  • In this paper, reinforced concrete columns test has been conducted under repeated lateral load reversals. The test columns have been reinforced with outside lateral confinement members in addition to transverse reinforcements. For this purpose, a strainless steel and a GFRP have been employed for the lateral confinement members. Primary parameters are types, thickness and spacing of the lateral confinement members. Experimental results reveal that columns reinforced with lateral confinement members exhibit improved ductility and energy dissipation capacity in comparison with those unreinforced. It is thus concluded that the present approach can be of a useful scheme for the seismic retrofitting of reinforced concrete columns.

  • The objective of this study is to understand the variables affected the confinement for the transverse reinforcement of the reinforced concrete structural walls with the T-shaped cross section subjected to cyclic lateral loads. The structural performance of T-shaped walls was advanced by the transverse reinforcement which restrained the concrete subjected to compressive stress. If the arrangement of transverse reinforcement was not suitable for the confinement, T-shaped walls happened the brittle failure by web crushing or bucking of vertical reinforcement at the compression zone. It is necessary to confine transverse reinforcement in order to prevent the these failure. But the location of neutral axis and the magnitude of ultimate strain vary according to the section shape, a ratio of axial load, a ratio of wall cross sectional area to the floor-plan area, an aspect ratio and the reinforcement ratio. Therefore, the objective of this research is to grasp the location of neutral axis and the range which needs for the confinement of transverse reinforcement through the results of the sectional analysis which varies the ratio of axial load and the ratio of vertical reinforcement.

  • Longitudinal reinforcements of the plastic hinge region were behaved tensile deformation and compressional deformation by direction of lateral loading. However Confinement steels were behaved only tensile deformation by lateral loading. Transverse steels were laid the state of tension in the lateral loading of time, and they were laid state that stress is zero when it was removed lateral load. Nine specimens were tested under cyclic stresses(tension and zero). The purpose of this research is to investigate the strain behavior and capacity of energy for confinement steel. The selected test variables are $L/d_b(L/d_b=6)$, size of reinforcement and specified yielding strength(300, 400, 500 MPa).

  • Structural performance of the walls subjected to lateral load reversals depends on various parameters such as loading history, sectional shape, reinforcement, lateral confinement, aspect ratio, axial compression, etc. Thus, the performance of the shearwall for wall-type apartment should be evaluated properly considering above parameters. This study investigates the effect of sectional shape on the structural performance of the wall. Sectional shape of the specimen is rectangular, barbell and T. Based on this experimental results, all specimens behaved as ductile fashion and failed by concrete crushing of the compression zone. Deformation index of those specimens evaluated better than 3 of ductility ratio, and 1.5% of deformability specified by seismic provision. Moreover, the performance of the rectangular shaped specimen, whose compression zone was confined with U-bar and cross tie, was as good as the barbell shaped specimen. Therefore, if we considered construction practice such as workmanship and detailing, shearwall with rectangular section may be more economical lateral load resisting system.

  • Experimental research was conducted to investigate structural performance of concrete columns confined with welded reinforcement grids were tested under simulated seismic loading. The columns were subjected to constant axial compression accompanied by incrementally increasing lateral deformation reversals. The results indicate thar welded reinforcement grid can be used effectively as confinement reinforcement provided that the steel used, have sufficient ductility and the welding process employed does not alter the strength and elongation characteristics of steel. The grids improved the structural performance of columns, which developed lateral drift ratios in excess of 3% with the spacing and volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement similar to those required by the ACI 318-95 Building Code.

  • Confined transverse reinforcement was arranged in a plastic hinge region to resist the lateral load that increased the lateral confinement effect in the bridge substructure. Columns increased the seismic performance through securing stiffness and ductility. The calculation method of transverse reinforcements at plastic hinges is reported in the AASHTO-LRFD specification. This specification was only proposed for solid reinforced concrete (RC) columns. Therefore, if this specification is applied for another column as composite column besides the solid RC column, the column cannot be properly evaluated. The application of this specification is particularly limited for composite hollow RC columns. The composite hollow RC column consists of transverse, longitudinal reinforcements, cover concrete, core concrete, and an inner tube inserted in the hollow face. It increases the ductility, strength, and stiffness in composite hollow RC columns. This paper proposes a modified equation for economics and rational design through investigation of displacement ductility when applying the existing specifications at the composite hollow RC column. Moreover, a parametric study was performed to evaluate the detailed behavior. Using these results, a calculation method of economic transverse reinforcements is proposed.

  • The basic concept of seismic design is to attain the ductility required in a design earthquake. This ductility can be obtained by providing sufficient lateral confinements to the plastic hinge regions of columns. The most cost-effective design might be derived by determining the proper amount of lateral confinement using a stress-strain relationship for confined concrete. Korean bridge design code requires the same amount of lateral confinement regardless of target ductility, but Japanese design code provides the stress-strain relationship of the confined concrete to determine the amount of lateral confinement accordingly. While design based on material characteristics tends to make the design process more involved, it makes it possible to achieve cost-effectiveness, which is also compatible with the concept of performance-based design. In this study, specimens with different numbers of lateral confinements have been tested to investigate the characteristics of the stress-strain relationship. Test results were evaluated, using several empirical equations to quantify the effects.

  • Improved seismic performances of RC bridges can be attained by sufficient ductilities of piers, which can be obtained by providing sufficient lateral confinements to the plastic hinge regions of piers. The cross sectional shape and the amount of lateral reinforcements are key parameters in the determination of effective confinements. Even though identical amounts of lateral reinforcement are provided, the effective confinement differs due to different spacing, arrangements, hook details and so on. Unlike circular sections in which confinement is exerted by mere hoop reinforcements, cross-ties are arranged in square or rectangular sections to enhance the effective confinements. The stress-strain relationship of confined concrete is varied by how to consider these cross-ties. In this study, the stress-strain relationships of confined concrete with cross-ties are investigated experimentally and their mechanical characteristics are estimated by comparison with other empirical equations.

  • This paper are the mechanical characteristics of eccentrically loaded normal strength and high strength reinforced concrete columns based on the test results. The columns are $120\times120$mmat the mid-section and are haunched at the ends to apply the eccentric loading and prevent premature failure. Variables are concrete strengths(361, 672, 974 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$), $\textrm{cm}^2$longitudinal reinforcement ratios (1.98, 3.54, 1 5.53%), spacing of lateral reinforcement (30, 60, 120mm), and eccentricities (24, 40mm). As a results, the main conclusions obtained from the comparison and analysis for the strength tendency, deformation and ductility of high strength reinforced concrete columns with variables are as follows; As the concrete compressive strength concrete and lateral reinforcement increases, the ductility index of high strength reinforced concrete columns decrease, but it increase with the increase of eccentricity and longitudinal reinforcement ratio. The confinement ratio must be greater than 20 percent in order for the level of ductility between high strength reinforced concrete columns and normal strength reinforced concrete columns to be almost equal.
