Experimental methods for making quantitative measurements of velocity fields in non-Newtonian fluids are reviewed. Techniques based on light scattering spectroscopy - laser Doppler velocimetry and homodyne light scattering spectroscopy, techniques based on imaging the displacement of markers - including particle image velocimetry and molecular tagging velocimetry, and techniques based on nuclear magnetic resonance imaging are discussed. The special advantages and disadvantages of each method are summarized, and their applications to non-Newtonian flows are briefly reviewed. Example data from each technique are also included.

We observe the distortion of the back scattered Stokes pulse and the complementary distortion of the transmitted pulse by the stimulated Brillouin scattering when a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser pulse injected into a single mode optical fiber. We determine the constant required energy for the SBS by comparing their temporal shapes.
Soot formation and oxidation is closely related to the combustion phenomena inside a diesel engine. Laser-based diagnostics provide a means for improving our understanding of diesel combustion, because they have highly temporal and spatial ability. To understand the soot behavior we did preliminary study by taking flame luminosity photographs and 2-D images of soot distribution using Laser Elastic Scattering(LIS) and Laser-Induced Incandescence(LII). From the data we found that soot concentration was high in the bowl and disappeared from the central region in the late combustion stage and that soot exists in the flame using luminosity, LIS and LII.
Optical Line Patternator(OLP) has been applied to get a distribution of the spray at high ambient pressure. OLP is a combined technique of extinction measurement and image processing. The attenuated intensity of laser beam after traversing spray region was measured by using a photo-detector, and the line image of Mie-scattering was captured simultaneously in the path of each laser beam by using a CCD camera. The distribution of extinction coefficient in the spray is obtained by processing these data with the algebraic reconstruction technique. From the distribution of extinction coefficient, the surface distribution of spray can be reconstructed. OLP does not use laser sheet but use laser beam so that the noise effect of multiple scattering, caused by increasing number density of droplet in high pressure environment, is reduced drastically. OLP is expected as a suitable method which can investigate the characteristics of relatively large spray under the high pressure environment such as liquid rocket engine.

The scanning laser source (SLS) technique has been proposed recently as an effective way to investigate small surface-breaking defects, By monitoring the amplitude and frequency changes of the ultrasound generated as the SLS scans over a defect, the SLS technique has provided enhanced signal-to-noise performance compared to the traditional pitch-catch or pulse-echo ultrasonic methods, An extension of the SLS approach to map defects in microdevices is proposed by bringing both the generator and the receiver to the near-field scattering region of the defects, To facilitate near-field ultrasound measurement, silicon microcantilever probes are fabricated using microfabrication technique and their acoustical characteristics are investigated, Then, both the laser-generated ultrasonic source and the microcantilever probe are used to monitor near-field scattering by a surface-breaking defect.
Tibial defect, or fracture is very routine musculoskeletal case which brings fully uncomfortable and painful situations to patient. Moreover, it has long hospitalization period because of its risk of non-union. There are many studies using ultrasound, vibration, and laser for bone regeneration to figure out fast bone healing. Among them, Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is already known that it is very easy to treat and may have positive effect for bone regeneration. However, LLLT has uncertain energy dose because of scattering and absorption of laser in tissue. In this study, we used interstitial LLLT to treat tibial defect in animal study. The Interstitial LLLT can overcome some limitations caused by laser scattering or absorption in tissue medium. The results were evaluated using u-CT which can calculate X-ray attenuation coefficient and bone volume of bone defect area. These results showed that interstitial LLLT may affect fast bone healing process in early phase.

In order to clarify the characteristics of soot formation and oxidation in-cylinder of a diesel engine, it is necessary to diagnose accurately for combustion of in-cylinder. The past techniques for soot measurement have limitations in providing the characteristics of soot in a diesel engine, whereas, laser-based 2D imaging diagnostics have the potential to provide better temporally and spatially resolved measurements of the soot distribution. We rebuilt an optically accessible diesel engine which is similar to the conditions of a conventional engine and tried to measure soot distribution in a cylinder of the diesel engine using laser induced scattering(LIS) and laser induced incandescence(LII). Some results were acquired in this study. LIS and LII signal that show soot distribution of a in-cylinder were taken by ICCD properly. The signal of LIS was intenser than that of LII. Although they have some differences of signal intensity in early combusion period, both of signals show that they are generally similar in late combustion period, after ATDC 50 degree.

Ignition delay of micro/nano aluminum particles is caused by aluminum oxide shell. The method of minimizing this ignition delay is proposed in the study. Generating and heating of particles are processed at the same time. As soon as heated particles are produced, they immediately contact with oxygen. Chemical reaction is induced on the contact surface instead of crystallization of oxide shell. Finally particles are ignited. Aluminum particles are generated by laser ablation on an aluminum plate using Nd:YAG pulse laser. Injected particles are confirmed through visualization of particles using scattering method. $CO_2$ continuous laser supplies heat to aluminum plate and generated particles. Trace of burning particles is observed in the experiment.
Background and Objectives Although lasers have been widely applied in tissue treatment, the light penetration depth in tissues is limited by the tissue turbidity and affected by its absorption and scattering characteristics. This study investigated the effect of using an optical clearing agent (OCA) on tissue to improve the therapeutic effect of 1064 nm wavelength laser light by reducing the heat generated on the skin surface and increasing the penetration depth. Materials and Methods A diode laser (λ = 1064 nm) was applied to a porcine specimen with and without OCA to investigate the penetration depth of the laser light and temperature distribution. A numerical simulation using the finite element method was performed to investigate the temperature distribution of the specimen compared to ex-vivo experiments using a thermocouple and double-integrating sphere to measure the temperature profile and optical properties of the tissue, respectively. Results Simulation results showed a decrease in tissue surface temperature with increased penetration depth when the OCA was applied. Furthermore, both absorption and scattering coefficients decreased with the application of OCA. In ex-vivo experiments, temperatures decreased for the tissue surface and the fat layer with the OCA, but not for the muscle layer. Conclusion The use of an OCA may be helpful for reducing surface heat generation and enhance the light penetration depth in various near-infrared laser treatments.

The influences of Methotrexate as fluorophor, scatterer, absorber in turbid material by light scattering were interpreted for the scattered fluorescence intensity and wavelength, it has been studied the molecular properties by laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy. It has been found that the effects of optical properties in scattering media by the optical parameters((${\mu}_s$, ${\mu}_a$, ${\mu}_t$). The value of scattering coefficient ${\mu}_s$ is large by means of the increasing particles of L-${\alpha}$-Phosphatidylcholine, it has been found that the slope decays exponentially as a function of depth from laser source to detector. It may also aid in designing the best model for oil chemistry, laser medicine and application of medical engineering.
