A novel technique for fine particle beam focusing under the atmospheric pressure is introduced using a radiation pressure assisted aerodynamic lens. To introduce the radiation pressure in the aerodynamic focusing system, a 25 mm plano-convex lens having 2.5 mm hole at its center is used as an orifice. The particle beam width is measured for various laser power, particle size, and flow velocity. In addition, the effect of the laser characteristics on the beam focusing is evaluated comparing an Ar-Ion continuous wave laser and a pulsed Nd-YAG laser. For the pure aerodynamic focusing system, the particle beam width was decreased as increasing particle size and Reynolds number. For the particle diameter of 0.5 ${\mu}m$, the particle beam was broken due to the secondary flow at Reynolds number of 694. Using the Ar-Ion CW laser, the particle beam width becomes smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system about 16 %, 11.4 % and 9.6 % for PSL particle size of 2.5 ${\mu}m$, 1.0 ${\mu}m$, and 0.5 ${\mu}m$ respectively at the Reynolds number of 320. Particle beam width was minimized around the laser power of 0.2 W. However, as increasing the laser power higher than 0.4 W, the particle beam width was increased a little and it approached almost a constant value which is still smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system. The radiation pressure effect on the particle beam width is intensified as Reynolds number decreases or particle size increases relatively. On the other hand, using 30 Hz pulsed Nd-YAG laser, the effect of the radiation pressure on the particle beam width was not distinct unlike Ar-Ion CW laser.
In laser materials processing, localized heating, melting and evaporation caused by focused laser radiation forms a vapor on the material surface. The plume is generally an unstable entity, fluctuating according to its own dynamics. The beam is refracted and absorbed as it traverses the plume, thus modifying its power density on the surface of the condensed phases. This modifies material evaporation and optical properties of the plume. A laser-produced plasma plume simulation is completed using axisymmetric, high-temperature gas dynamic model including the laser radiation power absorption, refraction, and reflection. The physical properties and velocity profiles are verified using the published experimental and numerical results. The simulation results provide the effect of plasma plume fluctuations on the laser power density and quantitative beam radius changes on the material surface. It is proved that beam absorption, reflection and defocusing effects through the plume are essential to obtain appropriate mathematical simulation results. It is also found that absorption of the beam in the plume has much less direct effect on the beam power density at the material surface than defocusing does and helium gas is more efficient in reducing the beam refraction and absorption effect compared to argon gas for common laser materials processing.

An all-reflective, simple noncollinear second harmonic (SH) autocorrelator is described for monitoring the shot-to-shot behavior of ultrashort high-power laser pulses. Two mirrors are used for the dispersion-free splitting of a pulse into two halves. One of the mirrors is able to adjust the delay time and angle between two halves of the laser pulse in a nonlinear crystal. We present the possibility of real-time measurement of the pulse duration, peak intensity (or energy), and the pointing jitters of a laser pulse, by analyzing the spatial profile of the SH autocorrelation signal measured by a CCD camera. The measurement of the shot-to-shot variation of those parameters will be important for the detailed characterization of laser accelerated electrons or protons.
Degradation problem due to long term service in machine or structure is now one of important problems in whole industrial field. In this study, pressure vessel steel, Cr-Mo steel, which was used more than 60,000 hours, was surface-modified by laser beam radiation for the improvement of fatigue strength. To find out optimum radiation condition, hardness, residual stress measurement and fatigue tests were carried out with the specimen of different radiation conditions. Experimental results show that micro-hardness values on the surface of the radiated specimens were approximately 2.2 times higher than those of un-radiated ones. In the depth direction of the specimen, hardness on the surface showed maximum value and was decreased at the inside the specimen. Different hardness values are due to the energy density Q which was absorbed by the specimen. Fatigue tests show that fatigue life was improved by the compressive residual stress after laser beam radiation. However, some specimens with differednt conditions show the shorter fatigue life. It means that laser beam radiation with optimum parameter can improve thae fatigue strength.
A novel technique for fine particle beam focusing under the atmospheric pressure is introduced using a radiation pressure assisted aerodynamic lens. To introduce the radiation pressure in the aerodynamic focusing system, a 25m plano-convex lens having 2.5mm hole at its center is used as an orifice. The particle beam width is measured for various laser power, particle size, and flow velocity. In addition, the effect of the laser characteristics on the beam focusing is evaluated comparing an optical tweezers type and pure gradient force type. For the pure aerodynamic focusing system, the particle beam width was decreased as increasing particle size and Reynolds number. Using the optical tweezers type, the particle beam width becomes smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system about $16\%,\;11.4\%\;and\;9.6\%$ for PSL particle size of $2.5{\mu}m,\;1.0{\mu}m,\;and\;0.5{\mu}m$, respectively. Particle beam width was minimized around the laser power of 0.2W. However, as increasing the laser power higher than 0.4W, the particle beam width was increased a little and it approached almost a constant value which is still smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system. For pure gradient force type, the reduction of the particle beam width was smaller than optical tweezers type but proportional to laser power. The radiation pressure effect on the particle beam width is intensified as Reynolds number decreases or particle size increases relatively.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to measure the dose distribution of Photodynamic therapy(PDT) laser with 635 nm wavelength using GafChromic film. Method & Result: We made each output 300 J by changing mW and sec using the laser beam radiation mode such as C.W(Continuous Wave) mode, Pulse mode and Burst Pulse mode and measured the does at 0 mm and 5 mm of distance from optic fiber catheter end to the film, and at 5 mm distance by changing the angle of the end of the optic fiber catheter as $0^{\circ}$ and $0.5^{\circ}$. The radiated film was scanned and OD(Optical Density) was compared. And two-dimensional isodose curves were obtained and the consistency of shapes was compared. It was confirmed that there was consistency between optic density and the dose radiated on the film when we radiated GafChromic film by changing distance and angle of 300 J output in each radiation mode coordinating mW and sec. Conclusion: In this study, we could identify the stability according to changes in laser beam modes, changes in output according to distance, changes in uniformity according to angle, and beam profiles using GafChromic film, and we could also get two-dimensional isodose curve. It was found that small change in the distance and angle that is made when optic fiber catheter was contacted on the treatment area did not make big effects on the output of beam and the uniformity of dose, and it was also found that GafChromic film could be utilized for the purpose of QA of PDT laser beam.
The principal obstacle to selection of a laser processing method in production is its relatively high equipment cost and the natural unwillingness of production supervision to try something new until it is thoroughly proven. The major objective of this work is focused on the combined features of gas tungsten arc and a low-power cold laser beam. In this work, the laser beam from a 7 watts carbon monoxide laser was combined with electrical discharges from a short-pulsed capacitive discharge GTA welding power supply. When the low power CO laser beam passes through a special composition shielding gas, the CO molecules in the gas absorbs the radiation, and ionizes through a process blown as non-equilibrium, vibration-vibration pumping. The resulting laser-induced plasma(LIP) was positioned between various configurations of electrodes. The high-voltage impulse applied to the electrodes forced rapid electrical breakdown between the electrodes. Electrical discharges between tungsten electrodes and aluminum sheet specimens followed the ionized path provided by LIP. The result was well-focused melted spots.
In this paper, we studied a machining method using a diffractive beam splitter (DBS) and multi- pulse repeated radiation for breathable film. We fabricated micro-grooves on polypropylene (PP) films using multi-pulse radiation and one-shot radiation (radiating pulses at once) and a DBS. In the result, width and depth of the PP film using multi-pulse repeated radiation were more precisely controllable. Therefore, this method can be applicable to in manufacturing breathable film precisely at a high speed.
Laser decontamination of radioactive surfaces is an innovative technology. Our contribution to improving this technology includes studies on laser beam decontamination with a pulsed laser of an average power of 150 W, equipped with a hand guided working head. Our investigations are focused on metallic surfaces typical in nuclear power plants, such as stainless steel, bright and rusted mild steel, galvanized steel, and painted steel. As typical nuclides of contaminated surfaces we chose Co-60 and Cs-137, the most frequently occurring nuclides in many nuclear plant components; Sr-85 as a representative of Sr-90, the potentially most harmful fission nuclide; and Am-241 as a representative of the minor alpha-radiation emitting actinides. Here, we present our results of decontamination and recovery ratios. Decontamination ratios of 90-100% were achieved on different surfaces.
A laser system for therapy of cancer is proposed in this paper. In order to accuracy and statistical output control we used the constant current control method and designed the power source to protect the resonator from the over -current, rush-current and electrical fault. The most important things are the radiation type for cancer therapy in laser system, we developed the radiation type of cw, pulse, and burst pulse. The experimental result show that laser beam power increase linearly from 100mW to 300mW for input current increasing and the exposure time.
