The demands of the large scale machine tools, for instance, such as planomiller, turning machine, boring machine, NC machine, have been gradually increased in recent years. As the performances of machine tools and/or cutting tools are advanced, it is possible to perform high-speed and high-precision cutting works. The effective treatment of wet chip, which is discharged from cutting works, becomes very important problems. Therefore, this study is forced on the design of large scale machine tools using CATIA V5R18 and analysis of cutter, which is considered as essential equipment in large scale machine tools, using MSC.Nastran & MSC.Patran. Especially, the relations between tolerated load of cutter, driving horse power and rpm of driving shaft in chip processing system are investigated through analysis. As the results, the reliability of design could be improved by evaluating simulated numerical values, it showed that tolerated loads of supported part and edged part of cutter are 87,000N and 14,450N, respectively.
Recently, the demands of the large scale machine tools gradually increase to machine the large parts, such as large scale crankshaft, yaw and pitch bearings for the wind power generator and the vehicle or aircraft components. But the high technology is necessary in order to develop the huge machine tools. Furthermore, the global market of it has been monopolized by a few companies. So, we need to develop the large scale machine tools and study its core technology to rush into the increasing market. In this study, we carried out the researches for the important core technology of a multi-tasking, machine tool; a large scale 5-axis machine tool of gantry type for multi-task machining. This study is focused on the design of large size gantry type multi-axis machine. In the case of large size of machine the cross rail deflection in the X-axis is significant. To reduce the deflection due to the eccentric spindle head, a special hollow type design in the cross rail with outside ram is adapted in this study. Also, the Zig-Zag motion in the Y-axis is inevitable with the gantry geometry, which is by the un-balancing, different motion at the left and the right columns moving. We tried to reduce the influence of Zig-Zag motion using FEM with different loading conditions at the left and the right side column.
A multi-tasking machine tool for large scale marine engine crankshafts has been developed together with design technologies for its special devices. Since work pieces, that is, crankshafts to be machined are big and heavy; weight of over 100 tons, length of 10 m long, and diameter of over 3.5 m, several special purpose core devices are necessarily developed such as PTD (Pin Turning Device) for machining eccentric pin parts, face place and steady rest for chucking and resting heavy work pieces. PTD is a unique special purpose device of open-and-close ring typed structure equipped with revolving ring spindle for machining eccentric pins apart from journal. In order to achieve high rigidity of the machine tool, structural design optimization using TMSA (Taguch Method based Sequential Algorithm) has been completed with FEM structural analysis, and a hydrostatic bearing system for the PTD has been developed with theoretical hydrostatic analysis.
In this study, three types of large scale multi-tasking machine tools together with core technologies involved have been developed and introduced; a multi-tasking machine tool for large scale marine engine crankshafts, a multi-tasking vertical lathe for windmill parts, and a large scale 5-axis machine tool of gantry type. Several special purpose devices has been necessarily developed for the purpose of handling and machining big and heavy workpieces accurately, such as PTD (Pin Turning Device) with revolving ring spindle for machining eccentric crankshaft pins, hydrostatic rotary table and steady rest for supporting and resting heavy workpieces, and 2-axis automatic swiveling head for high-quality free surface machining. Core technologies have been also developed and adopted on their detail design stage; 1) structural design optimization with FEM structural analysis, 2) theoretical hydrostatic analysis for the PTD and rotary table bearings, 3) box-in-box type cross-rail and octagonal ram design to secure machine rigidity and accuracy, 4) constant spindle rpm control against gravitational torque due to unbalanced workpiece.
Mirror surface finish of Si-wafers has been achieved by rotary in-feed machining with cup-type wheels in ELID grinding. But the diameter of the workpiece is limited with the diameter of the grinding wheel in the in-feed machining method. In this study, some finding experiments by the rotary surface grinding machine with straight type wheels were conducted, by which the possible grinding area of the workpiece is independent of the diameter of the wheels. For the purpose of investigating the grinding characteristics of large scale diametrical silicon wafer, grinding conditions such as rotation speed of grinding wheels and revolution of workpieces are varied, and grinding machine used in this experiment is rotary type surface grinding m/c equipment with an ELID unit. The surface ground using the SD8000 wheels showed that mirror like surface roughness can be attained near 2~6 nm in Ra.

Background: We described a novel multi-step retinal fundus image reading system for providing high-quality large data for machine learning algorithms, and assessed the grader variability in the large-scale dataset generated with this system. Methods: A 5-step retinal fundus image reading tool was developed that rates image quality, presence of abnormality, findings with location information, diagnoses, and clinical significance. Each image was evaluated by 3 different graders. Agreements among graders for each decision were evaluated. Results: The 234,242 readings of 79,458 images were collected from 55 licensed ophthalmologists during 6 months. The 34,364 images were graded as abnormal by at-least one rater. Of these, all three raters agreed in 46.6% in abnormality, while 69.9% of the images were rated as abnormal by two or more raters. Agreement rate of at-least two raters on a certain finding was 26.7%-65.2%, and complete agreement rate of all-three raters was 5.7%-43.3%. As for diagnoses, agreement of at-least two raters was 35.6%-65.6%, and complete agreement rate was 11.0%-40.0%. Agreement of findings and diagnoses were higher when restricted to images with prior complete agreement on abnormality. Retinal/glaucoma specialists showed higher agreements on findings and diagnoses of their corresponding subspecialties. Conclusion: This novel reading tool for retinal fundus images generated a large-scale dataset with high level of information, which can be utilized in future development of machine learning-based algorithms for automated identification of abnormal conditions and clinical decision supporting system. These results emphasize the importance of addressing grader variability in algorithm developments.
To improve the productivity of NC drilling machine the tool path should be minimized. This paper describes a new heuristic practical algorithm to produce tool path for PCB drilling processes with a large scale and its experimental results are shown.
In recent years, research to machine large-surface micro-features has become important because of the light guide panel of a large-scale liquid crystal display and the bipolar plate of a high-capacity proton exchange membrane fuel cell. In this study, in order to realize the systematic design technology and performance improvements of an ultra-precision machine for machining the large-surface micro-features, a structural characteristic analysis was performed using its virtual prototype. The prototype consisted of gantry-type frame, hydrostatic feed mechanisms, linear motors, brushless DC servo motor, counterbalance mechanism, and so on. The loop stiffness was estimated from the relative displacement between the tool post and C-axis table, which was caused by a cutting force. Especially, the causes of structural stiffness deterioration were identified through the structural deformation analysis of sub-models.

Excavation by TBM can be characterized by a rock-machine interaction during the cutting process on a small scale, but on a large scale the interaction between the rock mass and TBM becomes very significant. For the planning and evaluation of TBM tunnelling it needs to understand rock fracture mechanism by a cutter or cutters on a small scale, and to estimate penetration rate, advance rate and utilization on a large scale. In this study rock chipping mechanism due to cutter-penetration is analysed by numerical simulation, showing that rock chipping is mainly occurred by tensile failure. Also, through the analysis of factors that affect on TBM procedures in various assessment systems, it is determined that the key elements that should be considered in the planning and evaluation of TBM tunnelling are classified into rock properties, the geological structures and properties of rock mass, and the structural and functional specifications of the machine. The user-friendly assessment tool is developed, so that penetration rate, advance rate and TBM utilization are evaluated from various input data. The tool developed in this study can be applied to a practical TBM tunnelling by understanding TBM tunnelling procedures.
