  • As a viable option for retrieval of LST (Land Surface Temperature), this paper presents a DNN (Deep Neural Network) based approach using 148 Landsat 8 images for South Korea. Because the brightness temperature and emissivity for the band 10 (approx. 11-㎛ wavelength) of Landsat 8 are derived by combining physics-based equations and empirical coefficients, they include uncertainties according to regional conditions such as meteorology, climate, topography, and vegetation. To overcome this, we used several land surface variables such as NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), land cover types, topographic factors (elevation, slope, aspect, and ruggedness) as well as the T0 calculated from the brightness temperature and emissivity. We optimized four seasonal DNN models using the input variables and in-situ observations from ASOS (Automated Synoptic Observing System) to retrieve the LST, which is an advanced approach when compared with the existing method of the bias correction using a linear equation. The validation statistics from the 1,728 matchups during 2013-2019 showed a good performance of the CC=0.910~0.917 and RMSE=3.245~3.365℃, especially for spring and fall. Also, our DNN models produced a stable LST for all types of land cover. A future work using big data from Landsat 5/7/8 with additional land surface variables will be necessary for a more reliable retrieval of LST for high-resolution satellite images.

  • An algorithm for monitoring geomorphological change using remote sensing data is investigated and tested using two LANDSAT TM data sets acquired over the Kyunggi Bay on April 15 1986 and September 22 1992, respectively. The algorithm exploits change vector analysis and tasseled cap transform. Although change vector analysis is effective for change detection, efficiency is decreased as the number of variables are increased. In this algorithm, we overcome the problem by utilizing the tasseled cap transform which can reduce six bands of LANDSAT TM data into only two components called Brightness and Greenness. The test results demonstrate that the algorithm is very effective in monitoring small-scaled changes over coastal area as well as significant changes in geomorphology. The resulting change vector image, however, is more sensitive to the changes occurred by human activities than by pure geological processes mainly because of relatively short time interval between two LANDSAT TM data sets.

  • Integration of GIS data and human expert knowledge into digital image processing has long been acknowledged as a necessity to improve remote sensing image analysis. We propose inductive machine learning algorithm for GIS data integration and rule-based classification method for land cover classification. Proposed method is tested with a land cover classification of a Landsat ETM+ multispectral image and GIS data layers including elevation, aspect, slope, distance to water bodies, distance to road network, and population density. Decision trees and production rules for land cover classification are generated by C5.0 inductive machine learning algorithm with 350 stratified random point samples. Production rules are used for land cover classification integrated with unsupervised ISODATA classification. Result shows that GIS data layers such as elevation, distance to water bodies and population density can be effectively integrated for rule-based image classification. Intuitive production rules generated by inductive machine learning are easy to understand. Proposed method demonstrates how various GIS data layers can be integrated with remotely sensed imagery in a framework of knowledge base construction to improve land cover classification.

  • Because the satellite imagery can detect the radiative heat from the surface using the thermal IR (TIR) channel, there have been many efforts to verify the relationship between the land surface temperature (LST) and urban heat island. However, the relationship between geomorphological characteristics like surface aspects and LST is relatively less studied. Therefore, the geomorphological elements, for example, surface aspects and surface slopes, are considered to evaluate their effects on the change of the surface temperature distribution using the Landsat 7 ETM+ TIR channel and the possibility of the image to detect anthropogenic heat from the surface. We found that the surface aspect is ignorable but the surface slope with the sun elevation influences on the surface temperature distribution. Also, the radiative heat from the surface to the atmosphere could not be accurately recorded by the satellite image due to the surface slope but the slope correction process used in this study could correct the surface temperature under slope condition and the slope correction, in fact, was not influenced on the average temperature of the surface. The possibility of the anthropogenic heat detection from the surface from the satellite imagery was verified as well.

  • In this study, we extracted several terrain information using satellite and aerial images. We detected change of terrain using Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM) and aerial images which are multitemporal data. In change detection processing, we first classified satellite images by ISODATA algorithm which is an unsupervised learning algorithm, then performed change detection. By this method, we could obtain good result. Also we introduce sub-pixel concept to classify road and agriculture area in inaccessible area. In summary, in chang detection processing, we can find that the used method is efficient.

  • Fine temporal and spatial resolution of image data are necessary to monitor the phenology of vegetation. However, there is no single sensor provides fine temporal and spatial resolution. For solve this limitation, researches on spatiotemporal data fusion methods are being conducted. Among them, FSDAF (Flexible spatiotemporal data fusion) can fuse each band in high accuracy. In thisstudy, we applied MODIS NDVI and Landsat NDVI to enhance time resolution of NDVI based on FSDAF algorithm. Then we proposed the possibility of utilization in vegetation phenology monitoring. As a result of FSDAF method, the predicted NDVI from January to December well reflect the seasonal characteristics of broadleaf forest, evergreen forest and farmland. The RMSE values between predicted NDVI and actual NDVI (Landsat NDVI) of August and October were 0.049 and 0.085, and the correlation coefficients were 0.765 and 0.642 respectively. Spatiotemporal data fusion method is a pixel-based fusion technique that can be applied to variousspatial resolution images, and expected to be applied to various vegetation-related studies.

  • We are able to simultaneously extract the land surface change information, as we input each information extracted from images classified during the two periods, as the attribute information of geographic information, and then use it a parameter of GIS. Hence, this research sought to present basic data far efficient management and development of land surface, together with land use trends, by using the remote-sensing technique enabling the acquisition of the land surface covering information, as well as the benefits of GIS. The research conducted a study on the extraction of land surface change information, and made it possible to treat image information easily compared to the existing image classification methods, thereby making it easy to know the land surface change process for each pixel.

  • After the forest fire, as access is not easy, forest damage degree are determined with Landsat TM image rather than visual inspection. Therefore in this study, damaged areas are extracted with factor analysis and cluster analysis. Second factor analysis was performed for areas suspicious as forest fire damage areas to evaluate accuracy after separating into strong, medium and light forest fire areas.
