  • The cohesive non-swelling soil (CNS) cushion technology has been widely applied in the subgrade and slope improvement at expansive soil regions. However, the mechanism of the inhibition effect of the CNS layer on expansive soil (ES) has not been fully understood. We performed four outdoor model tests to further understand the inhibition effect, including different kinds of upper layer and thickness, under the unidirectional seepage condition. The swelling deformation, soil pressure, and electrical resistivity were constantly monitored during the saturation process. It is found that when a CNS layer covered the ES layer, the swelling deformation and electrical resistivity of the ES layer decreased significantly, especially the upper part. The inhibition effect of the CNS layer increases with the increase of CNS thickness. The distribution of vertical and lateral soil pressure also changed with the covering of a CNS layer. The electrical resistivity can be an effective index to describe the swelling deformation of ES layer and analyze the inhibition effect of the CNS layer. Overall, the CNS deadweight and the ion migration are the major factors that inhibit the swelling deformation of expansive soil.

  • Important parameters for the stability checks of cantilever wall are the active earth pressure and the weight of soil above the heel of the base slab. If the heel length is so long enough that the shear zone bounded by the failure plane is not obstructed by the stem of the wall, the Rankine active condition is assumed to exist along the vertical plane which is located at the edge of the heel of the base slab. Then the Rankine active earth pressure equations may be theoretically used to calculate the lateral pressure on the vertical plane. However, in case of the cantilever wall with a short heel, the application of Rankine theory is not only theoretically incorrect but also makes the lateral earth pressure larger than the actual pressure and results in uneconomical design. In this study, for the cantilever wall with a short heel the limit analysis method is used to investigate the mechanism of development of the active earth pressure and then the magnitude and location of the resultants of the pressure and the weight of the soil above the heel are determined. The calculated results are compared with the existing methods for the stability check. In case of the cantilever wall with a short heel, the results by the Mohr circle method and Teng's method show max. 3.7% and 32% larger than those of the limit analysis method respectively.

  • The earth pressure coefficient at rest for clayey soils in the one-dimensional state, $K_0$ obtained from the triaxial test is not correct in principle because the seepage flow is radial and the displacement of soil elements is three-dimensional. Measurements of the earth pressure and the pore water pressure during one-dimension consolidation in the consolidometer ring are presented. The earth pressure and pore water pressure are measured directly by a circular part of the consolidometer ring of a floating type at its mid height. A plastic clay showed $K_0$=0.5 irrespective of pressure in the consolidometer ring.

  • The settlement hardly occurs in structures supported by pile foundation such as abutment, culvert but a cavity is formed in the lower part of a structure. As a result, soil discharged from the lateral ground to the cavity accelerates the settlement of the lateral ground of the structure, resulting in a larger settlement. Therefore, in order to prevent problems caused by cavity under the structure supported by pile foundation, soil Flow Protector (briefly called 'FLP'), which can be easily installed on the side of structure, was developed. In this study, an laboratory model test was carried out to prove the reduction effect of settlement and to estimate the optimal installation length of the FLP. As a result, the installation of the FLP reduced the settlement of the lateral ground and prevented the leakage of lateral ground soil into the cavity. If the stiffness of the FLP is small, the state or active earth pressure is generated in the upper part, which is not favorable for stability. But if the stiffness of the FLP is high enough, the passive earth pressure area is generated in the upper part, which will be advantageous for the stability. Also, the increased installation length of FLP is effective to reduce the settlement. And the ratio of the optimal length of the FLP to the box structure height (H = 250 mm) are flexible FLP 1.38, stiff FLP 0.73.

  • A series of three-dimensional numerical modelling have been conducted to clarify the behaviour of multi-pressurised soil nails with high strength steel pipes. In this study, the soil non-linearity, the soil-nail interaction and staged construction are considered. It has been found that pressurised soil nails can reduce lateral ground movement by 14-21% compared to general soil nails with very low pressure. In addition, ground settlement was reduced when using multi-pressurised soil nails. The pressurised soil nail may result in an increase in the surcharge loading on the ground surface.

  • In this study, CPT-based methodology for estimating the ultimate lateral resistance, $p_u$, is proposed and verified for lateral loaded piles in sandy soil. Preexistent methods estimating the ultimate lateral resistance, $p_u$, and the ultimate lateral capacity, $H_u$, of pile have been based on the vertical effective stress, relative density, and the coefficient of lateral earth pressure. Similarly, cone resistance $q_c$ in pure sandy soil is expressed by those essential factors. As correlation between $p_u$ and $q_c$ are normalized with average effective stress ${\sigma}_m$, estimation methodology for the lateral loaded pile of $p_u$ in sandy soil is proposed. The method is verified by calibration chamber test results in pure sand. The standard derivation of estimated $p_u$ is 0.279, and COV (Coefficient Of Variation) of estimated $p_u$ is 0.272. These results showed that the estimated pus by the method are analogous with the measured $p_us$ in calibration chamber test.

  • The relieving platform has the advantage of decreasing the total lateral earth pressure on the retaining wall and increasing the overall stability of the structure. Several modeling tests were performed to determine the earth pressure distribution on the retaining wall with a relieving platform and to compare it with that of the cantilever retaining wall. Different types of soil and angle of cutting surface were used to determine the effect of the soil characteristics and the backfill conditions on these earth pressure distributions. From the modeling tests, comparisons between the retaining wall with a relieving platform and the cantilever retaining wall show that the reduction of the lateral earth pressure and deformation of wall was indicated clearly on the retaining wall with a relieving platform. And the overall stability was increased by the relieving platform.

  • The coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest in loose sand during virgin loading, K0 , and during unloading, K'0 , have been determined from laterally confined load-unload tests. The tests included measurement of lateral pressure with null pressure gauges, side wall friction with newly designed friction meters and applied pressure and base pressure with load cells. The importance of accounting for side-wall friction when evaluating the distribution of vertical pressure over the height of the soil specimen was demonstrated. Relatively uniform friction was observed during loading, but this was not the case during unloading unless friction reduction measures were employed. While the measured value of K0 was found to be close to, if slightly higher than the value commonly estimated on the basis of friction angle, φ', the ratio of K'0 to K0 was found to reasonably fit an expression of the form K'0/K0 = 1 + C·log(OCR), with C equal to 1 in the present tests.

  • To investigate the soil-pile interactive performance under lateral loads, a set of laboratory model tests was conducted on remoulded test bed of soft clay and medium dense sand. Then, a simplified boundary element analysis had been carried out assuming floating pile. In case of soft clay, it has been observed that lateral loads on piles can initiate the formation of a gap, soil heave and the tension crack in the vicinity of the soil surface and the interface, whereas in medium dense sand, a semi-elliptical depression zone can develop. Comparison of test and boundary element results indicates the accuracy of the solution developed. However, in the boundary element analysis, the possible shear stresses likely to be developed at the interface are ignored in order to simplify the existing complex equations. Moreover, it is unable to capture the influence of base restraint in case of a socketed pile. To bridge up this gap and to study the influence of the initial stress state and interface parameters, a field based case-study of laterally-loaded pile in layered soil with socketed tip is explored and modelled using the finite element method. The results of the model have been verified against known field measurements from a case-study. Parametric studies have been conducted to investigate the influence of the coefficient of lateral earth pressure and the interface strength reduction factor on the results of the model.

  • It is very urgent to research the proper recycling method of marine dredged soil as construction material for environmental conservation. Couple of developed countries have been lots of related researches on recycling of marine dredged soil for marine environmental conservation. This is highly imperative in our country. A small-scaled model test for underground pipe has been conducted on the use of controlled low strength materials with marine dredged soil. The flexible pipe, which is called PVC, was used. Four different testing materials, such as natural sand, insitu-soil, sand-CLSM with marine dredged soil and insitu-soil CLSM with marine dredged soil, were used. The vertical and lateral displacement of pipe with CLSM is one tenth of common granular materials. Also, the use of CSLM showed lower lateral and vertical pressure than that of common granular materials. The main reason is the effect of cement hardening of CLSM. This could increase of the stiffness of pipe with backfill materials. In this study, the data presented show that marine dredged soil and in-situ soil can be successfully used in CLSM and reduce the deformation and earth pressure on flexible pipe.
