Forest vegetation in Mt. Jangan County Park, Jeonlabuk-Do, Korea, was investigated by classification and ordination methods. By the cluster analysis (classification) method, nine groups were recognized as follows : Quercus serrata community, Quercus serrata- Carpinus laxiflora community, Cornus controversa community, Fraxinus mandshurica community, Carpinus laxiflora community, Quereus variabilis community, Quercus mongolica - Sasa borealis community. Quercus mongolica - Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa community and Quercus mongolica - Rhododendron schlippenbachii community. These groups showed differences in species composition and environmental characteristics, but Quercus mongolica - Sasa borealis community, Quercus mongolica - Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa community and Quercus mongolica - Rhododendron schlippenbachii community among them showed very similar floristic composition to each other. The interrelationship between the floristic composition of the vegetation and environmental factors was analysed by principal component analysis (PCA). Quercus mongolica community was distributed at a high altitude (900~1200 m above sea level). Fraxinus mandshurica community and Cornus controversa community were differentiated from the other communities with high contents of soil moisture and pH. On the other hand, Carpinus laxiflora community and Quercus variabilis community were distributed at places with adequate levels of soil moisture, soil organic matter. and at low altitude. In this study, the altitude and soil moisture were the main factors determining the forest vegetation. They were strongly correlated with the dominant compositional gradient at the localities examined.

Several Sungsi Gardens were built up in Old West Village during the period of the Joseon Dynasty. Most of them were painted as True-View landscape painting. This study aims at examining original locations of representative gardens of the Old West Village by empirical investigation of related True-View landscape paintings. It seeks to demonstrate the garden landscape in True-View landscape painting by utilizing ArcGIS, 3D topographic modeling to observe geographical locations and landscape more realistically. After forming 3D topographic modeling of estimated locations of the gardens, location of objects at composition of 3D modeling similar to True-View landscape painting was found by shifting viewpoints. And by overlapping the cadastral map on the modeling, we could verify the current lot number of the garden sites. The interpretation of processes and results are as follows. In the early stage, Chungpunggye garden was built at the very end of Mt. InWang valley. The site is hidden from the outside, and appeared as 'Enclosed Landscape'. In the middle stage, Chunghuigak garden was built between Okryu-dong valley and the surrounding ridge. It appeared as 'Semi-Opened Landscape'. In the late stage, Seowon garden was built at the highest level of the ridge among the research areas. It appeared as 'Prospective Landscape'. In the last period, Songsukwon garden, was built at a point of contact of the ridge end and surrounding residential area. So it appeared as 'Opened Landscape' to the town. In other words, the location, landscape and social function of the gardens in Old West Village had been gradually opened in Joseon Dynasty.

Seoul City planned "Dreamland" to be in harmony with the huge woods and park. It is located in the life zone in the northern region of Seoul as part of an extensive park development plan that the municipal government has promoted. The space configuration technique of the aesthetics of "Empty" rather than "Full" gives the potentiality to cope with the uncertain changes in the city. Furthermore, the traditional element of the mountain landscape of Seoul was introduced and appropriated as the axis of the landscape for landscape configuration. In that configuration, the images of tree, sky, wind, water and soil are elegantly unfolded like a landscape painting. The purpose was to create a dominant landmark in the city landscape with the figures of Korean mountains and hills which were differentiated from architectural landmarks in the western cities by making nature, which was excluded from the urbanization plans up to now, an important subject for consideration. As a result, this study madethe space in a park including existing yards and streets in a city have the traditional hierarchy by applying the facility arrangement technique and elements extracted from Korean space types and traditional landscape concepts. Moreover, the North Seoul Dream Forest was designed by pursuing diversity and potentiality in the experience of space using a large open field in a city.

This study aims to highlight the possibility in identifying species composition of fish communities using the environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding technique, from both of the technical introduction and the pilot test at urban ecological streams. This new emerging survey technique using eDNA is getting popular in the world as a compensating way for the conventional field survey. However, the application to the domestic cases has yet to be studied. We attempted to use this technique for identifying fish species observed at four survey points in Hwangguji-chon, Suwon City. As a result, the detected number of species by eDNA sampled once in May was significantly matched with the total number of observed species in annual field surveys. Additionally eDNA results indicated the presence possibility of the unobserved species in field last year, even though the validation may be required. This survey technique seems to be more efficient and applicable to diverse situations of the fields and species, thereby needs to be studied further. We discussed the pros and cons of the application and summarized the research directions in future.
Despite it has been mentioned that the successful restoration in landscape level was achieved in the Young-il soil erosion control project, quantitative evaluation of restored plant communities (Alnus firma as introduced species and Pinus thunbergii as native species) was hardly founded. Light availability, litter and woody debris cover, and forest structure and composition were determined for 500 m2 band-quadrat in three forest types. Abiotic factors of Q. serrata stands, as reference forest, and A. firma stands were similar but not for P. thunbergii stands. There were no significant difference on mean stem density (stems ha-1, H = 3.6, p = 0.162), and the mean basal area of each stand had marginal significance (m2 ha-1, H = 5.7, p = 0.058) among stands as total basal area was higher with the order of A. firma (21.4 m2 ha-1), P. thunbergii (19.8 m2 ha-1) and Q. serrata (16.2 m2 ha-1). Restoration of vegetation structure was more effective in fast-growing and N-fixing A. firma, as introduced species plantation. However, result of MRPP, NMS ordination and ISPAN for herbaceous layer, not for tree and shrub species composition, indicated that restoration of ground vegetation was likely influenced highly from local environment. Propagule availability from landscape context such as connectedness to natural vegetation and management practices in restored isolated stands are available explanations for restoration effects and gaps between restored plantations and secondary oak forest.

Natural disturbance and environmental pressure on natural ecosystems are gradually increasing, and the cause is significantly related to large-scale environmental pollution, global warming, decreasing biodiversity and habitat fragmentation. Environmental impact assessment(EIA) in Korea has been focused on distribution and composition of fauna and flora as major evaluation aspects in ecosystem assessment. It is well known that those characteristics of flora and fauna strongly depend on characteristics and quality of habitat and ecosystem. However, there is no items to assess habitat and ecosystems of spatial ecological system in EIA. Many countries are trying to develop the EIA items to consider the spatial characteristics of habitat and ecosystem and those ecological dynamics as well as species level. In this stream, landscape ecology is emerging discipline to examine spatial pattern and ecological process within/between habitats and ecosystems. Landscape ecological analysis, as a special tool for ecosystem evaluation, has been appropriately adopted to the EIA system in the advanced countries. This review paper tries to introducing the possibilities of landscape ecological concept into the Korean EIA system.

The purpose of this study was to develop the principle of space composition in Jungja of a category of korean traditional space. The results which analyzed outside space, prospect angle and preference factors for landscape with making, Jungja which has artificially constructed pond within Gyeongbug province, the subject of study were as fellows ; Size of pond was quite different in each Jungja, and its form was retangular. There was built circle island or figured ten-long life within pond. These pursued harmony of the cosmic dual force or eternal youth. Average angle of depression and horizontal angle from floor of Jungja to pond were respectively 16$^{\circ}$ 23', 48$^{\circ}$ 26'. Average angle of depression to island in pond was 13$^{\circ}$28'. Average angle of depression from floor of Jungia to wall was 2$^{\circ}$58'. With controlling height of wall, there was maintained privacy and used borrowed landscape. Tree within garden was mainly planted a deciduous tall tree, the important species of tree were bamboo, pomegranate tree, crape myrtle, etc. Variables that gave influence on landscape preference degree were things about tree and pond. On prospecting pond, these variables-feeling for shore protection, impression for water, visual depth to pond feeling for shore protection, impression for water, visual depth to pond-gave Largely influences.

Habitat loss and fragmentation are ongoing major anthropogenic impacts on landscapes, which can strongly affect ecosystems, populations and species. The studies on forest fragmentation have been progressed, but the studies on definition of forest fragmentation and their synthetic trend in South Korea still leaves much to be desired. Therefore we set the definition of forest fragmentation and reviewed the related papers. We can give a definition that forest fragmentation is not only a process of spatial landscape transformation, but also a process of ecosystem change by it. The trend of studies on forest fragmentation divided into two fields, landscape and ecosystem changes. Forest fragmentation caused by land change altered the composition and configuration of forest patches. Most studies related on that analyzed the change using landscape index. The effects of forest fragmentation on ecosystem subdivided into three fields : biodiversity, edge effects, and invasive species, but the studies in South Korea is short. The study on relations between forest fragmentation and ecosystem change is necessary to face the Convention on Biological Diversity in South Korea. In addition, the fundamental studies on biodiversity is important to mitigate against forest fragmentation.

Most of studies about Taegni-Ji were searched in the field of geography and history. These are relrealed the conflictin respects of the structure and contents of Taegni-Ji. This study reviewed these studies and searched for limits and inquiries. Thus the parts of overlooking in them were dealt with and interpretated in terms of the characters of the contents and structure of Taegni-Ji. This book is regarded as the subjects of traditional evaluation of landscape. Tractional landscapes were related to Pung-su in many sides. So the contents specialty related to Pung-su which refered used in Taegni-Ji were discussed through the system of Taegni-Ji. As a result the terms of Pung-su used in Taegni-Ji must be researched which were specific term or not. Those studies are bibliographical review. Taegni-Ji contains of many apparent view of rural landscape thug they will be carried to field survey. Research in this area is at an early stage. The Present stuffy was confined to an examination of the characteristics and transformation process of the location of seowons However, it is hoped that this study will offer meaningful guide for further research.

Urban development typically results in many species being confined to small, isolated and degraded habitat fragments. Fragment size and isolation underpin many studies of modified landscape to prevent biodiversity loss. However, habitat characteristics such as vegetation structure and edge effects are less frequently incorporated in planning. The relative influence of biogeographic (e.g. size, isolation) and vegetation parameters on assemblages is poorly understood, but critical for conservation management. In this study, the relative importance of biogeographic and vegetation parameters in explaining the diversity of forest-interior dwelling birds in forest fragments in Chungcheong Province Area. Fragment size and vegetation characteristics were consistently important predictors of bird diversity. Forestinterior bird richness was influenced by fragment size (0.437), wood age (0.332), wood diameter (0.068), and patch shape (-0.079). To preserve bird diversity of Chungcheong Province Area, it is important to consider differing responses of bird diversity to landscape change, move beyond a focus primarily on spatial attributes (size, isolation) to recognize that landscape change also has profound effects on habitat composition and quality. The result is very useful for long-term aspect of biodiversity conservation plan in regional scale.
