This paper aims to reexamine Homorganic Cluster Lengthening in Late Old English whereby OE short vowels became lengthened before specific consonant clusters such as /-ld, -nd, -mb, -rd, -rð, -ng, -rz/. As for the motivation for this apparently odd-looking sound change, I propose that it was the result of phonologization of the phonetic lengthening of syllables containing resonants homorganic with a following voiced obstruent. Adopting Luick's (1898) view of "resonant+voiced homorganic obstruent" phonologically as a single coda, I show that Homorganic Cluster Lengthening is in fact a natural sound change that can be explained with the proper postulation of a few quantity-related universal constraints within the framework of the Optimality Theory. The fact that the constraints and their ranking as posited in this paper can also account for Pre-Cluster Shortening points to the validity of my approach in the analysis of other quantity changes in Middle English.

The essay attempts at a critical reading of Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) in terms of character and socio-cultural change. Juxtaposing the story of Michael Henchard's career with the social and economic changes in the agricultural town, it attempts to elaborate on the complex ways in which Hardy relates the old modes of life and thinking to the material culture. Though the novel is centered on the story of Henchard, the Henchard-Farfrae clash represents the conflict of "old" and "new" modes of socio-economic organization and consciousness. The story of the rustic man of character struggling with his contradictory traits of strong will-power and emotional collapse suggests that Hardy's literary representation of the rural community and the rustic protagonist is deeply rooted in historical reality. However, while there is the interlocking of the changes in personal fate and social change, the representation is a "reinvented" literary construction with complex mediation. Despite the narrator's emphasis on Henchard's immutability, peculiarity, and resilience, his character is, in a complex, mediated way, shaped by the material conditions of English rural community in the late 19th century. The mediating role of Elizabeth-Jane as a narrative resolution embodies Hardy's ambivalent historical position concerning the period undergoing change and conflict.

Sherman Alexie deals with reservation realism in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven and Smoke Signals. By reservation realism he means American Indian traditions and its problems like alcoholism, violence, unemployment, depression, and poverty on the reservation. It cannot be denied that the traditional ceremonies have played significant roles in making it possible for American Indians to keep their own ethnic identities. It is, however, also true that the same traditions have prevented them from embracing modernity. Alexie believes that it is high time that Indians living on the reservation discarded the old tradition of racial exclusiveness for a gradual crossing of cultural borders. What is seriously needed on today's reservation is not the historic figure of Crazy Horse, a stoic and masculine warrior in the late 19th century, but Sacagawea, a Shoshoni Indian who helped Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the American West in the early 19th century. When asked to be more specific about cross cultural examples, Alexie proposes successful Indian doctors and lawyers as role models on the reservation.
