  • Characteristics of the weld defect, such as a blowhole and a pit in lap-jointed fillet Co₂ welds of Zn-coated steel sheet were studied in order to make clear the sequence of the blowhole formation during welding. Main conclusions obtained are as follows: 1) Blowhole, wormhole and pit were found in fillet welds, although the optimum welding condition of 200A-23V-100cm/min was applied. 2) Zn was only detected at the solidification boundary at the early stage of the blowhole formation. 3) Most of the blowholes was started to form at lap-joint by the Zn vapor. With increasing of the Zn vapor and its pressure, the blowhole was develope to th bed surface until the completion of weld solidification. 4) The behavior of the blowhole in growth was similar to that of the columnar dendrite during welding.

  • Today, implementation of the defect detection in laser welding has been researched for a long time, but most studies have been made around thin plate within $1{\sim}3mm^t$. Therefore, this study was measured and analyzed light emission signals of the induced plasma in $CO_2$ laser lap welding of $6mm^t$ Zn primer-coated steel, and based on this analysis, research made an investigation into possibility of monitoring in thick plate welding. It was been analyzing the measured signals by RMS and FFT processing, as a results, we were able to confirm definite difference of two signals between humping bead and sound bead. Thus, possibility of real time monitoring in $CO_2$ laser lap welding verified experimentally.

  • Hastelloy C-276 composed of Cr, Mo, and Ni is a versatile, corrosion-resistant alloy with numerous industrial applications including its use in nuclear reactors, general chemical plants, and as a superconducting base material. Of especial significance, it can be used as a thin-sheet type whereby lap-joint welding is occasionally necessary. The main welding problems for thin-sheet metals are deformation and burn-through from an excessive heat input. Laser welding can minimize these problems because it has a high energy density and low heat effect on the base material. In this study, the laser-welding characteristics of lap-joint Hastelloy C-276 sheet metal were determined. The criteria of the laser-welding variables were chosen using a heat-conduction analysis, and the optimal welding parameters were selected by experimenting with an Nd:YAG laser.

  • Since stainless steel plates have good mechanical properties, weldability, appearance and resistance of corrosion, these are traditionally used for vehicles such as the bus and the train. And they are mainly fabricated by spot welding. But fatigue strength of their spot welded joint is considerably influenced by welding conditions as well as geometrical factors. Thus a reasonable and systematic criterion for long life design of spot welded body structure must be established. In this report, strain energy density was analyzed by using 3-dimensional finite element model about the IB-type spot welded lap joint under tension-shear load. Fatigue tests were conducted on them having various thickness, joint angle, lapped length and width. From their results, it was found that fatigue strength of the IB-type spot welded lap joints could be effectively and systematically rearranged by strain energy density at the edge of nugget.

  • The butt and the lap welding by friction stir welding performs with $2mm^t$ 1050 aluminum alloy sheet. This paper shows behaviors of property such as vickers hardness, yielding and ultimate stresses, and macro structures for weld zone cross section of the butt and the lap jointed specimens. It is also carried out making comparison with maximum loads, stress-strain diagrams, and deformation after the guided bending test and fracture behaviors between the butt and the lap jointed specimens. It is found that the weldability of the butt jointed specimen is better than that of the lap jointed specimen.

  • Stress distribution and deformation on the CT-type(Cross Tension type) spot welded lap joint subjected to out of plane tensile load were investigated by finite element method. Using the maximum principal stresses at the nugget edge obtained by FEM analysis, evaluated the fatigue strength of the CT-type spot welded lap joints having various dimensions and materials. and also, the influence of the geometrical parameters of CT-type spot welded lap joints on stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. thus, in this paper, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curve were obtained by fatigue tests. Using these results, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curve were systematically rearranged in the $\Delta\sigma-N_f$ relation with the hot spot stresses at the CT-type spot welded lab joints. It was found that the proposed $\Delta\sigma-N_f$ relation could provide a more reasonable fatigue design criterion for the CT-type spot welded lap joints.

  • This research is conducted to investigate weldability characteristics with various welding conditions on the 4 lap spot welded joint of structural steel sheets in automobile. The relationship between the tensile-shear strength and the indentation depth has been investigated to evaluate the weldability and the optimum welding conditions. The welding current and the welding time have a greatly affect to the tensile-shear strength compared to the electrode force. It was found that the indentation depth has a relatively close relationship with the expulsion occurrence. The optimum welding conditions were proposed for the 4 lap spot welded joint.

  • Welding process monitoring is advantageous for maintaining weld quality and numerous sensing techniques have been developed for laser welding. Coaxial image monitoring enables direct monitoring of the weld pool shape and keyhole behavior, but requires the complex optical system and the image processing technique. In this study, we coaxially acquired the weld pool images during laser lap welding by using the camera and special illumination. The welding characteristics - pool width and length, keyhole shape, etc - were extracted by using image processing and the relationship between these characteristics and the penetration depth were investigated.
