Crystal Growth of Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG for Medical Lasers

  • Erbium doped garnet crystals were grown by Czochralski method. Relationshipes between crystal quality and crystal growth factors such as pulling rate, rotation rate and concentration of active ions and sensitizers were investigated. Optimum pulling and rotation rate for high quality Er:YAG crystal were 1 mm/hr and 20 rpm and for Er,Cr:YSGG crystal 2-4 mm/hr and 10 rpm respectively. The size of the crystals grown was up to 20-30 mm in diameters and 95-135 mm in length. Er:YAG crystal grown under the nitrogen atmosphere was pink and transparent and Er,Cr:YSGG under the 98% {{{{ { N}_{ 2} }}}} and 2% {{{{ { O}_{2 } }}}} was dark green and transparent. Under the polarizing microscopic observations with crossed polar, striations and {211} core facets were detected. Spectroscopic properties for Er,Cr:YSGG laser rods with <111> axis, 80 mm in length and 6.3 mm in diameter for medical laser applications of 2.79 ${\mu}$m wavelength were manufactured and then laser oscillation was achieved.

반도체 레이저의 광 주입을 이용한 혼동 통신망의 암호화 기법 분석 (Analyses of Encryption Method for Chaos Communication Using Optical Injection Locked Semiconductor Lasers)

  • We theoretically studied synchronization of chaotic oscillation in semiconductor lasers with chaotic light injection feed-back induced chaotic light generated from a master semiconductor laser was injected into a solitary slave semiconductor laser. The slave laser subsequently exhibited synchronized chaotic output for a wide parameter range with strong injection and frequency detuning within the injection locking scheme. We also analytically examined chaos synchronization based on a linear stability analysis from the view point of synchronization based on a linear stability analysis from the view point of modulation response of injection locked semiconductor lasers to chaotic light signal.

자유표면변형을 고려한 저에너지밀도 레이저 용접공정 해석 (A study of low-power density laser welding process with evolution of free surface)

  • In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the evolution of weld pool geometry with moving free surface during low-energy density laser welding process. The free surface elevates near the weld pool edge if ${\partial}{\sigma}/dT$ is dominantly negative. On the contrary, the free surface rise at the center of weld pool in case of mainly positive ${\partial}{\sigma}/dT$. The predicted weld pool width and depth with moving free surface are 5∼15%$5{\sim}15%$ greater than those with flat weld pool surface. It is considered that weld pool surface oscillation during melting process augments convective heat transfer rate in the weld pool.

Fabry-Perot 공진기형 AlGaAs 반도체 레이저 증폭기의 이득특성 (Gain Characteristics of Fabry-Perot Type AlGaAs Semiconductor Laser Amplifier)

  • 단일 종모드로 동작하며, 10mW의 출력을 가지는 AlGaAs 반도체 레이저를 이용하여 Fabry-Perot 공진기형 레이저 증폭기 시스템을 구성하고 비포화 신호이득(unsaturated signal gain), 신호이득 대역폭(signal gain bandwidth), 포화출력(saturation power)을 측정하였다. 증폭기 레이저의 펌핑전류에 따른 비포화 신호 이득은 발진 문턱 전류 근처에서 $0.7\mu\textrmW$의 레이저 출력을 증폭기 레이저에 입사시켰을 때 최대 25dB을 얻었으며 이때 신호이득의 대역폭이 3 GHz 정도임을 확인하였다. 또한 입력 세기(input power)에 따른 비포화 신호이득의 변화를 측정하고 이때의 포화출력을 측정하였다.

상용주파수 교류방전 $CO_2$ 레이저의 동작 특성 (A Study on the Operational Characteristics of $CO_2$ Laser Excited by 60Hz AC Discharges)

  • In this study, it is the purpose to develope a cheap and compact $CO_2$ laser and to apply 60 Hz AC discharges as a new exciting source. An axial and water cooledtype was adopted as the laser mode. The laser performance characteristics as various parameters, such as gas pressure and discharge current, have been investigated. And the laser output and the efficiency of DC and 60 Hz AC discharge-exciting type have been measured and compared for the different input powers at the static operational pressure. As a result, the case of 60 Hz AC discharge-exciting type, the laser oscillation began at the condition of operational pressure 6 Torr and discharge current 5 mA. A maximum laser output of about 32 W was obtained at an operational pressure of 18 Toorr and a discharge current of 30 mA. In addition, the laser output was saturated from an operational pressure of about 14 Torr and a discharge current of about 20 mA. In this $CO_2$ laser, the laser output of 60 Hz AC discharge-exciting type was slightly higher than that of DC discharge-exciting type. And the laser efficiency was about 10 to 13% for the various operational pressures and the discharge currents.

고속 통신용 DFB 레이저의 빔 분포 해석 (Beam Profile Analysis of DFB Laser for High Speed Communications)

  • 본 연구에서는 무반사 코팅을 하지 않은, 두 개의 거울 면을 갖는 1.55um 파장용 DFB(Distributed Feedback) 레이저에서 굴절률 격자와 이득 격자가 동시에 존재할 때, 해석 프로그램을 개발하여 종 방향으로 발진 모드의 빔 분포를 해석하였다. 굴절률 격자와 이득 격자가 거울 면에서 갖는 위상 값의 변화에 따라서, δL<0인 경우에 대하여, DFB 레이저의 발진 모드에 대한 발진 이득, 빔 분포 |R(z)|와 |S(z)|, 그리고 방사전력비 Pl/Pr를 비교 분석하였다. 거울 면에서의 격자 위상 값에 관계없이 발진 모드의 문턱 전류를 낮추고 주파수 안정성을 높이기 위해서는, κL이 8보다 커야한다.

  • 본 논문에서는 벽개된 두 거울 면을 갖는, 1.55um 파장인 DFB 레이저에서 이득 그레이팅과 굴절률 그레이팅이 함께 존재할 때, 편의상 ρl의 위상=0으로 고정시키고, ρr의 위상을 -π/2, π, π/2, 0인 경우로 변화시킬 때, 발진 주파수와 발진 이득의 변화를 이론적으로 해석하였다. δL<0인 경우, (ρl의 위상=0, ρr의 위상=0)인 경우에, κL을 0.1로부터 10까지 증가시킬 때, 발진하기 위해 요구되는 발진 이득이 가장 낮은 경우는 κL=10인 경우이고, 이때 고차 모드와의 발진 이득의 차이가 커서 가장 안정된 주파수 동작을 얻을 수 있다. δL>0인 경우, (ρl의 위상=0, ρr의 위상=π)인 경우에, κL을 0.1로부터 10까지 증가시킬 때, 발진하기 위해 요구되는 발진 이득이 가장 낮은 경우는 κL=10이고, 이때 고차 모드와의 발진 이득의 차이가 커서 가장 안정된 주파수 동작을 얻을 수 있다.

  • -Part I- As market needs become more various, the production of smaller quantities of a wider variety of products becomes increasingly important. In addition, in order to meet demands for more efficient production, long-term unmanned factory operation is prevailing at a remarkable pace. Within this context, laser machines are gaining increasing popularity for use in applications such as cutting and welding metallic and ceramic materials. FANUC supplies four models of $CO_2$ laser oscillators with laser power ranging from 1.5㎾ to 6㎾ on an OEM basis to machine tool builders. However, FANUC has been requested to produce laser oscillators that allow more compact and lower-cost laser machines to be built. To meet such demands, FANUC has developed six models of Slab type YAG laser oscillators with output power ranging from 150W to 2㎾. These oscillators are designed mainly fur cutting and welding sheet metals. The oscillator has an exceptionally superior laser beam quality compared to conventional YAG laser oscillators, thus providing significantly improved machining capability. In addition, the laser beam of the oscillator can be efficiently transmitted through quartz optical fibers, enabling laser machines to be simplified and made more compact. This paper introduces the features of FANUC’s developed Slab type YAG laser oscillators and their applications. - Part II - All-solid-state lasers employing laser diodes (LD) as a source of pumping solid-state laser feature high efficiency, compactness, and high reliability. Thus, they are expected to provide a new generation of processing tools in various fields, especially in automobile and aircraft industries where great hopes are being placed on laser welding technology for steel plates and aluminum materials for which a significant growth in demand is expected. Also, in power plants, it is hoped that reliability and safety will be improved by using the laser welding technology. As in the above, the advent of high-power all-solid-state lasers may not only bring a great technological innovation to existing industry, but also create new industry. This is the background for this project, which has set its sights on the development of high-power, all-solid-state lasers with an average output of over 10㎾, an oscillation efficiency of over 20%, and a laser head volume of below 0.05㎥. FANUC Ltd. is responsible for the research and development of slab type lasers, and TOSHIBA Corp. far rod type lasers. By pumping slab type Nd: YAG crystal and by using quasi-continuous wave (QCW) type LD stacks, FANUC has already obtained an average output power of 1.7㎾, an optical conversion efficiency of 42%, and an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 16%. These conversion efficiencies are the best results the world has ever seen in the field of high-power all-solid-state lasers. TOSHIBA Corp. has also obtained an output power of 1.2㎾, an optical conversion efficiency of 30%, and an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 12%, by pumping the rod type Nd: YAG crystal by continuous wave (CW) type LD stacks. The laser power achieved by TOSHIBA Corp. is also a new world record in the field of rod type all-solid-state lasers. This report provides details of the above results and some information on future development plans.

  • Optical parametric oscillator(OPO) has been used to generate coherent and tunable laser source with birefringent phase-matching technique in various nonlinear materials. In birefringent phase-matching, the output wavelength is controlled with angle or temperature tuning of the refractive index. However these tuning methods have several limitations such as restriction of tuning wavelength due to reasonable angular and temperature tuning ranges, Poynting vector walk-off which limits the interaction length, and thermal stabilization time. Stability Properties of Semiconductor Lasers with Optical Feedback from an External Grating

  • We report an analysis on the stability properties of external cavity semiconductor lasers exposed to strong feedback from an external grating. The frequency range of stable single mode oscillation is found to depend on the offset between the resonance frequency of the solitary laser and the frequency of maximum reflection from the grating.
