  • The Ultrasonic motor(USM) has many good characteristics such as high torque at low speed range, large holding torque based upon frictional force, high speed response, flexible free ferns, compactness in size, low magnetic noise and silentness in motion. Because of having low speed rotation, USM is good as an actuator of a small size direct drive (DD) manipulator. The acturators for the DD manipulators must have good controllability on the speed and torque from zero to maximum value continuously. New method was developed for speed and torque control by the phase difference control of the two-phase driving signals of the motor. Then rule adjustable compliant and dumped motion was realized on the output shaft of the motor by PD control of the output shaft angle.

  • This paper proposes an efficient method of implementing the generalized Hough transform (GHT), which has been hindered by an excessive computing load and a large memory requirement. The conventional algorithm requires a parameter space of 4 dimensions in detection a rotated, scaled, and translated object in an input image. Prior to the application of GHT to the input image, the proposed method determines the angle of rotation and the scaling factor of the test image using the proportion of the edge components between the reference image and test image. With the rotation angle and the scaling factor already determined, the parameter spaceis to be reduced to a simple array of 2 dimensions by applying the unit GHT only one time. The experiments with the image of airplanes reveal that both of the computing time and the requires memory size are reduced by 95 percent, without any degradatationof accuracy, compared with the conventional GHT algorithm.

  • A new concept for launching free-fall lifeboats, proposed by Yokohama National University is described in this paper. It has been pointed out that, using the conventional single-skid free-fall system, the potential for dangerous lifeboat motions (in which the lifeboat moves backward or jerks on the surface after entering the water) increases with the fall height of the lifeboat. One of the principal causes of this undesirable motion is vertical rotation of the lifeboat during its restricted fall at the edge of the launching skid. Thus a new "double-skid"launching concept is proposed to effectively eliminate the rotation of the lifeboat at the skid end and to enable the lifeboat to move smoothly after entering the water. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a series of model experiments and numerical simulations is carried out in which two lifeboat models with overall lengths of 1 meter and 6 meters are used. The effects of design parameters such as skid angle and skid height are investigated, and an example of the implementation of this new system at the stern of a large merchant ship is illustrated.

  • When a large ship is advancing in waves, ship undergoes the hydroelastic response, which has influences on structural stability and the fatigue destruction etc. of the ship. Therefore, to predict accurate hydroelastic response, it is necessary to analyze hydroelastic response including fluid-structure interaction. In this research, a ship is divided into many hull elements to calculate the fluid forces and wave exciting forces on each elements using three-dimensional source distribution method. The calculated fluid forces and wave exciting forces are assigned to nodes of hull elements. The neighbor nodes are connected with elastic beam elements. We analyzed hydroelastic responses, and those are formulated by using finite element method. Particularly, to estimate the influence of forward speed on the hydroelastic responses, we use two different methods : Full Hull Rotation Method(FHRM) and Sectional Hull Rotation Method(SHRM).

  • There are so many difficulties of melt bonding mainly applied for hull construction of a aluminum alloy small boat. For resolving this problem, Friction stir welding(FSW) in non-melting solid state welding Process generally is applied in the transport industry. This paper is studied the joining strength characteristics and macrostructure according to dissimilar aluminium 5000/6000 alloy joining for a small boat applied for this FSW technology. It is reported that difference of joining strength in accordance with the direction of rotation in case of friction stir welding between dissimilar metals(Al/Cu, Al/Fe) is also highly large. In this study, Test is carried out by making the specimen according to the direction of rotation of dissimilar aluminium alloy joining.

  • A numerical study was performed on the fluid flow in the melt of the cold model for Czochralski growth system. The fluid flow in the melt of Woods metal with crucible diameter of 20cm was calculated using a three dimensional finite difference method. Since the crucible size is large, fully turbulent model as well as laminar model was used in the calculation. The effects of crucible rotation rate, crystal rotation rate and wall temperature difference on the velocity and temperature distribution were also investigated. For the purpose of verifying the results of calculation, a cold model experiment using Woods metal was also conducted and the velocity distribution in the melt of the model was measured.

  • This paper proposes a new method of retrieving images from large image databases. The method is based on VQ(Vector Quantization) of local texture information at interest points automatically detected in an image. The texture features are extracted by Gabor wavelet filter bank, and rearranged for rotation. These features are classified by VQ and then construct a pattern histogram. Retrievals are performed by just comparing pattern histograms between images. Experimental results have shown the robustness of the proposed method to image rotation, small scale change, noise addition and brightness change and also shown the possibility of the retrieval by a partial image.

  • Three non-ionic and two anioinic spin probes, differing in size and substituent, were synthesized. Their mobility in dried nylon 6 film was investicated by the spin probe technique using electron spin resonance spectrometer. When the size of a spin probe was large and the interaction between the probe molecules and polymer chains existed, the mobility of spin probes decreased. From Arrhenius plots of rotational correlation time, one discontinuity point ($T_d$) was determined. The activation energies for rotation below and above $T_d$ were discussed in terms of the mode of probe rotation. Three spin probes could be viewed as azo dyes having a built-in nitroxide radical. Photolysis of them in dimethylformamide and in nylon 6 film was performed by exposure to 254 nm UV light in the presence of air. It was found that dyes having a built-in nitroxide radical showed better photostability than dyes derived from ${\bata}-naphthol$..

  • Generally, in-plane position of moving object is measured referring to the reference pattern attached to the object. From optical camera to magnetic reluctance probe, there are many ways detecting a variation of the periodical pattern. In this paper, the various operating principles developed for in-plane positioning are reviewed and compared each other. And, a novel method measuring large rotation as well as x, y linear displacements is suggested, including a detailed description of the overall system layout. It is a modified version of the surface encoder, which is a robust digital measuring method. From the surface encoder, the rotation of an object is measured indirectly through a compensated input of optical servo and independently of linear displacements. So, the operating range can be extended simply by enlarging the reference pattern, without magnifying the decoding units.
