Membrane filtration has become firmly established as a primary process for ensuring the purity, safety and efficiency of treatment of water or effluents. Several researches have been performed to develop and design membrane systems in order to increase the accuracy and performance of the processes. In this study, a lattice Boltzmann method for the cake layer has been developed using particle dynamics based on an immersed boundary method and the cake layer formation process on membrane has been numerically simulated. Case studies including various particle sizes were also performed for a microfiltration process. The growth rate of the cake layer thickness and the permeation flow rate along the membranes were predicted. The results of this study agreed well with that of previous experiments. Effects of various particle diameters on the membrane performance were studied. The cake layer of a large particle tended to be growing fast and the permeation flow going down rapidly at the beginning. The layer thickness of a small particle increased constantly and the flow rate was smaller than that of the large particle at the end of simulation time.
Heavy ion particle, represented carbon ion, radiotherapy is currently most advanced radiation therapy technique. Conventional radiation therapy has made remarkable changes over a relatively short period of time and leading various developments such as intensity modulated radiation therapy, 4D radiation therapy, image guided radiation therapy, and high precisional therapy. However, the biological and physical superiority of particle radiation, represented by Bragg peak, can give the maximum dose to tumor and minimal dose to surrounding normal tissues in the treatment of cancers in various areas surrounded by radiation-sensitive normal tissues. However, despite these advantages, there are some limitations and factors to consider. First, there is not enough evidence, such as large-scale randomized, prospective phase III trials, for the clinical application. Secondly, additional studies are needed to establish a very limited number of treatment facilities, uncertainty about the demand for heavy particle treatment, parallel with convetional radiotherapy or indications. In addition, Bragg peak of the heavy particles can greatly reduce the dose to the normal tissues front and behind the tumor compared to the photon or protons. High precision and accuracy are needed for treatment planning and treatment, especially for lungs or livers with large respiratory movements. Currently, the introduction of the heavy particle therapy device is in progress, and therefore, it is expected that more research will be active.
In this paper, particle counting system using a CMOS image sensor is demonstrated. The system utilizes a linear photodetector array as a detection element. Therefore, the particles are detected by large detection region, in contrast to a single detector in conventional particle counting devices, while maintaining the sensitivity. The advantage of proposed system is that particles are detected in a relatively large area without using the particle focusing method. Also, proposed system can be easily integrated with a microfluidic chip by attaching the device underneath the bottom plate of the microfluidic chip. Detection of polystyrene microbeads has been tested at a flow rate of 4.89mm/s. For 21 measurements, proposed system showed an average count error of 7.29% and a standard deviation of 4.74%. Potentially, the proposed system can detect even smaller particles simply by utilizing a higher resolution CMOS image sensor.

Objectives: This study was conducted in order to investigate the diesel exhaust particle(DEP) concentrations in the thirteen parking lots of large shopping complex. Methods: The real-time black carbon(BC) concentration was determined using an Aethalometer, and elemental/organic carbon concentration was determined according to the method of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH) 5040. The particle number concentration(NC), lung deposited surface area concentration(LDSA) and geometric mean diameter(GMD) were determined using a DiSCmini aerosol monitor. Results: The average concentration of BC, EC, OC, NC, LDSA and GMD were $19.1{\mu}g/m^3$, $12.6{\mu}g/m^3$, $51.5{\mu}g/m^3$, $94,000particles/cm^{-3}$, $298{\mu}m^2/cm^{-3}$ and 57 nm in all parking lots, respectively, approximately 3-fold higher than those found in the urban outdoor. The average concentration of BC were $21.3{\mu}g/m^3$ in underground parking lots, 3-fold higher than above parking lots. Conclusions: Therefore, the parking lots at the large shopping complex can be considered a potentially dangerous environment with a high concentration of DEP nanoparticles.

Experimental research on characteristics of particle-laden jet by using a coaxial injector was conducted in order to design fuel and oxidizer injectors of the supercavitation underwater vehicle. $1{\mu}m$ and $42{\mu}m$ particles was simultaneously injected to obtain particle and fluid velocity. Small particles($1{\mu}m$) and large particles represent fluid and fuel characteristics respectively. Small particles, which was processed using PIV algorithms, and one for the large particles processed using PTV algorithms. Fluid phase axial velocity increases according to particle loading ratio increases, and particles are located at the outside of the high vorticity region in a mixing layer of a coaxial injector.
A study on the particle growth in $TEOS/O_2$ plasma was performed, and particle size and its distribution was measured by the electrical aerosol analyzer (EAA), light scattering particle size analyzer and the particle size was also determined by SEM. The effects of process variables such as total gas flow rate, reactor pressure, supplied power and initial reactant concentration on the particle growth were investigated. From the EAA results, the particle size distribution is divided into three groups of the cluster size and the small and large size particles. The particle size distribution measured by the light scattering particle size analyzer becomes bimodal, because the cluster size particles smaller than 20 nm in diameter cannot be detected by the light scattering particle size analyzer. The size of particles measured by the light scattering particle size analyzer is in good agreements with those by the SEM. Also we could understand that the particle formation is very sensitive to the changes of reactor pressure and reactant concentration. As the total gas flow rate increases, the particle size decreases because of the shorter residence time. As the reactor pressure, or the reactant concentration increases, the particle concentration increases and the particles grow more quickly by the faster coagulation between particles.
When the Eulerian-Lagrangian method is used to analyze the particle laden two-phase flow, a large number of particles should be used to obtain statistically meaningful solutions. Then it takes too much time to track the particles and to average the particle properties in the numerical analysis of two-phase flow. The purpose of this paper is to reduce the computation time by means of a set of particle gird separate to the flow grid. Particle motion equation here is the simplified B-B-O equation, which is integrated to get the particle trajectories. Particle turbulent dispersion, wall collision, and wall roughness effects are considered but the two-way coupling effects between gas and particles are neglected. Particle laden 2-D channel flow is solved and it is shown that the computational efficiency is indeed improved by using the current method

To study adiabatic shear band formation of tungsten heavy alloys, 5 prismatic specimens are loaded by high velocity impacts and treated as plane strain problems. Their volume percent of tungsten particles in WHA are 81%, 93% and 97% respectively and for the fixed 81% volume percent, small size particle model, large size particle model, undulated particle models are considered and then, the effects of particle's volume ratio, geometry and size to the formation of shear band are discussed.

Discrete element analysis is used to map various log-normal particle size distributions into measures of the in-sphere pore size distribution. Combinations evaluated range from monosized spheres to include bimodal mixtures and various log-normal distributions. The latter proves most useful in providing a mapping of one distribution into the other (knowing the particle size distribution we want to predict the pore size distribution). Such metrics show predictions where the presence of large pores is anticipated that need to be avoided to ensure high sintered properties.

With the onset of the big data age, data is growing exponentially, and the issue of how to optimize large-scale data processing is especially significant. Large-scale global optimization (LSGO) is a research topic with great interest in academia and industry. Spark is a popular cloud computing framework that can cluster large-scale data, and it can effectively support the functions of iterative calculation through resilient distributed datasets (RDD). In this paper, we propose a hybrid mechanism of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and differential evolution (DE) algorithms based on Spark (SparkPSODE). The SparkPSODE algorithm is a parallel algorithm, in which the RDD and island models are employed. The island model is used to divide the global population into several subpopulations, which are applied to reduce the computational time by corresponding to RDD's partitions. To preserve population diversity and avoid premature convergence, the evolutionary strategy of DE is integrated into SparkPSODE. Finally, SparkPSODE is conducted on a set of benchmark problems on LSGO and show that, in comparison with several algorithms, the proposed SparkPSODE algorithm obtains better optimization performance through experimental results.
