In the transformer that is used for the contactless power transmission system, the primary and secondary sides are separated structurally unlike general transformers. When the contactless transformer is built, it forms relatively bigger air gap than the general transformer. Thus it is difficult to transfer energy from the primary side input to the secondary side output with high power efficiently because of low coupling coefficient. This paper proposes a contactless transformer using the rectangular type core that maintains high coupling coefficient even when it has relatively large air gap. The performance characteristics of the proposed transformer are compared with the transformer using general EE core to the air gap variation. The proposed contactless system using rectangular type core and dc-dc full bridge converter, and the system using EE core type and dc-dc full bridge converter are respectively implemented and their performance characteristics are verified by the simulation and experiment.
According to the recent design of an HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) power transformer whose capacity is hundreds MVA, the rated current values of the low voltage side are generally over thousands amps. Considering the performance of the recent HTS wires, it is inevitable to use several HTS wires in parallel for large rated current. Lots of stacked HTS wires were fabricated and tested so far, and the results have showed that we have to transpose each wire in order to reduce the AC losses as well as to increase the current capacity. But many development programs about HTS transformers reveal that the transposition of the several wires during the winding process is quite difficult not only in case of the layer windings but also in case of the pancake type ones. So, we need transposed multiple HTS wire which we can handle like single wire or cable for the HTS windings of large capacity power transformer. We fabricated several kinds of samples of multiple HTS wire with transposition to apply it to the HTS windings of power transformer. The electrical characteristics such as critical currents or AC losses are analyzed by experiments in case by case. Finally we present the best design of a multiple HTS wire for power transformer.
AC loss is one of the important parameters in HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) AC devices. Among the HTS AC power devices, the transformer is the essential part in the electrical power system. But unfortunately, the transformer is the worst HTS device concerning AC loss because of very large magnetization loss due to high magnetic field applied to the HTS wire. We calculated the magnetization losses in HTS pancake windings for transformer according to the operating temperature. Two kinds of arrangement of HTS pancake windings were adopted for calculation of AC losses of a shell type transformer, and the analysis results were presented and discussed.
The mold transformers have been widely used in underground substations in large building and have some advantages in comparison to oil-transformer, that is low fire risk, excellent environmental compatibility, compact size and high reliability. In addition, the application of mold transformer for outdoor is possible due to development of epoxy resin. The mold transformer generally has cooling duct between low voltage coil and high voltage coil. A mold transformer made by one body molding method has been developed for small size and low loss, but it needs some cooling method because heat radiation between each winding is difficult. In this paper, the temperature distribution and thermal stress analysis of H class 100kVA pole cast resin transformer for power distribution are investigated by FEM program.
An LCL-type Isolated dc-dc converter operating for constant output voltage is analyzed, including the effect of a high frequency transformer using ac complex circuit approximation. Its solution is derived and is used to obtain the characteristics of the proposed converter. The analyses show through converter modeling, phasor diagram and gain comparison that inclusion of a high frequency transformer results in introduction of magnetizing inductance and leakage inductances at conventional LCL dc-dc converter with ideal transformer. The theoretical and simulation results are presented in case of the wide variations in input voltage and load current in detail. Analysis and simulation results observed that introduction of a transformer in the dc-dc converter had considerable effect on the performance, especially in the case of low output voltage and large load.
Current differential protection relaying with second harmonic restraint is the main protection for large capacity power transformer. PSCAD simulation program is widely used for modeling of dynamic varying transients phenomena. This paper deals with a power transformer model and transients analysis using PSCAD software to develop IED for power transformer. Simulation was carried out using a three phase 40MVA, 154/22.9kV, 60Hz, two-winding transformer with Y-Y connection used in actual fields. The paper analyzed transformer magnetizing inrush, external fault, and internal fault conditions with this model in the time domain. In addition, we performed an analysis in the frequency domain using FFT during several conditions.
The purpose of high frequency transformer in the inverter is to reduce the voltage and current stresses of switch components when it operates at the large conversion ratio. But the loss of transformer is the major contributor in the efficiency of inverter. This paper presents the method of core design to minimize the loss of transformer. The total loss of transformer is minimized by adjusting the effective cross-sectional areas of core. The component ratio of losses are compared by using the finite-element analysis.
In order to detect of insulation problems an early, transformer has to be performed the several tests. The ac current and tan6 of transformer winding insulation were investigated by Schering bridge. Partial discharge(PD) tests are used to evaluate the insulation condition of transformer. The moisture content measurement was conducted using RVM(recovery voltage meter). The RVM test can show that the problem is affecting the paper insulation of transformer. The value of moisture content was 2.3% in main transformer. The insulations of four transformers were judged to be in good condition.

The life of transformer is significantly dependent on the thermal behavior in windings. Many transformer designers have calculated temperature distribution and hot spot point by finite element method(FEM) to analyze winding temperature rise. In this paper, The thermal analysis of pole mount mold transformer with one body molding by duct condition is investigated and the test result of temperature rise is compared with simulation data.
