Detection of halogens using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in open air is very difficult since their strong atomic emission lines are located in VUV region. In NIR region, there are other emission lines of halogens through electronic transitions between excited states. However, these lines undergo Stark broadening severely. We report the observation of the emission lines of halogens in laser-induced plasma (LIP) spectra in NIR region using a helium gas flow. Particularly, the emission lines of iodine at 804.374 and 905.833 nm from LIPs have been observed for the first time. In the helium ambient gas, Stark broadening of the emission lines and background continuum emission could be suppressed significantly. Variations of the line intensity, plasma temperature, and electron density with the helium flow rate was investigated. Detection of chlorine and bromine in flame retardant of rubbers was demonstrated using this method. Finally, we suggest a pulsed helium gas jet as a practical and ecomonical helium gas source for the LIBS analysis of halogens in open air.

In this paper, with the aid of information which is included within data, preprocessing algorithm-based black plastic classifier is designed. The slope and area of spectrum obtained by using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) are analyzed for each material and its ensuing information is applied as the input data of the proposed classifier. The slope is represented by the rate of change of wavelength and intensity. Also, the area is calculated by the wavelength of the spectrum peak where the material property of chemical elements such as carbon and hydrogen appears. Using informations such as slope and area, input data of the proposed classifier is constructed. In the preprocessing part of the classifier, Principal Component Analysis(PCA) and fuzzy transform are used for dimensional reduction from high dimensional input variables to low dimensional input variables. Characteristic analysis of the materials as well as the processing speed of the classifier is improved. In the condition part, FCM clustering is applied and linear function is used as connection weight in the conclusion part. By means of Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO), parameters such as the number of clusters, fuzzification coefficient and the number of input variables are optimized. To demonstrate the superiority of classification performance, classification rate is compared by using WEKA 3.8 data mining software which contains various classifiers such as Naivebayes, SVM and Multilayer perceptron.

To improve the efficiency and lifetime of filters, we analyze the element distribution at the entrance and exit by using the flow inside a filter, confirming that the internal structure affects the filter efficiency. The flow in the pipe is predicted through computer simulations, and the filtration efficiency of each element is compared through experiments. The efficiency and lifetime of the filter are indirectly improved through the element distribution at the filter outlet according to the internal structure. Because pressure loss from the structure inevitably occurs, the efficiency and lifetime of filters against pressure loss must be considered.

In this work, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is used to investigate soil samples collected from different desert areas of Riyadh city in Saudi Arabia. Both qualitative analysis and plasma parameters are studied via the observed LIBS spectra. These experiments have been done using a Spectrolaser-7000 system with 50 mJ fundamental wavelength of Nd:YAG laser and detection delay time of 1 microsecond. Many spectral lines are highly resolved for many elements like Al, Fe, Mg, Si, Mn, Na, Ca and K. The electron temperatures Te and electron densities Ne, for the constituent of generated LIBS plasma, are determined for all the collected samples. It is found that both Te and Ne vary from one desert area to other. This variation is due to the change of the elemental concentration in different desert areas that affects the sample's matrices. Time dependent measurements have also been performed on the soil samples. While the signal-to-base ratio (SBR) reached its optimal value at 1 microsecond, the plasma parameters Ne and Te reach values of $4{\times}10^{17}cm^{-3}$ and 9235 K, respectively, at 2.5 microsecond. The later indicate that the plasma cooling processes are slow in comparison to the previously observed results for metallic samples. The observed results show also that in the future it is possible to enhance the exploitation of LIBS in the remote on-line environmental monitoring application, by following up only the values of Ne and Te for one element of the soil desert sample using an optical fiber probe.
To implement carbon-neutrality in transportation sectors until 2050, hydrogen is considered a promising fuel for internal combustion engines because hydrogen does not contain carbon itself. Although hydrogen does not emit CO2 emission from its combustion process, the low energy density in a volume unit hinders the adoption of hydrogen. Therefore, the understanding of hydrogen jet behavior and measurement of equivalence ratio must be conducted to completely implement the high-pressure hydrogen direct injection. The main objective of this research is feasibility test of hydrogen local equivalence ratio measurement by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBs). To visualize the macroscopic structure of hydrogen jet, high-speed schlieren imaging was conducted. Moreover, LIBs has been adopted to validate the feasibility of hydrogen local equivalence ratio measurement. The hydrogen injection pressure was varied from 4 MPa to 8 MPa and injected in a constant volume chamber where the ambient pressure was 0.5 MPa. The increased injection pressure extends the vertical penetration of hydrogen jet. Due to the higher momentum supply when the injection pressure is high, the hydrogen has easily diffused in all directions. As the laser trigger timing has delayed, the low hydrogen atomic emission was detected due to the longer mixture formation time. Based on equivalence ratio measurement results, LIBs could be applied as a methodology for hydrogen local equivalence ratio measurement.

Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process (ACP) is a pyrochemical process in which the spent fuel of PWR is transformed into the uranic metal ingot. Through this process, which has been developed in KAERI since 1998, the radioactivity, the radiotoxicity, the heat and the volume of the PWR spent fuel are reduced by a quarter of the original. To demonstrate a lab-scale process and extract the data for the later pilot-scale process, a demonstration facility of ACP (ACPF) is under construction and the lab-scale demonstration is slated for 2006. To establish the safeguardability of ACPF, a safeguards system including a neutron counter based on non-destructive assay, which is named as ACP Safeguards Neutron Counter (ASNC), the ACP Safeguards Surveillance System (ASSS) which consists of two neutron monitors and five IAEA cameras, and Laser Induced Breakdown System (LIBS) have been developed and are ready to be installed at ACPF. The target materials of ACP to assay with ASNC are categorized into three types among which the first is the uranic metal ingot, the second is the salt waste and the last is $UO_2$ and $U_{3}O_8$ powders, rod cuts and hulls. The Pu content of process nuclear materials can be accounted with ASNC. The ASSS is integrated in the ACP Intelligent Surveillance Software (AISS) in which the IAEA camera images and background signals at the rear doors of ACPF are displayed. The composition of special nuclear materials of ACP can be measured with LIBS which can be a supporting measurement tool for ASNC. The conceptual picture of safeguards system of ACPF is shown in Fig. 1.

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has developed a safeguards technology for pyroprocessing based on the Safeguards-By-Design (SBD) concept. KAERI took part in a Member-State Support Program (MSSP) to establish a pyroprocessing safeguards approach. A Reference Engineering-scale Pyroprocessing Facility (REPF) concept was designed on which KAERI developed its safeguards system. Recently the REPF is being upgraded to the REPF+, a scaled-up facility. For assessment of the nuclear-material accountancy (NMA) system, KAERI has developed a simulation program named Pyroprocessing Material Flow and MUF Uncertainty Simulation (PYMUS). The PYMUS is currently being upgraded to include a Near-Real-Time Accountancy (NRTA) statistical analysis function. The Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process Safeguards Neutron Counter (ASNC) has been updated as Non-Destructive Assay (NDA) equipment for input-material accountancy, and a Hybrid Induced-fission-based Pu-Accounting Instrument (HIPAI) has been developed for the NMA of uranium/transuranic (U/TRU) ingots. Currently, performance testing of Compton-suppressed Gamma-ray measurement, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), and homogenization sampling are underway. These efforts will provide an essential basis for the realization of an advanced nuclear-fuel cycle in the ROK.

It is laser induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) that enables qualitative and quantitative analysis of the elements contained in unknown specimen by comparing the wavelength characteristics of each element obtained from the spectral analysis of the standard specimen with the wavelength analysis results from unknown specimens. In this study, the applicability of LIBS to the analysis of major deterioration factors affecting concrete durability was experimentally analyzed. That is, the possibility of applying LIBS to the diagnosis of concrete deterioration by studying the quantitative detection of harmful deteriorating factors on chloride, sulfate and carbonated mortar specimens using LIBS was studied. As a result of LIBS test for each chloride and sulfate specimen, the LIBS spectral wavelength intensity of chlorine and sulfur ions increased linearly with increasing concentration. Carbon ion LIBS spectral wave intensities of carbonated specimens increased nonlinearly over the duration of carbonation exposure. From the above results, it can be partially confirmed that LIBS can be applied to the diagnosis of concrete deterioration. In case of concrete carbonation, it is presumed that carbon content is contained in the cement itself and is different from the detection of chloride and sulfate specimen. Therefore, it is considered that more various parameter studies should be performed to apply LIBS to concrete carbonation.
