Chlorophyll-a concentration maps of Yongdam reservoir in September and October, 2001 were produced using Landsat ETM imagery and the in-situ water quality measurement data. In-situ water samples were collected on 16th September and 18th October during the satellite overpass. The correlations between the DN values of the imagery and the values of chlorophyll-a concentration were analyzed. The visible bands(band 1, 2, 3) and the near infrared band(band 4) data of September image showed the correlation coefficient values higher than 0.9. The October image showed correlation coefficient values of about 0.7 due to the low variations of chlorophyll-a concentration. Regression models between the DN values of the Landsat ETM image and the chlorophyll-a concentration have been developed for each image. The developed regression models were then applied to each image, and finally the chlorophyll-a distribution maps of Yongdam reservoir were produced. The produced maps showed the spatial distribution of the chlorophyll-a in Yongdam reservoir in a synoptic way so that the tropic state could be easily monitored and analysed in the spatial domain.
In this study, we analyzed surface temperature of lakes in the Han River system, using Landsat-5 and -7 time-series images. Surface temperature was extracted using NASA equation and compared with in situ 10m-depth temperature in Lake Soyang and surface temperature on five other dam lakes downstream. The 24 images out of 29 showed standard deviation of temperature difference less than $2^{\circ}C$, to which a novel statistical atmospheric correction could be applied. The correlation coefficients were 0.950 at Lake Soyang and 0.979-0.997 at the other lakes after atmospheric correction.
It is very important to monitor change of a forest. We compare the different seasonal remote sensing data to detect forest damaged by typhoons and build a method to detect the area damaged by typhoons. Study site is located in western Oita prefecture. The multitemporal satellite dataset of this study were consisted of four Landsat TM scenes taken before and after the typhoons. As compared with non-damaged area, it was shown that the reflective characteristic of the damaged area becomes high by band 3, band 5, and band 7. These bands are effective in extracting the typhoon damaged area.
Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied for regional geological mapping to a multivariate data set of the Landsat TM data in the heavily vegetated and topographically rugged Chungju area. The multivariate data set selection was made by statistical analysis based on the magnitude of regression of squares in multiple regression, and it includes R1/2/R3/4, R2/3, R5/7/R4/3, R1/2, R3/4. R4/3. AND R4/5. As a result of application of PCA, some of later principal components (in this study PC 3 and PC 5) are geologically more significant than earlier major components, PC 1 and PC 2 herein. The earlier two major components which comprise 96% of the total information of the data set, mainly represent reflectance of vegetation and topographic effects, while though the rest represent 3% of the total information which statistically indicates the information unstable, geological significance of PC3 and PC5 in the study implies that application of the technique in more favorable areas should lead to much better results.

In this study, we investigated the seasonal variation of SST(Sea Surface Temperature) and thermal effluents estimated by using Landsat-7 ETM+ around the Kori Nuclear Power Plant for 10 years(2000~2010). Also, we analyzed the direction and range of thermal effluents dispersion by the tidal current and tide. The results are as follows, First, we figured out the algorithm to estimate SST through the linear regression analysis of Landsat DN(Digital Number) and NOAA SST. And then, the SST was verified by compared with the in situ measurement and NOAA SST. The determination coefficient is 0.97 and root mean square error is $1.05{\sim}1.24^{\circ}C$. Second, the SST distribution of Landsat-7 estimated by linear regression equation showed $12{\sim}13^{\circ}C$ in winter, $13{\sim}19^{\circ}C$ in spring, and $24{\sim}29^{\circ}C$ and $16{\sim}24^{\circ}C$ in summer and fall. The difference of between SST and thermal effluents temperature is $6{\sim}8^{\circ}C$ except for the summer season. The difference of SST is up to $2^{\circ}C$ in August. There is hardly any dispersion of thermal effluents in August. When it comes to the spread range of thermal effluents, the rise range of more than $1^{\circ}C$ in the sea surface temperature showed up to 7.56km from east to west and 8.43km from north to south. The maximum spread area was $11.65km^2$. It is expected that the findings of this study will be used as the foundational data for marine environment monitoring on the area around the nuclear power plant.
The study was performed to recognize the most preferable spectral chennels for discriminating geological materials using the portable radiometer. The portable radiometer covers the visible and short infrared regions from approximately 0.4 to 2.5 microns which are coincided with Landsat TM, and the rock samples used for the study are pyrophylites, andesites, granite, granodiorite and silicified sedimentary rocks which are collected in Yangsan-Dongrae fault area. The analysis of the rock sample provides a preliminary basis for determining the wavelength regions showing diagnostic spectral features and for discriminating hydrothermal altered rocks from the unaltered rocks. The measurement of spectral of spectral reflectance for the rock samples was carried out in the laboratory which environment condition such as temperature, light sources, and humidity are constant. The analysis of the measured data was based on correlation between the reflectance value of the rock samples, and the follow discriptions are output of the study. 1) Pyrophyllite shows absorption at 0.83 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to the oxidation of pyrite, and absorption at 2.22 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to OH. 2) The altered rocks have generally higher reflectance than the unaltered rocks. 3) The ratio mesurement of pyrophyllites shows strong absorption at band 5/6 and band 6/4(in Landsat TM 5/7, 7/4). The ratio 1/5(Landsat TM 1/5) may be useful to discriminate andesite from the granite.

The Land Cover/Land Use Map have been constructed from 1998, which has hierarchical structure according to land cover/land use system. Level 1 classification Map have done using Landsat satellite image over whole Korean peninsula. Level II classification Map have been digitized using IRS-1C, 1D, KOMPSAT and SPOT5 satellite images resolution-merged with low resolution color images. Level II Land Cover/Land Use Map construction by digitizing method, however, is consuming enormous expense for satellite image acquisition, image process and Land Cover/Land Use Map construction. In this paper, the possibility of constructing Level II Land Cover/Land Use Map using hyperspectral satellite image of EO-1 Hyperion, which is studied a lot recently, is studied. The comparison of classifications using Hyperion satellite image offering more spectral information and Landsat-7 ETM+ image is performed to evaluate the availability of Hyperion satellite image. Also, the algorithm of the optimal band selection is presented for effective application of hyperspectral satellite image.
Several commercial companies that plan to provide improved panchromatic and/or multi-spectral remote sensor data in the near future are suggesting that merge datasets will be of significant value. This study evaluated the utility of one major merging process-process components analysis and its inverse. The 6 bands of 30$\times$30m Landsat TM data and the 10$\times$l0m SPOT panchromatic data were used to create a new 10$\times$10m merged data file. For the image classification, 6 bands that is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th band may be used in conjunction with supervised classification algorithms except band 6. One of the 7 bands is Band 6 that records thermal IR energy and is rarely used because of its coarse spatial resolution (120m) except being employed in thermal mapping. Because SPOT panchromatic has high resolution it makes 10$\times$10m SPOT panchromatic data be used to classify for the detailed classification. SPOT as the Landsat has acquired hundreds of thousands of images in digital format that are commercially available and are used by scientists in different fields. After the merged, the classifications used supervised classification and neural network. The method of the supervised classification is what used parallelepiped and/or minimum distance and MLC(Maximum Likelihood Classification) The back-propagation in the multi-layer perception is one of the neural network. The used method in this paper is MLC(Maximum Likelihood Classification) of the supervised classification and the back-propagation of the neural network. Later in this research SPOT systems and images are compared with these classification. A comparative analysis of the classifications from the TM and merged SPOT/TM datasets will be resulted in some conclusions.

Atmospheric correction over the ocean part is more important than that over the land because the signal from the ocean is very small about one tenth of that reflected from land. In this study, the Spectral Shape Matching Method (SSMM) developed by Ahn and Shanmugam (2004) is evaluated using Landsat imagery acquired over the highly turbid Saemangeum Coastal Area. The result of SSMM is compared with COST model developed by Chavez (1991 and 1997). In principle, SSMM is simple and easy to implement on any satellite imagery, relying on both field and image properties. To assess the potential use of these methods, several field campaigns were conducted in the Saemangeum coastal area corresponding with Landsat-7 satellite's overpass on 29 May 2005. In-situ data collected from the coastal waters of Saemangeum using optical instruments (ASD field spectroradiometer) consists of ChI, Ap, SS, aooM, F(d). In order to perform SSMM, we use the in-situ water-leaving radiance spectra from clear oceanic waters to estimate the the path radiance from total signal recorded at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), due to the reason that the shape of clear water-leaving radiance spectra is nearly stable than turbid water-leaving radiance spectra. The retrieved water-leaving radiance after subtraction of path signal from TOA signal in this way is compared with that estimated by COST model. The result shows that SSMM enabled retrieval of water-leaving radiance spectra that are consistent with in-situ data obtained from Saemangeum coastal waters. The COST model yielded significantly high errors in these areas.
