  • The accurate assessment of hull-appendage interaction in the early design stage is important to control the inflow to the propeller plane, which can cause undesirable hydrodynamic effects in terms of cavitation phenomenon. This paper describes a numerical analysis for the flow around a fully appended surface ship model for which KRISO has carried out a model test in the Large Cavitation Tunnel(LCT). This numerical study was performed with the LCT model test in a complementary manner for a good reproduction of the wake distribution of surface ships. A second order accurate finite volume method provided by a commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) program was used to solve the governing Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations, where the SST $k-{\omega}$ model was used for turbulence closure. The numerical results were compared to available LCT experimental data for validation. The calculations gave good predictions for the boundary layer profiles on the walls of the empty cavitation tunnel and the wake at the propeller plane of the fully appended hull model in the LCT.

  • The objective of the present study is to analyze the results of the trial-test for the full-scale driving pump, which is arranged in the LCT (Large Cavitation Tunnel). Firstly, the reasons of selecting the final design pump are introduced in terms of the performance analysis in model tests. The trial-test items for the full-scale driving pump are measurements of output current/voltage at the inverter of the main motor and the flow velocity in the LCT test section. The test results show the increase in flow rate of about 10.7% and the decrease in pump head of about 26%, compared with those of final design-pump specification. The motor power has the margin of about 22%. The performance analysis for the full-scale pump is conducted using the commercial code (CFX-10). The delivered power calculated with CFX-10 shows good agreement with that extracted from the full-scale pump test. It is found that CFX-10 is useful to analyze a full-scale pump.

  • In order to investigate cavitation performance for the azimuth thruster in Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT), the cavitation test apparatus was designed and manufactured. Generally the model scale is determined by the pod dynamometer with about 70mm diameter. Recently as ships with azimuth thruster have become bigger, the problem of the model ship installation was occurred. The model ship with pod dynamometer couldn't be installed in the LCT test section. The cavitation test apparatus and technique which can conduct the cavitation test without pod dynamometer were developed. The cavitation tests were conducted in torque identity method instead of thrust identity method. The target ship with azimuth thruster is 18K LNG bunkering vessel. As the full-scale ship test was conducted, the model cavitation tests were conducted at the same operating conditions. The fluctuating pressure levels of the full-scale ship were compared to those of the model tests. Another model cavitation test was conducted in the foreign institute and the cavitation observation results were compared to those of LCT. Through the comparison with the existing results, it is thought that the cavitation test for the azimuth thruster can be conducted in torque identity method.

  • The development of an azimuth thruster which has the function of dynamic positioning and propulsion has been greatly required as the demand of vehicles with it increases. To develop or design a reliable azimuth thruster, it is appropriate that the performance and cavitation observation tests should be conducted in the regime of high Reynolds number. In the present study, to satisfy high Reynolds number condition new dynamometer for a large azimuth thruster is manufactured and arranged in the test section of the Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT). The test method composed of the open water and the cavitation observation tests is established successfully in LCT, considering the thruster design.

  • In order to investigate propulsion efficiency and cavitation characteristics for expanded area ratio variation of the 8800TEU class container propeller, a series of performance tests were conducted at Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT) and Towing Tank (TT) in KRISO. The cavitation test of the existing propellers (KP1029 & KP1030) was conducted using FRP model ship in LCT. On the basis of LCT test results, it was required to design propeller with better propulsion efficiency and cavitation performance. Two propellers (KP1171 & KP1172) with decreased expanded area ratio were designed on the basis of KP1029 propeller. The new design propellers showed higher efficiency than KP1029 and reasonable cavitation performance. In the future, they will be applied as the standard propeller for the propeller design of the large container ship. Through the performance test and prediction results for the new design propellers, it is thought that high-load propeller with better propulsion efficiency and cavitation performance will be developed constantly.

  • In order to study correlation of the propeller cavitation performance between a full-scale ship and a model ship for the MR Tanker, the full-scale ship and the model tests were conducted. The full-scale ship test is composed of cavitation observation, pressure fluctuation and noise measurements, which are conducted using 2 observation windows and 8 pressure transducers installed inside the full-scale ship above the propeller. The model test in the Large Cavitation Tunnel(LCT) was conducted at the same conditions as that of the full-scale ship and its results are compared with those of the full-scale ship. Through the model-ship correlation analysis, it is considered that the experimental technique for the MR Tanker class ship was verified in LCT.

  • In order to study the self-propulsion test and analysis techniques for the submerged body in Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT). DARPA Suboff, a submarine model publicly available was manufactured. The resistance results of DARPA Suboff was acquired from the LCT tests and compared with those of DTRC. After the wall blockage correction, the resistance results of LCT were in good agreement with those of DTRC. On the basis of the resistance results of LCT, the self-propulsion tests were conducted in LCT. The test objective was to get the full-scale propeller operating conditions for the propeller cavitation and noise tests. The test results of DARPA Suboff were analyzed in a way similar to the analysis techniques of those of the Towing Tank (TT). Another submerged body, for which self-propulsion tests were conducted in TT, was selected for results verification. The results of LCT were in good agreement with those of TT. On the basis of the present study, it is thought that the operating conditions for the full-scale submerged body can be drawn through LCT tests.

  • In order to investigate the influence of thru holes near leading edge of model propeller on cavitation behavior, a model propeller with thru holes was manufactured and tested at Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT). The pressure distribution around the thru hole on propeller blade was numerically calculated to help understand the local flow characteristics related to cavitation behavior. The model propeller is a five bladed propeller which has 2 blades with thru holes and 3 blades with smooth surface. The cavitation observation tests were conducted at angles of $0^{\circ}$ & $6^{\circ}$ using an inclined-shaft dynamometer in LCT. There are big difference on the suction side cavitation behavior each other due to the existence of thru hole. While the blades with thou holes start generation of the sheet cavitation from the leading edge on the suction side, the blades with smooth surface generate the cloud cavitation from the mid-chord. Cavitation on the blades with thru holes shows more similar behavior to those of the full-scale propeller of which the pipe line for air injection is closed. The numerical analysis result shows that the sharp pressure drop occurs around thru holes on the blade. Consequently, the thru hole around leading edge stimulates the cavitation occurrence and stabilizes the cavitation behavior. Based on these results, the effect of thru holes on propeller cavitation behavior behind a model ship should be studied in the future.

  • In order to study the resistance test technique for the submerged body in Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT), DARPA Suboff, submarine model publicly available was manufactured. DTRC released the resistance test data of DARPA Suboff conducted at ship speeds up to 18.0 knots in high-speed towing tank in 1990. As LCT is considered restricted waterways with walls, the resistance test results must be corrected with three wall blockage effects called buoyancy effect, solid blockage effect and wake blockage effect. Before correction, the resistance of LCT was 16~20 % higher than that of DTRC. After correction, the resistance and the resistance coefficients were compared with those of DTRC. The corrected resistance of LCT shows good agreement with that of DTRC. The residual resistance coefficient shows the difference according to the calculation method of buoyancy and frictional resistance coefficient. This paper suggests the best way for the calculation of residual resistance coefficient, On the basis of the present study, it is thought that the operating conditions for the propeller cavitation and noise tests can be drawn through LCT tests.

  • In order to investigate force and cavitation characteristics for the flat & twisted rudders in the Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT), the rudder dynamometer was designed and manufactured. The measuring capacities of lift, drag and moment are ±1000 N, ±2000 N, and ±150 N-m, respectively. The present dynamometer uses the actuator with a harmonic drive to control the rudder angle without backlash. As the target ship is a military ship with twin shaft, each dynamometer was installed above the port & starboard rudders. After the installation of the model ship with all appendages, the model test composed of rudder force measurement and cavitation observation was conducted for the existing flat rudder & the designed twisted rudder. While the flat rudder showed the big difference of lift & moment between port & starboard, the twisted rudder presented a similar trend. The cavitation of the twisted rudder showed better characteristics than that of the flat rudder. Another set of model tests were conducted to investigate rudder performance by the change of the design propeller. There was little difference in rudder performance for the design propellers with slight geometric change. Through the model test, the characteristics of the flat & twisted rudders were grasped. On the basis of the present study, it is thought that the rudder with better performance would be developed.
