  • We believe in terins of information service systems that one of the best ways to develop a large scale database service system is to integrate the service capability of the Web and the dta management facility of database management systems in a complementary fashion. In such integation a database gateway in the core component, the web-database gateway accesses database management systems to serve the requests represented by using the Web technology. We designd BADA/Web be independent from the Web and DBMS and much as possible, which minrrizes the performance overhead caused by connecting database management systems and makes BADA/Web portable. BADA/Web incorporates TCL into a ibrary of it and handles concurrent requests efficiently. In this paper we describe our desingn and implementation experience in integrating the Web and BADA-III We evaluate the performance of BADA/Web by measuring and companing the latency and average response time for a simple query and also explore the effects of BADA/Web with some synthetie queries .

  • A major concern regarding the collection and storage of biodiversity information is the inefficiency of conventional taxonomic approaches in dealing with a large number of species. This inefficiency has increased the demand for automated, rapid, and reliable molecular identification systems and large-scale biological databases. DNA-based taxonomic approaches are now arguably a necessity in biodiversity studies. In particular, DNA barcoding using short DNA sequences provides an effective molecular tool for species identification. We constructed a large-scale database system that holds a collection of 5531 barcode sequences from 2429 Korean species. The Korea Barcode of Life database (KBOL, http://koreabarcode.org) is a web-based database system that is used for compiling a high volume of DNA barcode data and identifying unknown biological specimens. With the KBOL system, users can not only link DNA barcodes and biological information but can also undertake conservation activities, including environmental management, monitoring, and detecting significant organisms.

  • Visualization of the homology information is an important method to analyze the evolutionary and functional meanings of genes. With a database containing model genomes of Homo sapiens, Mus muculus, and Rattus norvegicus, we constructed a webbased comparative analysis tool, BioCovi, to visualize the homology information of mammalian sequences on a very large scale. The user interface has several features: it marks regions whose identity is greater than that specified, it shows or hides gaps from the result of global sequence alignment, and it inverts the graph when total identity is higher than the threshold specified.

  • This thesis describes the effective interfacing methods of PACS Modality based on the system installation andoperating experiences. PACS(Picture Archiving and Communication Systems) is a system for medical image archiving and communication using large storage device and high-speed network. The standard communication protocol of PACS is DICOM(Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine) based on TCP/IP and point-to-point protocol. However, there are many Non-DICOM Modalities and DICOM Modalities having problems. First, we had interfaced almost modalities. Fuji CR, GE CT, MRI, Angio, Fluoro, Phillips Angio, Shimadzu Fluoro. Ultrasound PACS, with the main PACS in the Seoul S Hospital as large scale hospital. And we manipulated the intelligent image distribution and the CT. MRI Interfaces never experienced beforein the Anyang J Hospital and the Chungju C Hospital as mid or small scale hospital. Technically, we developed both the DICOM Interface and the Non-DICOM Interface. At the last, the DICOM Worklist and the DICOM Print Interface were implemented in the Seoul B Hospital, the Bucheon SJ Hospital and the Seoul K Hospital independently with PACS. The Oracle, Sybase and MS-SQL are used as database, and UNIX, Macintosh, MS Windows as operating systems. And the Visual C++ and UNIX C are the main programming tools. We have used UTP, coaxial and fiber optic cable under 10/100 mbps LAN for networking.

  • The New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) is a 1-meter vacuum solar telescope that aims to observe the fine structures of active regions on the Sun. The main tasks of the NVST are high resolution imaging and spectral observations, including the measurements of the solar magnetic field. The NVST has been collecting more than 20 million FITS files since it began routine observations in 2012 and produces maximum observational records of 120 thousand files in a day. Given the large amount of files, the effective archiving and retrieval of files becomes a critical and urgent problem. In this study, we implement a new data archiving system for the NVST based on the Fastbit Not Only Structured Query Language (NoSQL) database. Comparing to the relational database (i.e., MySQL; My Structured Query Language), the Fastbit database manifests distinctive advantages on indexing and querying performance. In a large scale database of 40 million records, the multi-field combined query response time of Fastbit database is about 15 times faster and fully meets the requirements of the NVST. Our slestudy brings a new idea for massive astronomical data archiving and would contribute to the design of data management systems for other astronomical telescopes.

  • The advent of large-scale web services has resulted in gradual increase in the amount of data used in those services. These big data are managed efficiently by DBMS such as MySQL and MariaDB, which use InnoDB engine as their storage engine, since InnoDB guarantees ACID and is suitable for handling large-scale data. To improve I/O performance, InnoDB caches data and index of its database through a buffer pool. It also supports multiple buffer pools to mitigate lock contentions. However, the multiple buffer pool scheme leads to the additional data consistency overhead. In this paper, we analyze the overhead of the multiple buffer pool scheme. In our experimental results, although multiple buffer pool scheme mitigates the lock contention by up to 46.3%, throughput of DMBS is significantly degraded by up to 50.6% due to increased disk I/O and fsync calls.

  • As online activities have rapidly increased due to recent digital changes and the impact of COVID-19, the importance of large-scale data processing and maintenance is increasing. This study compares the performance of the two main types of databases widely used for data storage and management: Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) and Non-Relational Databases (NoSQL). Specifically, we measured and evaluated the execution time of data insertion, query, and deletion functions using MySQL, a representative example of RDBMS, and Redis, a representative example of NoSQL. The experimental results showed that Redis showed performance about 5.84 times faster in data insertion, 6.61 times faster in query, and 12.33 times faster in deletion than MySQL. These results demonstrate that Redis provides superior performance, especially in environments requiring large-scale data processing and maintenance. Therefore, companies and online service providers can choose NoSQL databases such as Redis to ensure more efficient data management solutions. We hope this study will be an essential reference when selecting a database based on data processing performance.

  • Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is one of the most promising next generation nano-electronic devices which will inherit the throne of CMOS which is the domineering implementation technology of large scale low power digital systems. In late 1990s, the basic operations of the QCA cell were already demonstrated on a hardware implementation. Also, design tools and simulators were developed. Nevertheless, its design technology is not quite ready for ultra large scale designs. This paper proposes a new approach which enables the QCA designs to inherit the verification methodologies and tools of CMOS designs, as well. First, a set of disciplinary rules strictly restrict the cell arrangement not to deviate from the predefined structures but to guarantee the deterministic digital behaviors. After the gate and interconnect structures of the QCA design are identified, the signal integrity requirements including the input path balancing of majority gates, and the prevention of the noise amplification are checked. And then the digital logic is extracted and stored in the OpenAccess common engineering database which provides a connection to a large pool of CMOS design verification tools. Towards validating the proposed approach, we designed a 2-bit QCA adder. The digital logic is extracted, translated into the Verilog net list, and then simulated using a commercial software.

  • This paper presents a Case-Sort method to solve the unit commitment problem using database in electric power systems. The formulation of the unit commitment nay be described as nonlinear mixed integer programming. However, it is hard to optimize a problem with discrete and continuous variables in a large-scale system at the same time. The Case-Sort method is based on the unit[MW]generation cost considered drive hour. Then, this paper shows effectiveness and economical efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
