It had found that, as a result of cross-hole tonic logging test, concrete was not filled partially within the bottom 2.0 m of the large diameter (Ø= 2,500mm) rock socketed pile, MP20-P11(socket diameter (Ø= 2,200mm), which was a pile among piles group supporting a pier of Kwangan Grand Bridge. The pile was repaired by the combined cement grout injected through the pipes for the cross-hole sonic logging test and the bore holes for core samples. A month after the cement grouting, repairing was checked by coring and cross-hole sonic logging then 3 times of grouting and 2 times of coring were, in turns, peformed, then repairing was completed successfully. The vertical compressive capacity of the repaired large diameter socketed pile was evaluated by several formulas and software ROCKET, and was more conservative than design load (1,882 ton) of MP20-P11. It is expected that, in the case of the battered socketed piles, it could be more reasonable to analyze the behaviors of a battered pile using 3-D model. A 3-D analysis will be peformed in the future study.
Pile foundation is a typical form of bridge foundation and viaduct, and large-diameter rock-socketed piles are typically adopted in bridges with long span or high piers. To investigate the effect of a mountain slope with a deep overburden layer on the bearing characteristics of large-diameter rock-socketed piles, four centrifuge model tests of single piles on different slopes (0°, 15°, 30° and 45°) were carried out to investigate the effect of slope on the bearing characteristics of piles. In addition, three pile group tests with different slope (0°, 30° and 45°) were also performed to explore the effect of slope on the bearing characteristics of the pile group. The results of the single pile tests indicate that the slope with a deep overburden layer not only accelerates the drag force of the pile with the increasing slope, but also causes the bending moment to move down owing to the increase in the unsymmetrical pressure around the pile. As the slope increases from 0° to 45°, the drag force of the pile is significantly enlarged and the axial force of the pile reduces to beyond 12%. The position of the maximum bending moment of the pile shifts downward, while the magnitude becomes larger. Meanwhile, the slope results in the reduction in the shaft resistance of the pile, and the maximum value at the front side of the pile is 3.98% less than at its rear side at a 45° slope. The load-sharing ratio of the tip resistance of the pile is increased from 5.49% to 12.02%. The results of the pile group tests show that the increase in the slope enhances the uneven distribution of the pile top reaction and yields a larger bending moment and different settlements on the pile cap, which might cause safety issues to bridge structures.
A ground-loop heat exchanger for the ground source heat pump system is the core equipment determining the thermal performance and initial cost of the system. The size and performance of the heat exchanger is highly dependent on the ground thermal properties - the ground effective thermal conductivity, the borehole thermal resistance and the undisturbed ground temperature. Nowadays, precast concrete piles using steel reinforced precast concrete piles - energy piles - are used to reduce the installing cost of the ground-loop heat exchanger. We were carried out some tests to investigate the effects of some parameters such as borehole length, grouting materials and U-tube configuration of the energy piles. 4 concrete piles, each measuring $250mm{\sim}400mm$ in diameter and approx. 10m in length, and rigged with single spiral and 3 U-tube loop of $16mm{\times}2.3mm$ PB piping. The thermal response tests were conducted using a testing device for 4-different ground-loop heat exchangers. During the heating period, the energy piles absorb the heat of 0.89kW to 1.37kW.
For the construction of 4.8km long Multi-Purpose Jamuna Bridge in Bangladesh, 2 or 3 large diameter open-ended steel pipe piles were used for the foundation of piers. A total of 123 piles were driven for 50 piers and 2 test piles from the river bed through the normally-consolidated upper sand layer and rested n top of gravel layer. Two types of piles, having 3.15 or 2.50m diameter and variable wall thickness in the range of 40 to 60mm, were driven to the depths of 69 to 74m with the rake of 6:1 by connecting 2 or 3 pieces of short piles. Dynamic pile tests were performed on 24 selected piles during pile driving and soil plug length inside the pile was also measured after driving of each short section. These piles were plugged with soil to, though slightly affected by pile diameters, about 75% of total length of pile driven. Active plug at the tip of pile contributed substantial amount of inner skin friction to the total capacity. Piles soon after driving showed a skin-friction dominant pile behaviour, tat is, 90% of total capacity being developed by skin resistance. Quakes values and Smith damping factors were almost constant regardless of pile diameters. This result reflects the influence of uniform soil condition at the site.
Hong Kong is a renowned small city with densely placed skyscrapers. It is no surprise that heavy duty or even mega foundations are built over the years to support these structures. To cope with the fast construction pace, several heavy deep foundation types have been widely adopted with some prescribed design rules. This Paper has selected two commonly adopted but distinctive foundation types, namely large diameter bored piles and percussive steel H-piles to illustrate the special design and construction considerations related to these pile types in related to local context. The supervision requirement in related to foundation works for which again may be unique in Hong Kong will also be highlighted. A case history is also discussed in the later part of the Paper to illustrate the application of one of these foundations and to highlight the importance of considering foundation design and basement excavation method in a holistic manner.
Cast in situ and grouted concrete helical piles with 150-200 mm diameter half cylindrical ribs have become an economical and effective choice in Shanghai, China for uplift piles in deep soft soils. Though this type of pile has been successful used in practice, the reinforcing mechanism and the contribution of the ribs to the total resistance is not clear, and there is no clear guideline for the design of such piles. To study the inclusion of ribs to the contribution of shear resistance, the shear behaviour between silty sand and concrete slabs with parallel ribs at different spacing and angles were tested in a large direct shear box ($600mm{\times}400mm{\times}200mm$). The front panels of the shear box are detachable to observe the soil deformation after the test. The tests were modelled with three-dimensional finite element method in ABAQUS. It was found that, passive zones can be developed ahead of the ribs to form undulated failure surfaces. The shear resistance and failure mode are affected by the ratio of rib spacing to rib diameter. Based on the shape and continuity of the failure zones at the interface, the failure modes at the interface can be classified as "punching", "local" or "general" shear failure respectively. With the inclusion of the ribs, the pull out resistance can increase up to 17%. The optimum rib spacing to rib diameter ratio was found to be around 7 based on the observed experimental results and the numerical modelling.

Recently, as large structures, which should support large design loads have been constructed, the study on the large diameter composite pile becomes necessary. The large diameter composite pile has the diameter over 700mm and consists of two parts of the upper steel pipe pile and the lower PHC pile by a mechanical joint. In this research, to analyze the bearing capacity and the material strength of the composite pile, three dimensional numerical analyses were performed. First, the numerical modeling method was verified by comparing the calculated load-movement curves of the pile with those of the field pile load tests. Then, a total of twelve analyses were performed by varying pile diameter and loading direction for three pile types of PHC, steel pipe and composite piles. The results showed that the vertical and the horizontal load-movement curves of the composite pile were identical with those of the steel pipe pile and the horizontal material strength of the composite pile was 60-80% larger than that of the PHC pile.
This paper presents the analysis of plugging effect especially when the large diameter steel pipe pile was installed by considering driveability (BPM, blow per meter). The Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) technique was used to simulate the driving of open-ended piles into soil. To consider the driveability, the applied driving energy for each pile was obtained from the analysis results by using the wave equation. The parametric studies were performed for different pile diameters, penetration depths of pile, soil elastic modulus and BPM. It was found that the SPI is almost constant with increasing both the pile diameter and the required driving energy. It is also found that the plugging effect increases with increasing the pile length, resulting in the increase of lateral earth pressure. Based on this study the apparent magnitude and distribution of the lateral earth pressure is proposed for inside portion mobilizing soil plug.

In this test, two separated oil jacks were placed at bottom of drilled shaft(D = 1,500mm, L = 33m), and maximum upward and downward load of 1,250 tonf was applied. Also, the deformable rod sensors were placed on each level, and axial strains at each level were measured. Because the side skin friction and the end bearing could be measured separately in the Osterberg type pile load test, this test might be more economical and more applicable than a conventional static pile load test. Thus, if this Osterberg type pile load test could be established during design stage, construction cost might be reduced and its application for large diameter pile could be enhance greatly.
