  • A 7-week growth trial was conducted to investigate the effects of yeasts (Kluyveromyces fragilis and Candida utilis) with or without cell wall chemical treatment (protoplasted) in formulated diets on growth and body composition of larval ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis). Three replicate groups of ap average weighing 100 mg were fed diets containing each level ($5{\%}$) of K. fragilis, protoplasted K. fragilis, C. utilis, protoplasted C. utilis or brewer's yeast as an additive. Survival rate of fish fed the diet containing protoplasted K. fragilis, C. utilis or protoplasted C. utilis was higher than that of fish tea the control diet (P<0.05). Body weight .gain of fish fed the diet containing protoplasted K. fragilis was higher than that of fish fed the control diet (P<0.05). Crude protein and ash contents of Ssh were not significantly affected by the different dietary yeasts (P>0.05), On the other hand, crude lipid content of fish fed the diet containing K. fragilis, protoplasted K. fragilis or brewer's yeast was higher than that of fish fed the control diet (P<0.05). Amino acids composition of fish was not significantly affected by the different dietary yeasts (P>0.05), except aspartic acid. The results suggest that protoplasted K. fragilis as an additive in micro-formulated diet can improve weight gain and body quality of larval ayu.

  • To assess the adverse effects of suspended solids on fishes, the hatching rate of embryo, and survival and growth of larvae were measured with common fish species of river such as crusian carp (Carassius auratus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and medaka (Oryzias latipes). Bioassay on hatching rate of embryo was conducted with a range of turbidity as 10 levels from 0.2 to 8,080 NTU. Another bioassay on 4-day larval survival and 21-day larval growth were also conducted with a range of turbidity as 8 levels from 0.1 to 8,260 NTU, and 6 levels from 0.7 to 2,030 NTU, respectively. The hatching rate of C. auratus was not significantly different from that of control at turbidity below 4,040 NTU, whereas it decreased when turbidity was 8,080 NTU (p<0.05). The hatching rate of C. carpio was not affected by concentration of suspended solids. For O. latipes, the hatching rate significantly decreased from 254 NTU (p<0.001) and it was zero when turbidity was 8,080 NTU. The 4-day survival of larvae of all 3 species was not affected by turbidity, while the larval growth of all 3 species was significantly affected. The turbidity effect on the growth of C. auratus and C. carpio was observed from 7 days after the exposure at turbidity level of 145, 143 NTU, respectively. The turbidity effect on the growth of O. latipes was observed from 14 days after the exposure at turbidity level of 254 NTU. The results of this study will provide the basic information for the derivation of water quality criteria on suspended solids for the protection of aquatic ecosystem and the quantitative ecological risk assessment of freshwater environment.

  • Silkworm is known to be damaged under the unfavorable environmental conditions. Recently, it has been often argued that nicotine is a main factor to affect the silkworm nutritional balance and to result in decrease of quantitative characters, and unbalance of larval nutrition. Especially in spring season, there is tendency to produce nicotine damage to silkworm fed with the mulberry leaf near to tobacco field early cultivated in mulching system. In these connections, the trial was made in the different pots placing by the different distance 10rn, 20m, 40m, and 60m in the direction of east-north from the tobacco field. Location of pot near to the tobacco fold is 40m below the tobacco Held and gradually higher than the tobacco field by 10 degree of slope. In addition, when the mulberry field is divided into two areas from the east-south to west-north, southern east zone is lowering down below 10 degree of slope and has 36% of east-south wind, 21% of south-east wind and 16% of south wind, etc. Pots are left on the mulberry field from the completion of lower part leaf harvest to just before upper part leaf harvest is completed for 32 days. Then silkworm at 4th-5th stage was fed with the leaf grown during the period and larval characters are statistically analyzed. The results are summarized as follows: 1. 10-40m distant pot statistically at the same level has the longest larval duration and 60m distant pot is. not significant at 5% level. Whole larval duration has same tendency as in the 5th larval duration. 2. Percentage of delayed molting larvae at the 5th stage is increased in 10m distant pot and there is no significance statistically in other pots, as compared with that of control. 3. It is not showed that there is no damage to mortality of the old larvae in 60m distant pot. 4. 10-20m distant pot produces a low pupation and others are at the same level statistically at 5% significance, 5. It is showed that nicotine damage is occurred in single cocoon freight and cocoon shell weight up to 60m distant pot, rather higher damage in cocoon shell weight than in single cocoon weight. 6. It is showed that cocoon yield from 10, 000 molted larvae including double cocoon is decreased up to 40m distant pot far from the tobacco field in which 40% of cocoon yield in 10m distant pot by 7kg, 26% of cocoon yield in 20m distant pot by 3.9kg, 24% of cocoon yield in 40m distant pot by 3.6kg, and 12% of cocoon yield in 60m distant pot by 1.8kg, as compared with control. However, there is no significance statistically at 5% level in 60m distant pot. With these above results, it is concluded that nicotine da mage could be occurred in cocoon yield and cocoon quality up to 60m distant far from the tobacco field.

  • Nutrition plays an important role in maintaining the larval health, cocoon quality and reproductive potential in Antheraea mylitta D. Nutritional efficiency greatly influenced if food is not adequate and of quality. A. mylitta silkworms were subjected to food deprivation for the period of 0 hr to 12 hrs /day to assess its effect on various nutritional parameters and indices, and its manifestation at different levels. Food ingesta, digesta, gain in body weight declined significantly at each level of deprivation, so also food utilization efficiency like consumption index (CI), growth rate (GR), approximate digestibility (AD), and efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI). This stress leads to decline in mean daily food ingesta by 16.73% to 39.76% and digesta by 28.98% to 54.01 % following a significant reduction in average daily body weight gain (27.68% to 55.09%). Food deprivation a1so caused significant loss in the silk gland weight, cocoon and shell weight (14.37% to 53.69%), lowered the fecundity (35.86 % to 83.59%) and in number of eggs laid per gram body weight, but simultaneously the number of non-chorionated eggs increased significantly.

  • Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is one of the most commercially important species of farmed marine fish in Korea. Although techniques for rearing the larva of this species are improving, production costs are also increasing due to microbial influences and genetic degradation caused by successive culturing. Since the demand for healthy seed, which requires eggs of good quality of, is high, we examined the effects of nutrient composition on the size of P. olivaceus eggs. We analyzed floating (live) and sunken (dead) eggs of P. olivaceus from five different hatcheries for their size and amino and fatty acid composition. The sizes of eggs and oil globules from floating vs. sunken eggs were significantly different at p<0.05. No significant relationships were observed, however, among larval length, hatching percentage, and egg and oil globule size. The dry weight and amino acid levels of floating eggs were greater than those of sunken eggs (p<0.05), but no difference in fatty acid content was observed.

  • An experiment was carried out to boost the production of tasar crops through application of secondary nutrients. Different combinations of secondary nutrients were prepared and its effect was studied on the yield and quality of leaves of tasar food plant Terminalia tomentosa W & A with 2.4 m ${\times}$ 2.4 m spacing and cocoon characters of tasar silkworm Antheraea mylitta Drury reared on them. Among different combinations of secondary nutrients, foliar application of magnesium sulphate (2%, w/v) and basal application of 3 quintal/ha of calcium carbonate (secondary nutrient combination SM5) was found to be the best in crop improvement. It improves the quantity and quality of leaves as well as the commercial characters of cocoons. As a result, silk production improves. Under this combination, leaf yield increased by 26.55% in comparison to control. Average increase in moisture, total mineral, crude protein and total carbohydrate was 3.26%, 20.84%, 15.39% and 17.85% respectively as compared with control. Further, bio assay studies revealed that average larval weight, E.R.R., cocoon weight, shell weight and silk ratio percent increased by 11.25%, 25.71%, 20.05%, 35.14% and 12.17% respectively over control which indicates that secondary nutrient combination $SM_5$ has significant role in improving the production of tasar crops.

  • To understand the relationship among different quantitative traits, correlation studies were performed by utilizing eighty-eight inbred strains of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. on twelve economic characters. Analysis resulted in correlation of 5th instar period with total larval period (r = 0.7882), cocoon weight with shell weight (r = 0.8326), shell weight with shell ratio (r = 0.5067), shell ratio with raw silk % (r = 0.7570), raw silk % with filament length (r = 0.3490), filament size (denier) with reelability (r = 0.3193) and boil-off loss % (r = 0.2792). Negative correlation was observed among filament length with filament size (r = 0.7582) and reelability with boil-off loss % (r = -0.3236). Correlation of different quantitative characters for quality silk production is discussed.

  • This study examined the characteristics of eggs obtained from layer chickens reared with feed that included Tenebrio molitor larvae, which were in turn bred using feed that included dried food waste powder. The eggs showed a tendency to be slightly thinner in the treated groups, but the Haugh unit indicating freshness was higher in the treated groups than the control group, and the 5% larval-treated group showed the highest value. The color of the yolk tended toward higher redness, lower brightness, and lower yellowness in the 5%-treated group, which also showed similar crude fat and protein values to the control group; the 10%- and 15% larval-treated groups had lower crude fat and protein values, although the carbohydrate content was higher. Structural amino acids in the treated groups showed a higher ratio of non-essential amino acids to essential amino acids than the control. The polyphenol content, which is an index of antioxidants, was highest in the 5%-treated group, and it is thought that this may affect the storage and antioxidant properties of the eggs. Thus, when employed with a feed source to maintain high protein and high fat, T. molitor larvae may cause critical changes in the nutrient content of eggs and improve their freshness.

  • Edible insects are gaining popularity as a potential future food source because of their high protein content and efficient use of space. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are noteworthy because they can be used as feed for various animals including reptiles, dogs, fish, chickens, and pigs. However, if the edible insect industry is to advance, we should use automation to reduce labor and increase production. Consequently, there is a growing demand for sensing technologies that can automate the evaluation of insect quality. This study used short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral imaging to predict the proximate composition of dried BSFL, including moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and crude ash content. The larvae were dried at various temperatures and times, and images were captured using an SWIR camera. A partial least-squares regression (PLSR) model was developed to predict the proximate content. The SWIR-based hyperspectral camera accurately predicted the proximate composition of BSFL from the best preprocessing model; moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and crude ash content were predicted with high accuracy, with R2 values of 0.89 or more, and root mean square error of prediction values were within 2%. Among preprocessing methods, mean normalization and max normalization methods were effective in proximate prediction models. Therefore, SWIR-based hyperspectral cameras can be used to create automated quality management systems for BSFL.
