  • The adaptive optics for compensating for optical wavefront distortion due to atmospheric turbulence has recently been used in systems that improve beam quality by eliminating the aberrations of high power laser beam wavefront. However, unseen-mode, which can not be measured in the wavefront sensor, increases the instability of the laser beam wavefront compensator on the adaptive optics system. As a method for improving such instability, a mathematical method for limiting the number of singular values is used when generating the command matrix involved in generation of the drive command of the wavefront compensator. In the past, however, we have relied solely on experimental methods to determine the limiting range of the singular values. In this paper, we propose a criterion for determining the limiting range of the singular values using the driving characteristics and the correlation technique of the wavefront compensator's actuators and have proved its performance experimentally.

  • A phase retrieval method using an error reduction algorithm is developed for reconstructing a wavefront aberration of an 100-TW Ti:sapphire laser pulse from the measurement of a focal spot. The phase retrieval method can successfully reconstruct a wavefront aberration of a 100-TW Ti:sapphire laser pulse, and the reconstructed wavefront aberration shows a good agreement with the wavefront aberration measured with a wavefront sensor. The effect of the dynamic range and the intensity noise on the reconstruction is also investigated in reconstructing a wavefront aberration of an 100-TW Ti:sapphire laser pulse.

  • An Nd:YAG slab structure was designed for a high-power zigzag slab laser amplifier based on computational simulation of the wavefront distortion. For the simulation, the temperature distribution in the slab was calculated at first by thermal analysis. Then, the optical path length (OPL) was obtained by a ray tracing method for the corresponding refractive index variation inside the slab. After that, the OPL distribution of the double-pass amplified beam was calculated by summing the results obtained for the first and second passes. The amount of wavefront distortion was finally obtained as the peak-to-valley value of the OPL distribution. As a result of this study, the length and position of the gain medium were optimized by minimizing the transverse wavefront distortion. Under the optimized conditions, the transverse wavefront distortion of the double-pass amplified beam was less than $0.2{\mu}m$ for pump power of 14 kW.

  • The automatic analysis of the wavefront of laser beam is simulated numerically, and is applied to get the wavefront of the output beam of LD-pumped cw Nd:YAG laser, experimentally. The automatic analysis tool was developed by utilizing Fourier analysis method, and its usefulness is proved through numerical simulation. The wavefront error due to the analysis tool is known to be less than A/30. In order to find the wavefront of Nd:YAG laser beam, its interference fringe is obtained from Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The wavefront calculated from the developed tool has the shape of nearly spherical wavefront and the maximum distortion is about 0.8 .A.. 8 .A..

  • Thermal distortion of the laser mirrors which are the Coude mirrors of the laser beam director and the wavefront error caused by the thermal distortion are studied. Coude mirrors consist of three relay mirrors and one fast steering mirror. The mirrors have reflectivity of 99.5% with respect to the laser wavelength of $3.8\;{\mu}m$, and absorption of 500 W per second. Thermal distortion and its related wavefront errors are studied with laser beam irradiation for 5 seconds. For the relay mirror, the wavefront error is 334 nm_PV, 98 nm rms and for fast steering mirror, $11.5\;{\mu}m$_PV, $3{\mu}m$ rms.

  • The laser transport system of the high power laser facility is mainly composed of large-aperture laser transport mirrors (TMs). Obtaining the high-resolution online damage images during the operation, which is of great significance for operating safely of the mirrors and the facility. Based on wavefront coding, pan-tilt scanning and image stitching technologies, an online laser-damage images detection system is designed, and it can achieve high-precision detection of surface characteristics of large-aperture laser transport mirrors. The preliminary simulation proves that the system can solve the depth of field matching problem caused by pan-tilt tilt imaging and achieve higher resolution.

  • Wavefront-coding imaging can achieve high-quality imaging along with a wide range of defocus. In this paper, the anti-laser detection and damage performance of wavefront-coding imaging systems using different asymmetric phase masks are studied, through modeling and simulation. Based on FresnelKirchhoff diffraction theory, the laser-propagation model of the wavefront-coding imaging system is established. The model uses defocus distance rather than wave aberration to characterize the degree of defocus of an imaging system. Then, based on a given defocus range, an optimization method based on Fisher information is used to determine the optimal phase-mask parameters. Finally, the anti-laser detection and damage performance of asymmetric phase masks at different defocus distances and propagation distances are simulated and analyzed. When studying the influence of defocus distance, compared to conventional imaging, the maximum single-pixel receiving power and echo-detection receiving power of asymmetric phase masks are reduced by about one and two orders of magnitude respectively. When exploring the influence of propagation distance, the maximum single-pixel receiving power of asymmetric phase masks decreases by about one order of magnitude and remains stable, and the echodetection receiving power gradually decreases with increasing propagation distance, until it approaches zero.

  • In this paper, we presented the development results of high speed wavefront sensor which is used in diagnosing the beam quality of He-Ne laser for adaptive optics system. The beam quality information of laser in AO system is necessarily required for diagnosing the optical components or correcting the distorted wavefront afterward. According to system requirements, normally, it is requested that there are high precision of measurement and real time processing speed. The developed wavefront sensor in this paper achieved maximum 30Hz of measurement rate and ${\lambda}/20(\;{@}\;{\lambda}=0.6328{\mu}m)$ of measurement precision in RMS. We also applied the developed into an experimental adaptive system and verified the performance of it by correcting the aberrated wavefront with a rate of 30Hz and $\lambda$/20 precision using the combination of the developed and PID control algorithm.

  • To overcome the capture-range problem in phase-diversity phase retrieval (PDPR), a geometrical-optics initial-estimate method is proposed to avoid a local minimum and to improve the accuracy of laser-wavefront measurement. We calculate the low-order aberrations through the geometrical-optics model, which is based on the two spot images in the propagation path of the laser, and provide it as a starting guess for the PDPR algorithm. Simulations show that this improves the accuracy of wavefront recovery by 62.17% compared to other initial values, and the iteration time with our method is reduced by 28.96%. That is, this approach can solve the capture-range problem.

  • To account for the internal thermal effects of solid-state lasers, a method using a back propagation (BP) neural network integrated with a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is developed, which is a new wavefront distortion correction technique. In particular, by using a slab laser model, a series of fiber pumped sources are employed to form a controlled array to pump the gain medium, allowing the internal temperature field of the gain medium to be designed by altering the power of each pump source. Furthermore, the BP artificial neural network is employed to construct a nonlinear mapping relationship between the power matrix of the pump array and the thermally induced wavefront aberration. Lastly, the suppression of thermally induced wavefront distortion can be achieved by changing the power matrix of the pump array and obtaining the optimal pump light intensity distribution combined using the PSO algorithm. The minimal beam quality β can be obtained by optimally distributing the pumping light. Compared with the method of designing uniform pumping light into the gain medium, the theoretically computed single pass beam quality β value is optimized from 5.34 to 1.28. In this numerical analysis, experiments are conducted to validate the relationship between the thermally generated wavefront and certain pumping light distributions.
