There is an increasing need to use data from different sensors in order to maximize the chances of obtaining a cloud-free image and to meet timely requirements for information. However, the use of data from multiple sensor systems is depending on comprehensive relationships between sensors of different types. Indeed, a study of inter-sensor relationships is well advanced in the effective use of remotely sensed data from multiple sensors. This paper was concerned with relationships between sensors of different types for vegetation indices (VI). The study was conducted using IKONOS and Landsat-7 ETM+ images. IKONOS and Landsat-7 ETM+ image of the same or about the same dates were acquired. The Landsat-7 ETM+ images were resampled in order to make them coincide with the pixel sizes of IKONOS. Inter-relationships of vegetation indices between images were performed using at-satellite reflectance obtained by converting image digital number (DN). All images were applied to topographic normalization method in order to reduce topographic effect in digital imagery. Also, Inter-sensor model equations between two sensors were developed and applied to other study region. In the result, the relational equations can be used to compute or interpret VI of one sensor using the VI of another sensor.
This study was aimed to examine the Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) index, which matches well with the field survey data in the wildfire area of Gangneung, Gangweon Province, Korea. In the wildfire area NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), SAVI (Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index), and Tasseled Cap Transformation Index (Brightness, Wetness, Greenness) were compared with field survey data. NDVI and SAVI were very useful in detecting the difference between the wildfire and non-wildfire area, but not so in classify the soil types in the wildfire area. The soil plane based on the Tasseled Cap Transformation showed a better result in classifying the soil types in the wildfire areas than NDVI and SAVI, and corresponded well with field survey data. Using a linear function based on greenness and wetness in the Tasseled Cap Transformation is expected to provide a more efficient and quicker method to classify wildfire areas.
The usefulness of the multi-temporal satellite image to monitoring the vegetation recovery process after forest fire was tested. Using multi-temporal Landsat TM and ETM+data, NDVI and NBR changes over times were analyzed. Both NDVI and NBR values were rapidly decreased after the fire and gradually increased for all forest type and damage class. However, NBR curve showed much clearer tendency of vegetation recovery than NDVI. Both indices yielded the lowest values in severely damaged red pine forest. The results show the vegetation recovery process after forest fire can detect and monitor using multi-temporal Landsat image. NBR was proved to be useful to examine the recovering and development process of the vegetation after fire. In the not damaged forest, however the NDVI shows more potential capability to discriminate the forest types than NBR..
Selective logging is currently a widely adopted management practice throughout the tropics. Monitoring of spatial extent and intensity of such logging is, therefore, becoming an important issue for sustainable management of forest. This study explores the possibility of using vegetation indices and Landsat 7 ETM+ image for this purpose. Two dataset acquired on 2002 and 2000 of Labanan concession area East Kalimantan, Indonesia were used. Three different vegetation indices (MSAVI, SAVI and NDVI) slicing and differentiating methods were tested. The results showed that the MSAVI is superior with overall accuracy of 77% and kappa 0.64.
This research investigated the 2001 spring drought on croplands in South Korea using satellite imagery. South Korea has suffered from spring droughts almost every year. Meteorological indices have been used for monitoring droughts, however they don't tell the local severity of drought. Therefore, this research aimed at detecting the local, spatial pattern of drought severity at a cropland level. This research analyzed the agricultural drought using the wetness of remotely sensed pixels that affects the growth of early crops significantly in the spring. This research, specifically, analyzed the spatial distribution and severity of drought using the tasseled cap transformation and topographical factors. The wetness index from the tasseled cap transformation of Landsat 7 ETM/sub +/ imagery was very useful for detecting the 2001 spring drought susceptibility in agricultural croplands. Especially, the wetness values smaller than -0.2 were identified as the croplands that were suffering from serious water deficit. Using the water deficit pixels, drought severity was modeled finally.

Landscape indices are effective tools to explain the spatial structure and patterns of ecological landscape including area/density, shape, core area, isolation/proximity, contagion/interspersion, and connectivity. More than 100 indices have been developed and an increasing amount of research explains changes in urban spaces using the indices. However, landscape indices have a high level of sensitivity to the scale of analysis - grain size and extent. If the scale sensitivity of indices is not considered, the research may produce inaccurate results. This study examines the scale sensitivity of landscape indices to find relatively stable indices in the complex geographical features of Korea. The scale sensitivity was analyzed using 20 categories of grain size and 41 categories of extent change. Landsat TM and ETM+ images of five years - 1985, 1991, 1996, 2000 and 2003 - were used, and 54 class level indices mounted on the FRAGSTATS program were examined. The results are as follows: First, according to the analysis of the scale sensitivity, 19 out of 54 class level indices were found to be stable to scale change. Second, the scale sensitivity was closely related to the green area ratio, and the typical threshold of change was $40{\sim}50%$. Third, among the 16 indices which were frequently used in the research in Korea, only 6 indices were relatively stable to the scale change. These results can be an effective basis for the selection of indices in the landscape ecology research in Korea.
This study was carried out in part of Tamil Nadu, India. Also, Landsat ETM+ image and field sampling data were acquired. The field data were basal area, number of trees and number of species. Using the data set, this study performed a three steps processing, (1) Image classification (2) extracting the vegetation indices(NDVI, Tasseled cap brightness, greenness and wetness) (3) mapping the prediction of biodiversity distribution using basal area and NDVI image value. Basal area was significantly correlated with NDVI. The result of classification showed 69% overall accuracy.
Spatial information on forest biomass is an important factor to evaluate the capability of forest as a carbon sequestrator and is a core independent variable required to drive models which describe ecological processes such as carbon budget, hydrological budget, and energy flow. The objective of this study is to understand the relationship between satellite image and field data, and to quantitatively estimate and map the spatial distribution of forest biomass. Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) derived vegetation indices and field survey data were applied to estimate the biomass distribution of mountainous forest located in Gwangneung Experimental Forest (230 ha). Field survey data collected from the ground plots were used as the dependent variable, forest biomass, while satellite image reflectance data (Band 1~5 and Band 7), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), and RVI (Ratio Vegetation Index) were used as the independent variables. The mean and total biomass of Gwangneung catchment area were estimated to be about 229.5 ton/ha and $52.8{\times}10^3$ tons respectively. Regression analysis revealed significant relationships between the measured biomass and Landsat derived variables in both of deciduous forest ($R^2=0.76$, P < 0.05) and coniferous forest ($R^2=0.75$, P < 0.05). However, there still exist many uncertainties in the estimation of forest ecosystem parameters based on vegetation remote sensing. Developing remote sensing techniques with adequate filed survey data over a long period are expected to increase the estimation accuracy of spatial information of the forest ecosystem.

Fusing satellite images and site-specific observations have potential to improve a predictive quality of environmental properties. However, the effect of the utilization of satellite images to predict soil properties in a wetland is still poorly understood. For the reason, block kriging and regression kriging were applied to a natural wetland, Water Conservation Area-2A in Florida, to compare the accuracy improvement of continuous models predicting total phosphorus in soils. Field observations were used to develop the soil total phosphorus prediction models. Additionally, the spectral data and derived indices from Landsat ETM+, which has 30 m spatial resolution, were used as independent variables for the regression kriging model. The block kriging model showed $R^2$ of 0.59 and the regression kriging model showed $R^2$ of 0.49. Although the block kriging performed better than the regession kriging, both models showed similar spatial patterns. Moreover, regression kriging utilizing a Landsat ETM+ image facilitated to capture unique and complex landscape features of the study area.

The effect of streamflow considering future land use change and vegetation index information by climate change scenario was assessed using SLURP (Semi-distributed Land-Use Runoff Process) model. The model was calibrated and verified using 4 years (1999-2002) daily observed streamflow data for the upstream watershed ($260.4km^2$) of Gyeongan water level gauging station. By applying CA-Markov technique, the future land uses (2030, 2060, 2090) were predicted after test the comparison of 2004 Landsat land use and 2004 CA-Markov land use by 1996 and 2000 land use data. The future land use showed a tendency that the forest and paddy decreased while urban, grassland and bareground increased. The future vegetation indices (2030, 2060, 2090) were estimated by the equation of linear regression between monthly NDVI of NOAA AVHRR images and monthly mean temperature of 5 years (1998-2002). Using CCCma CGCM2 simulation result based on SRES A2 and B2 scenario (2030s, 2060s, 2090s) of IPCC and data were downscaled by Stochastic Spatio-Temporal Random Cascade Model (SST-RCM) technique, the model showed that the future runoff ratio was predicted from 13% to 34% while the runoff ratio of 1999-2002 was 59%. On the other hand, the impact on runoff ratio by land use change showed about 0.1% to 1% increase.
