In this work, microstructural and hardness evolution of the X20 steel upon short-term creep test ($550^{\circ}C$ to $650^{\circ}C$, $180^{\circ}C$ to 60 MPa) was studied by using scanning electron microscope, electron backscattered diffraction, and transmission electron microscope, microhardness tester. After creep rupture, gauge and grip part of the specimens were microstructurally analyzed. Creep at the $650^{\circ}C$/60 MPa resulted in a rupture at 1,460 hours with growth of lath width from 1.31 to $2.87{\mu}m$ and a grain growth with a more equiaxed feature. There is a close relationship between Microhardness and lath width. The formation and coarsening of Laves phase, which was observed up to $600^{\circ}C$ of creep temperature, was accelerated by the applied stress. Slight coarsening of the $M_{23}C_6$ was observed in the $550^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ crept or aged specimens. The coarsening of $M_{23}C_6$ depended on the temperature, where specimens crept at $650^{\circ}C$ showed higher growth rate. The microstructural evolution of X20 after short-term creep test was extensively discussed in relation to the long-term creep/aging test reported in literatures.
In order to investigate the effects of tempering temperature and heat-treatment path on the microstructural and mechanical properties of ASTM Gr.92 steels, four samples with different tempering temperatures and heat-treatment paths wer prepared. THeree experimental steels showed tempered martensitic microstructures, but the sample tempered at $810^{\circ}C$ was presumed to retain partially untempered martensitic microstructures due to a lower ${\alpha}$+${\gamma}$ phase regime. $M_{23}C_6$, V(C,N), and Nb(C,N) precipitates were observed in all samples. In addition $Cr_2N$ was observed to be precipitated finely and uniformly by isothermal heat-treatment. The lath width and precipitate size in the isothermal heat-treated samples were much smaller than those of the tempered-only specimens. Because of a fine and uniform precipitate, a reduction of lath width would enhance precipitation hardeing, and it was shown that mechanical propertiesincluding the hardness and tensile properties of the steels were improved by isothermal heat-treatment.
It was evaluated that the microstructural and mechanical properties of Ta-bearing 9Cr-0.5Mo-2W ferritic/martensitic experimental steels. All the experimental steels showed the tempered martensitic microstructures, and $M_{23}C_6$ carbides, whose sizes were ranged from 200 to 300 nm, were easily observed at both boundaries of the prior austenite grain and the martensite lath. In addition, a relatively large Nb-rich MX carbonitrides were intermittently detected at the prior austenite grain boundaries, whereas a lot of Vrich MX carbonitrides, whose mean diameter was less than 50 nm, were observed randomly at both boundaries. Ta was mainly incorporated into the V-rich MX carbonitrides rather than the Nb-rich ones and their content was spanned from 5 to 20 at.%. Ta contents within the MX precipitates also increased as the content of Ta increased. Because the Ta addition into the steels would be attributed to the precipitation strengthening, solid solution strengthening and lath width reduction, it was shown that the mechanical properties, including hardness, tensile strength and creep rate of the 9%Cr-0.5Mo-2W steels were improved by the increase of Ta content. Especially, 9Cr-0.5Mo-2W-0.3V-0.05Nb-0.14Ta steel was revealed to be relatively excellent in the application for the SFR fuel cladding.
Microstructural development of ferritic 11Cr-3.45W heat-resistance steel for ultra-supercritical power plant during creep and thermal aging was investigated using electron microscopy. The test samples were isothermally aged at $700^{\circ}C$ for up to 4000 hours and subjected to creep loading at $700^{\circ}C$ for predetermined periods of lifetime to prepare the damaged materials. In this structural material, a various secondary phases are the primary influence on mechanical properties of ferritic heat-resistance steel. The typical precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$, MX and $M_2X$ secondary phases had been analyzed through qualitative and quantitative manner. Coarsening of precipitates and increase of lath width were observed during creep and thermal aging. This phenomenon was remarkable for creep process compared with isothermal aging process.
Two types of secondary hardening martensitic steels, 10Co-14Ni and 6Co-5Ni, were produced by vacuum induction melting to investigate the effect of ausforming process on mechanical properties. According to the results of present study, the alloy samples ausformed at low temperature indicated a rather low hardness level in overall aging time despite the refinement of martensite lath width. As the result can closely be related with the presence of primary carbides precipitated within the initial austenite matrix, we confirmed that, in ultrahigh strength secondary hardening martensitic alloy steels, the ausforming process can rather limit the degree of secondary hardening during the subsequent aging treatment.
In this study, effect of laser power on hardness and microstructure of SKD61 Hot Die steel of which surface was melted and hardened with Yb:YAG disk laser was investigated. Beam speed was fixed at 70 mm/sec and distance between them was 0.8 mm about Laser surface melting. The only thing that was changed laser power. Laser powers were 2.0, 2.4 and 2.8 kW. No defect was found under all conditions. As the laser power increased, the penetration depth were deepened and the bead width was also widened. There was no hardness deviation of fusion zone at same laser power and it was higher than that of heat affected zone. In addition, the more laser power increased, the more hardness in fusion zone decreased. Fusion zone was macroscopically dendrite structure. However, core matric in dendrite was lath martensite of 100 nm size. There were $M_{23}C_6$ of 500 nm and the VC and $Mo_2C$ of a nano meters on boundary of dendrite.
The TRIP behavior in tensile deformation of retained austenite formed by reverse transformation treatment in 0.15%C-6%Mn-(Ti, Nb) steels has been investigated. The shape of retained austenite was almost a fine lath type with $0.1{\sim}0.3{\mu}m$ width and the two distinctly different transformation sequences of retained austenite, i) retained austenite${\rightarrow}$martensite and ii) retained austenite${\rightarrow}$deformation twin${\rightarrow}$martensite were revealed. The strength-elongation combination was increased with increasing the holdig time at low temperatures ($625^{\circ}C$) but decreased abruptly with increasing holding time at high temperatures ($675^{\circ}C$), owing to the lowering of ductility. The strength-elongation combination and TRIP effect was lower in tensile deformation in the range of $100{\sim}250^{\circ}C$ than room temperature. The tensile strengh and elongation of a reverse transformed steels with addition of Ti or Nb was 93kg/, 40% respectively, which is higher over 10% of strength without ductility loss than in 0.15%C-6%Mn steels.
In this paper the effect of interstitial heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties was examined both in the 0.15C-6Mn steels and 0.15C-6Mn steels added with Nb or Ti. This result will be applied into the development of a steel which has the properties of high strength and high ductility resulted from the transformation induced plasticity. The strength-elongation combination was increased as the holding time was increased when the temperature is at $625^{\circ}C$. However, the strength-elongation combination was decreased sharply as the holding time was increased when the temperature is at $675^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength and elongation of a reverse transformed steels added with Ti or Nb was 93 kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 40%, respectively. This steel shows higher strength more than 10% of the 0.15C-6Mn steel without loss of ductility. The autenite formed from the reverse transformed treatment has a fine lath type, which has the width size of 0.1-0.3 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The TRIP sequence normally transforms the austenite to martensite, however, some of the sequence will produce retained austenite \longrightarrow deformation twin \longrightarrow martensite
Die steel for plastic molding were used as mold material of automobile parts and electronic component industry. The material of this paper has superior to mechanical properties, such as repair weldability, corrosion resistance and high temperature strength, required mold parts for semitransparent. Laser-induced surface hardening technology is widely adopted to improver fatigue life and wear resistance via localized hardening at the surface of mold parts. The objective of this research work is to investigate on the characteristics of surface hardening of the laser process parameters, such as beam travel speed, laser power and defocsued spot position, for the case of die steel for plastic molding. Lens for surface hardening of large area is plano-convex type with elliptical profile to maintain uniform laser irradiation. According to the experimental results, large size of hardened layer at the surface of die steel for plastic molding was achieved, and microstructure of this layer was lath martensite. Optimal surface status and mechanical property of hardened layer could be obtained at 1095Watt, $0.25{\sim}0.3m/min$, 0mm (focal length: 232mm) for laser power, beam travel speed, and focal position. Where, heat input was $0.793{\times}10^{3}J/cm^2$, and width of hardened layer was 27.58mm.
