greater near the cutting surface and decreases from the machining surface under which its hardness returns to the normal hardness of the material.

  • A contact patch between the wheel and the rail supports the train body and a traction power comes from it when rolling stocks run on the railroad. Friction force between the wheel and rail makes the train move on the rail. Whenever the train runs on the rail, the wheels and rails wear down by frictions inevitably. So it must be shaped by the lathe or changed for the safety train operation and the comfortable ride. Until now, many measures were carried out in order to prevent a wear and tear of the wheels. For example loop line railway in Kun Ja depot and Ji Chuk depot. This document reports the wheel changing data taken by maintenances department for the period before and after 1996 in the 1.2.3.4 lines in Seoul metro.

  • The elimination of chatter vibration is necessary to improve the precision and the productivity of the cutting operation. A new mathematical model of chatter vibration is pressented in order to predict dynamic cutting force from static cutting data. Chatter vibration occurring in the tool structure of lathe is treated theoretically, considering the regenerative effect. The Stability Analysis is carried out by a two degress of freedom system. The dynamic cutting force is analytically expressed by the static cutting coefficient and the dynamic cutting coeccicient which can be determined from the cutting mechanics. The static cutting coefficient controls high speed chatter stability, while the dynamic cutting coefficient dominates low chatter stability. From above considerations, the cirtical width of cut which governs chatter stability was obtained.

  • This paper shows that the identified and unidentified components of surface roughness in NC turning lathe which can not be analyzed in time domain such as $R_{max},\;R_a$ can be isolated in frequency domain by FFT analyzer. By interfacing FFT analyzer with stylus surface roughness instrument, surface roughness on change of working condition, especially tool feed, such as 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3(mm/rev) can be analyzed in frequency domain as follows. 1. By frequency analysis of surface roughness profile, the basic wave length of surface roughness can be obtained to isolate the identified and unidentified components of surface roughness. 2. With increase of tool feed, the unidentified components of surface roughness increase. 3. Since $R_{max}$, which can be obtained by stylus surface roughness is proportion to the output voltage of FFT analyzer, FFT analyzer also can be used to measure surface roughness in time domain such $R_a,\;R_{max}$.

  • The purpose of this study is to interpretate the tools and the method of making wooden artifacts by analyzing the trace of tools on the surface of wooden artifacts estimated to be from the 2nd to the 4th century. As a result of analyzing the trace of tools on the surface of 97 items of wood artifacts, it was confirmed that various tools such as rhizome, chisel, claw, hand knife and ax were used to make these artifacts. Particularly, the marks of the turning knife and the turning lathe were confirmed, and it was found that the method of turning operation was used at this time. In addition, it was confirmed that both the Nunjil (tangential process) and the Seonjil (longitudinal process) were used to produce the wooden container artifacts by turning operation. It observes that proper processing method operation was applied to manufacture wooden container artifact depending on its form and intended use.
