A flux pump (FP) can inject the DC current into high temperature superconducting (HTS) field coils of a HTS rotating machine without slip ring and current lead. However, it has limits to improve the value of DC current, and has time constants of DC current according to inductances of the HTS field coils. When a large-scale HTS generator with the FP is designed, a proper point about the inductance, field current, and time constant is demanded to decide parameters of the generator. In this paper, a parameter tuning skill of a large-scale superconducting wind power generator for applying a FP has been proposed. The design of the FP has been fixed, and 12 MW HTS generators have been variously designed by adjusting parameters related with the inductance of the HTS field coil. The induced current values have been calculated based on the FP design. The time constants of the induced currents depending on the DC current values and inductances of the generator have been represented. The results of the parameter tuning of the HTS generator have been discussed in detail.
This paper presents the development of a hardware simulator for a 3-parallel grid-connected PMSG wind power system. With the development of permanent magnetic materials in recent years, the capacity of a PMSG based wind turbine system, which requires a full-scale power converter, has been raised up to a few MW. Since it is limited by the available semiconductor technology, such large amounts of power cannot be delivered with only one power converter. Hence, a parallel connecting technique for converters is required to reduce the ratings of the converters. In this paper, a hardware simulator with 3-parallel converters is described and its control issues are presented as well. Some experimental results are given to illustrate the performance of the simulator system.
In this study, we analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution of wind resources over Korea based on hourly observational data recorded over a period of 5 years from 457 stations belonging to Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The surface and 850 hPa wind data obtained from the Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System (KLAPS) and the Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System (RDAPS) over a period of 1 year are used as supplementary data sources. Wind speed is generally high over seashores, mountains, and islands. In 62 (13.5%) stations, mean wind speeds for 5 years are greater than $3ms^{-1}$. The effects of seasonal wind, land-sea breeze, and mountain-valley winds on wind resources over Korea are evaluated as follows: First, wind is weak during summer, particularly over the Sobaek Mountains. However, over the coastal region of the Gyeongnam-province, strong southwesterly winds are observed during summer owing to monsoon currents. Second, the wind speed decreases during night-time, particularly over the west coast, where the direction of the land breeze is opposite to that of the large-scale westerlies. Third, winds are not always strong over seashores and highly elevated areas. The wind speed is weaker over the seashore of the Gyeonggi-province than over the other seashores. High wind speed has been observed only at 5 stations out of the 22 high-altitude stations. Detailed information on the wind resources conditions at the 21 stations (15 inland stations and 6 island stations) with high wind speed in Korea, such as the mean wind speed, frequency of wind speed available (WSA) for electricity generation, shape and scale parameters of Weibull distribution, constancy of wind direction, and wind power density (WPD), have also been provided. Among total stations in Korea, the best possible wind resources for electricity generation are available at Gosan in Jeju Island (mean wind speed: $7.77ms^{-1}$, WSA: 92.6%, WPD: $683.9Wm^{-2}$) and at Mt. Gudeok in Busan (mean wind speed: $5.66ms^{-1}$, WSA: 91.0%, WPD: $215.7Wm^{-2}$).

Wind power which is one of renewable energies is higher economical efficiency and technical maturity than other renewable energies. Recently, the government of ROK announced to increase the proportion of renewable energy through the National Energy Plan. Also, industry required to deregulate for large-scale wind power as Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) is introduced. Wind power whereas the eco-friendly energy, is a serious level of damage of the natural environment and topography when the wind power is located. Therefore, the study selected the indicators required for site selection of wind power and proposed the feasible area for wind power based on wind resource map. We selected the 15 indicators including 12 legal protected area, Ecology and Nature Map, rarity, and connectivity (National Ecological Network). After site selection, we should be considered slope and altitude at the stage of design for wind farm to mitigate the environmental impact. Results of analysis showed that 22.3% of wind resource map is available to locate wind power in real. Through the field survey we had verified the accuracy of the results was significantly correct.
High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) synchronous generators can be designed with either an air-core type or iron-core type. The air-core type has higher efficiency under rated rotating speed and load than the iron-core type because of the iron losses which may produce much heat. However, the total length of HTS wire in the air-core type is longer than the iron-core type because the generated magnetic flux density of the air-core type is low. This paper deals with designs of 10 MW air-core and iron-core HTS wind power generators for wind turbines. Fully air-core, partially iron-core, and fully iron-core HTS generators are designed, and various stator winding methods in the three HTS generators are also considered, such as short-pitch concentrated winding, full-pitch concentrated winding, short-pitch distributed winding, and full-pitch distributed winding. These HTS generators are analyzed using a 3D finite elements method program. The analysis results of the HTS generators are discussed in detail, and the results will be effectively utilized for large-scale wind power generation systems.
Probabilistic assessment of voltage stability margin (VSM) with existence of correlated wind speeds is investigated. Nataf transformation is adopted to establish wind speed correlation (WSC) model. Based on the saddle-node bifurcation transversality condition equations and Monte Carlo simulation technique, probability distribution of VSM is determined. With correlation coefficients range low to high value, the effect of WSC on VSM is studied. In addition, two risk indexes are proposed and the possible threat caused by WSC is evaluated from the viewpoint of risk analysis. Experimental results show that the presence of correlated wind speeds is harmful to safe and stable operation of a power system as far as voltage stability is concerned. The achievement of this paper gives a detailed elaboration about the influence of WSC on voltage stability and provides a potentially effective analytical tool for modern power system with large-scale wind power sources integration.
The all vanadium redox-flow battery (V-RFB) is investigating as one of large-scale power storage systems. Particularly, V-RFB is being investigated as one of the power storage systems for the load leveling and output power equalization of the power systems using renewable energy such as solar and wind. In this paper, it was explained for the principle and construction, recent research review, economy, element technology in V-RFB.
Recently, the Korean government announced a plan to activate renewable energies, with focus on clean energy sources such as solar and wind power as the core and the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Unlike other photovoltaic (PV) systems, offshore PV installations are advantageous for large-scale expansion because of the ease of securing sites; they also enable lowering the power generation costs based on construction of large-scale power facilities of megawatt class or higher owing to low noise and landscape damage. However, any power generation should proceed with consideration of the special environmental conditions of the ocean. Above all, when installing large-scale facilities, it is important to reduce fluctuations of the structure and secure stability to actively respond to waves. This study is concerned with the development of a floating body technology that actively responds to waves so as to enable commercialization of offshore solar power. A unit platform for research and development on offshore PV generation was installed in the Saemangeum sea, and the structural fluctuations and stability were analyzed to ensure conformity with the major performance indicators.

A high-temperature superconducting(HTS) generators have been actively studied because of its advantages of weight, size, and efficiency. A large-scale superconducting wind power generator becomes a very low-speed high-torque rotating machine. In these machines, high electromagnetic force and torque are important issued. Two generators connected in series on one shaft design are one of the solution to overcome the high torque problem. In this paper, the authors design and analyze a 15 MW class HTS generator. The 15 MW HTS generator is confirmed in terms of magnetic field distribution and torque performance using a 3D finite element method. As a result, the designed generators generates less torque than a conventional generator. The designed 15 MW superconducting generator will be effectively utilized in the construction of the large-scale wind power generation system.
This paper aims to perform optimal operation and maintenance with an integrated monitoring system for offshore wind platforms. Based on the wind direction and wind speed data of existing wind farms, a monitoring system was established along with weather and weather data to maximize the operational efficiency of wind farms. Compared to wind power on land, offshore wind power is difficult to maintain due to weather, logistics and geographical limitations. Therefore, economic analysis of actual operation and maintenance is essential for large-scale offshore wind farms. In this paper, the availability of offshore wind farms was analyzed by using personnel resources, parts inventory, Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV) and Specialized service Operation Vessel (SOV) etc. before the actual operation and maintenance of wind farms. A comparative analysis was conducted to determine the optimum operating efficiency and economical maintenance costs.
