  • Donald Trump, the $45^{th}$ president of the United States, has revived the 'English Only' policy since the beginning of his presidential campaign. The monolingualism not only underscores his extremely conservative ideas, but it also reflects the nativist tendency that prevents the demographic and cultural transformation of the US, which is accelerated by globalization and transnational migration. In particular, Donald Trump tries to reconfirm the mainstream American culture that is now thought to have been threatened by Hispanization and the growing number of Spanish speakers. This paper examines the effects of "code-switching" and the possibility of a bilingual community by contrasting Donald Trump with Gloria $Anzald{\acute{u}}a$, one of the representative Latina writers who created a "border language." Borderlands/La Frontera (1987) includes Spanish glossaries and expressions to represent her bilingual realities, while attempting to translate from English to Spanish, and vice versa. However, the text occasionally demonstrates the impossibility of translation. In doing so, $Anzald{\acute{u}}a$ indirectly states that it is indispensable to present both languages at the stage; she also invites monolingual readers to make more efforts to learn and better understand the Other's language. A "border language" she attempts to embody throughout the text is created in the process of encounters, conflicts, and negotiations among languages of different ethnicities, classes and generations. It does not signify an established form: rather it appears as a constantly transforming language, which can provide us with new perspectives and an alternative way of communication beyond monolingualism.

By analyzing the drama , 277 significant vocabularies were extracted from the drama based on vocabulary actually used. Among these, 124 idiomatic expressions were extracted after excluding overlapping expressions. Idiomatic expressions extracted in this way were classified based on vocabulary used more than 2 times. In addition, in order to select idiomatic expressions suitable for the level of the learners, 46 final expressions for Korean language education were selected considering the difficulty of vocabulary. Lastly, when the materials selected in the drama were used for education, the precautions for teaching and learning, and the direction of education on idiomatic language were classified into elementary, intermediate, and advanced grades and presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand in detail the development of infants in the 18-24-month period when language develops the most, and to prepare new standards for developmental evaluation that can promote appropriate intervention design at an early time. We divided sub-items such as screening tests and standardized test tools to know the language development ability indicators of infants aged 18-24 months were divided into syntax/phonology, meaning, and speech, and each question was classified and a checklist was made on a five-point scale to conduct a survey on parents with infants aged 18-24 months. Low sensitivity to screening of infants with language delays in nationally implemented infant health checkups, and domestic test tools are standardized for at least six to as many as 10 years, which is always possible in questionnaires related to acceptance and expression, with many reports from parents or teachers. The proportion of "wow" and "started to do" was more than 50-60%. Based on the results of this study, it is hoped that new standards for developmental evaluation will be developed to promote the design of appropriate interventions in detail at a short time.

  • This study aimed at identifying the effectiveness and preference orientation of an social integration policy for rural married immigrant women according to eight life areas. For this purpose was surveyed non-multicultural residents and multicultural couples. By analysis, frist, the assimilation orientation as an model of integration policy for the women was preferred most highly at the life language area by every respondent. The multiculturalism orientation was preferred most highly at the private area such as dietary-life culture. Second, ANOVA analysis showed that the positive effectiveness on the language policy are evaluated most highly by the respondent having assimilation preference orientation. And the positive effectiveness on dietary-life culture policy are evaluated most highly by the respondent having multiculturalism orientation. Third, positive effectiveness level of the policy estimated by the resident was lower than it of multicultural couple significantly. In conclusion, based on results of this study, it can be seen as on that point preference orientation of integration policy for the women, the domain specificity is present in the attitude of the multicultural couple and resident. Therefore it suspect that integration policy for the women should be considered differently according to life sphere.

  • In this paper, through conducting a survey from 547 male and female high school students in Busan, we found their favorite computer games are about five and the highest linguistic problem in on-line computer games was vulgar languages. Most of respondents thought that the vulgar languages on the on-line games were serious and said that we have experienced the vulgar languages before high school. Therefore, in this paper, we suggest it is necessary to prepare a countermeasure system about adolescents' vulgar languages on the on-line games and for adolescents to take etiquette lessons on the on-line games from either the primary school or before then.

  • This paper examines the concept of "tradition" for Indigenous Peoples as a construct of reality developed through the lens of Western scholarship and American Indian perspectives. The resulting notions of American Indian tradition constructed by a Western point of view, has been incorporated into the thinking of Western peoples as well as those of American Indians. Possible reasons for this include the lasting effects of colonialism and current mass media and the description of cultural "others" through the Western sciences of Anthropology and Musicology. A definition of what is valid or important in defining "traditional culture" for members of an Indigenous community may utilize significantly different measures than those of Western scholars. In order to illustrate this, the author uses two treatises focusing on the Indigenous American Indian cultures of communities in Eastern North America incorporating Indigenous points of view. One of these two books provides a focus on connections between language and culture and the other on ethnomusicology. From both of these perspectives, traditional identity is seen as continuing in the present day through persistent perceptions of reality, linked to community social performance. These perceptions and their accompanying indexes to tradition are still present despite the disappearance of or frequent changes in the surface forms of both language and manufactured cultural items. The emphasis on "legitimate" or "real" tradition is tied to performance within an ongoing cultural community rather than to Western constructions of what is real found in past descriptions of cultures. An alternative view of "valid" tradition and its relationship to Indigenous identity, needs to incorporate Indigenous perspectives rather than depend on constructions developed using non-Indigenous Western frameworks.

  • This study explores evaluative linguistic expressions in news reporting about the 2016 general election outcome in Korean newspapers. In particular, we have examined the evaluative linguistic expressions quoted from the three Western news media -New York Times, Washington Post, and BBC, both quantitatively and qualitatively in Korean news stories in order to know how journalists frame the news stories to persuade news consumers to accept their ideologies. This is based on the assumption that quotation can be a tool in conveying ideologies to news consumers (van Dijk, 1988, Jullian, 2011). To achieve this purpose, we selected ten Korean newspapers which included quotations from the news stories of the three Western media and then analyzed the quoted expressions quantitatively and qualitatively. For a qualitative analysis, evaluative linguistic expressions were analyzed to examine the journalistic stances of the Western news stories, following Martin's (2003) appraisal theory. For a quantitative analysis, a word frequency analysis was conducted to figure out the ratio of quoted words to the whole news texts in Korean newspapers. As a result, it was found that the news stories of BBC and Washington Post were more frequently quoted than that of New York Times when journalists conveyed neutral or positive attitude to the election outcome, thus confirming that evaluative linguistic expressions were functionally employed to convey journalists' ideologies or stances to news readers.

  • Purpose : The aim of this study was from data collection to item development in the first study before developing a valid and reliable instrument reflecting Korean's own language expression and culture. Methods : The fist survey was 140 osteoarthritis(OA) patients in 2 Cites was studied from November to December 2009. Open-ended questionnaire was decided 39 items from the first open survey. Questionnaire on the Korean Osteoarthritis Impact Measurement Scale(KAIMS) was recruited 2 professors and 5 physical therapists. Second survey was applied to 133 OA patients. Results : OA patients's average age${\pm}$standard deviation was $66.08{\pm}11.10$ years. The internal consistency reliability of 3 items. As estimated by Cronbach's alpha coefficient(${\alpha}$), was high(range, 0.86~0.96). 0.43~0.91 ${\alpha}$ coefficient for the internal consistency reliability of item-each scale was also high. However, item-discriminant validity on 3 items was low(${\alpha}$, 0.92~0.97). The construct validity by factor analysis was a little low. Conclusion : This study revealed that we confirmed a generation for 39 items on KAIMS reflecting Korean's own language expression and culture. Also, those of reliability were a little high. And, we will have to study the last instrument development (3rd study) by more subjects in the future.
