The Dark Side of TESOL: The Hidden Costs of the Consumption of English

  • Based on case studies from Japan and South Korea, this review paper explores the hidden costs of English language learning (ELL). In a context where English has become a commodity and ELL a form of consumption, we focus on the personal and social costs of (a) studying abroad as a much-touted path to "native-like" proficiency and (b) sexualization of language teaching materials in order to reach new niche markets. The hidden costs of ELL are embedded in language ideologies which set English up as a magical means of self-transformation and, at the same time, an unattainable goal for most Japanese and Koreans. We end with the call to expose debilitating language ideologies in order to shed light on the hidden costs of ELL.

Towards a small language model powered chain-of-reasoning for open-domain question answering

  • We focus on open-domain question-answering tasks that involve a chain-of-reasoning, which are primarily implemented using large language models. With an emphasis on cost-effectiveness, we designed EffiChainQA, an architecture centered on the use of small language models. We employed a retrieval-based language model to address the limitations of large language models, such as the hallucination issue and the lack of updated knowledge. To enhance reasoning capabilities, we introduced a question decomposer that leverages a generative language model and serves as a key component in the chain-of-reasoning process. To generate training data for our question decomposer, we leveraged ChatGPT, which is known for its data augmentation ability. Comprehensive experiments were conducted using the HotpotQA dataset. Our method outperformed several established approaches, including the Chain-of-Thoughts approach, which is based on large language models. Moreover, our results are on par with those of state-of-the-art Retrieve-then-Read methods that utilize large language models.

유아 언어교육에 대한 교사의 인식 및 요구 - 유아 언어교육의 목적, 내용, 방법, 평가 및 요구를 중심으로 (The early childhood teacher's recognition and demand on children's language education - focused on purpose, contents, method, evaluation and the required facts of children's language education)

  • This study had been done to investigate that early childhood teacher's recognition and demand on children's language education and 20 early childhood teachers were interviewed individually who work at state-owned/ public-owned/ private-owned kindergardens residing G, I, and K cities in Jeollabuk-do. First, the purpose of language education was recognized on the formations of essence, concept, expertise, technique and attitude toward language. Second, the contents of language education must be selected by children's experience that they encounter in ordinary life based on oral language and written language. Besides, early childhood teachers strongly felt the necessity of new contents of language education, although they thought of insufficiency of their knowledge on the issue. Third, the method of language education was mainly accomplished by teaching material and objects. Besides, they were aware of looking for new organized teaching methods and also concerned of the importances of teacher's attitude and group formation method. Fourth, the evaluation of language education must be acquired by desirable evaluation method that was based on the recognition of children's unrealistic language capabilities, even though they had recognized the difficulty to do because of knowledge insufficiency. They also showed the tendency of negligence on the evaluation of language education. Fifth, the required facts for early childhood teachers on language education were development and supply of teaching materials, demand on teacher's education and appropriate evaluation method, and cognitive changes on language education by public toward the written language.

  • Language is not abstract. We use language to communicate out thoughts and emotions. Films are the most public form of arts, where language is all essential part; however, there have been, if any, few films the main theme of which is language. Although language may not be the main theme of films, we can find many kinds of information relating to language and linguistics by careful examination. In reference to some films, we can talk about subjects in the fields of theoretical linguistics such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. In addition, subjects in applied linguistics such as sociolinguistics and computational linguistics may be discussed with reference to other films.

연결망 분석도구를 이용한 크리스토퍼 알렉산더 패턴언어 활용 가능성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Possibility to Use Christopher Alexander's Pattern Language by Using Network Analysis Tool)

  • This study is aimed to increase the possibility of using the Christopher Alexander's pattern language. The methodology of this study is (i) to analyze the pattern language by using the network analysis tool in order to understand the complicate network structure of the pattern language, and (ii) to apply the Alexander's method of using the pattern language by using the network analysis tool (Gephi) and to examine the feasibility of the network analysis tool as a tool for using the pattern language. Firstly, as a result of analysing the pattern language, (i) the pattern language classified by pattern number is distinguished by the patterns of towns, buildings and construction, among which the pattern of buildings plays a key function in the networks; (ii) the buildings functions a medium connecting between the towns and the construction; and (iii) the pattern language is divided into 6 sub-modules, through which the user can select a pattern. Secondly, the result of using the network analysis tool as a tool for using the pattern language (i) suggests the new method of using the pattern language by using the network analysis tool (Gephi); (ii) makes it possible to easily figure out the characteristics of the links between the patterns; and (iii) increases the completeness of the pattern language by making it easy to find out the sub-patterns in selecting a pattern.

  • 본 논문은 한국 수어에 대하여 수어 인식, 수어 번역, 수어 영상 시분할과 같은 수어에 관한 딥러닝 연구를 위한 데이터셋의 수집 및 실험을 진행하였다. 수어 연구를 위한 어려움은 2가지로 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 손의 움직임과 손의 방향, 표정 등의 종합적인 정보를 가지는 수어의 특성에 따른 인식의 어려움이 있다. 둘째, 딥러닝 연구를 진행하기 위한 학습데이터의 절대적 부재이다. 현재 알려진 문장 단위의 한국 수어 데이터셋은 KETI 데이터셋이 유일하다. 해외의 수어 딥러닝 연구를 위한 데이터셋은 Isolated 수어와 Continuous 수어 두 가지로 분류되어 수집되며 시간이 지날수록 더 많은 양의 수어 데이터가 수집되고 있다. 하지만 이러한 해외의 수어 데이터셋도 방대한 데이터셋을 필요로 하는 딥러닝 연구를 위해서는 부족한 상황이다. 본 연구에서는 한국 수어 딥러닝 연구를 진행하기 위한 대규모의 한국어-수어 데이터셋을 수집을 시도하였으며 베이스라인 모델을 이용하여 수어 번역 모델의 성능 평가 실험을 진행하였다. 본 논문을 위해 수집된 데이터셋은 총 11,402개의 영상과 텍스트로 구성되었다. 이를 이용하여 학습을 진행할 베이스라인 모델로는 수어 번역 분야에서 SOTA의 성능을 가지고 있는 TSPNet 모델을 이용하였다. 본 논문의 실험에서 수집된 데이터셋에 대한 특성을 정량적으로 보이고, 베이스라인 모델의 실험 결과로는 BLEU-4 score 3.63을 보였다. 또한, 향후 연구에서 보다 정확하게 데이터셋을 수집할 수 있도록, 한국어-수어 데이터셋 수집에 있어서 고려할 점을 평가 결과에 대한 고찰로 제시한다.

장애인의 언어장애 유무에 따른 사회인구학적 특성, 수단적 일상생활, 필요한 보건의료서비스의 차이 (Differences between Sociodemographic Characteristics, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, and Healthcare Needs in Disabled Persons with and without Language)

  • Purpose : The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in sociodemographic characteristics, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and healthcare needs among disabled persons with and without language disorder. Methods : Using raw data from the National Survey of the Disabled Person (2017), this study compared 6,320 disabled persons without language disorder and 229 disabled person with language disorder among 6,549 persons with disabilities. The dependent variables included sociodemographic characteristics, IADL, and healthcare needs. Results : People with language disorder were younger (p<.001), illiterate (p<.001), and had higher family income (p=.003) than people without language disorder. In addition, people with language disorder had a higher disability grade than people without language disorder (p<.001), and the percentages of brain injury, hearing impairment, and intellectual disability were higher among type of disability (p<.001). People with language disorder showed significantly higher dependence on all items of IADL than people without language disorder (p<.001). As the first-ranked healthcare need, people without language disorder had the highest percentage of "chronic illness management," and people with language disorder had the highest percentage of "disability management" (p<.001). Conclusion : The findings of the current investigation suggest that health care services are needed to improve IADL in people with language disorder and that the development of a disability management program for people with language disorder is required.

역사적 변천에 따른 한국수어 번역의 형태와 특성 연구 (A Study on the Forms and Characteristics of Korean Sign Language Translation According to Historical Changes)

  • 과학기술의 발달에 힘입은 혁신적인 번역 환경은 수어 번역의 확대 가능성과 실현성을 높이는 요소가 되고 있다. 한국수어 번역도 새로운 도전과 기회를 맞이하고 있다. 본 연구는 첫째, '한국수어 번역은 한국수어의 역사적 변천과정 속에서 언제 어떻게 나타났는가?', 둘째, '한국수어 번역의 결과로 산출된 번역의 형태와 특성은 무엇인가?', 셋째, '한국수어 번역의 현황과 전망은 어떠한가?'라는 연구 질문들을 제기하고 이에 대한 대답을 찾아간다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 통합적 문헌고찰 방법을 사용해 역사적으로 한국수어 번역이 어떻게 형성되었으며 한국수어 번역의 형태와 특성은 어떠한지를 고찰하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 수어번역 잠재기, 형성기, 확장기로 구분되는 역사적 변천과정에 따른 한국수어 번역의 형태와 특성이 나타났으며, 둘째, 한국수어 말뭉치 사업과 기계번역에 따른 한국수어 번역의 형태와 특성이 도출되었다. 아울러 한국수어 번역의 현황을 파악하고, 향후 전망을 제시하였다.

A Study on Integrating Digital Application into Foreign Language Education

  • The purpose of this paper is to discover how the use of digital applications can affect students' attitudes toward positive classroom participation and performance in learning a foreign language. Participants of this study were 128 students who took a foreign language class at a high school in central Korea. To find out students' perceptions and attitudes toward the effect of using a digital application for their foreign language study, online questionnaire and focus-group interview were conducted. Our research findings revealed that these students could engage in active language learning and experience learning improvement while studying a foreign language with digital applications. The improvement was possible by creating more interactive activities and quizzes. In addition, the digital application provided students immediate feedback. It gave students and teachers various motivations beyond the traditional 'chalk and talk' format of text-only-classes. This study provides an overview of the usefulness of digital application. In addition, it provides understanding for students' perceptions and involvement using digital application in a foreign language classroom.

사회 언어학적 입장에서 본 유아의 문해습득 (Young Chidren's Literacy Acquisition from a Sociolinguistic Perspective)

  • Literacy acquisition is a social phenomenon. Children in a literate society grow up with literacy as an integral part of their personal, familial, and social histories. Because it is language, children learn written language in ways similar to oral language. However. because it is written, the ways in which written language differs from oral language in terms of its different functions and forms affect the way in which children learn written language. Written language is likely to be more decontextualized than spoken language. The ability to use decontextualized language seems to be crucial to successful participation and progress in school. Experiences identified as contributing to preschool children's literacy development contribute to their ability to use language in a decontextualized way. Teale and Sulzby's(1986) metaphor of emergent literacy has provided a conceptual scheme for understanding the nature and process of literacy acquisition in early childhood.
