  • Land surface temperature(LST) is one of the key parameters in physics and meteorology of land-surface processes on regional and global scales. Urban Heat Island(UHI), a meteorological phenomenon by which the air temperature in an urban area increases beyond that in the suburbs, grows with the progress of urbanization. Satellite remote sensing has been expected to be effective for obtaining thermal information of the earth's surface with a high resolution. The main purpose of this study is to produce LST map of Cheongju and to analyze the spatial distributions of surface heat fluxes in urban areas. This study, taking Cheongju as the study area, aims to examine relationship between vegetation cover rates and surface temperature, and to clarify a method for calculation surface temperature with Landsat TM thermal images.

  • It is very important to monitor change of a forest. We compare the different seasonal remote sensing data to detect forest damaged by typhoons and build a method to detect the area damaged by typhoons. Study site is located in western Oita prefecture. The multitemporal satellite dataset of this study were consisted of four Landsat TM scenes taken before and after the typhoons. As compared with non-damaged area, it was shown that the reflective characteristic of the damaged area becomes high by band 3, band 5, and band 7. These bands are effective in extracting the typhoon damaged area.

  • The purpose of this preliminary study is the applied to geology using the Landsat TM satellite image of the Tanggung area of southern part of the Bandung, Indonesia to provide basic information for geological survey. For this, topography, geology and satellite image were constructed to spatial database. Digital elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, hill shade of topography were calculated from the topographic database and lithology was imported from the geological database. Lineament, lineament density, and NDVI were extracted the Landsat TM satellite image. The results showed the close relationship between geology and terrain and satellite image. Each sedimentary rock seldom corresponds with geology and analyses of topography but as a whole for sedimentary rocks coincide with them. Tuff and volcanic breccia in the volcanic rocks correspond with the result of terrain analyses. Talus deposits is well matched with the analyses of opography/satellite image.

  • An image-based atmospheric correction software ATC is implemented using MATLAB and SML (Spatial Modeler Language in ERDAS IMAGINE), and it was tested using Landsat TM/ETM+ data. This ATC has two main functional modules, which are composed of a semiautomatic type and an automatic type. The semi-automatic functional module includes the Julian day (JD), Earth-Sun distance (ESD), solar zenith angle (SZA) and path radiance (PR), which are programmed as individual small functions. For the automatic functional module, these parameters are computed by using the header file of Landsat TM/ETM+. Three atmospheric correction algorithms are included: The apparent reflectance model (AR), one-percent dark object subtraction technique (DOS), and cosine approximation model (COST). The ACT is efficient as well as easy to use in a system with MATLAB and SML.

  • Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied for regional geological mapping to a multivariate data set of the Landsat TM data in the heavily vegetated and topographically rugged Chungju area. The multivariate data set selection was made by statistical analysis based on the magnitude of regression of squares in multiple regression, and it includes R1/2/R3/4, R2/3, R5/7/R4/3, R1/2, R3/4. R4/3. AND R4/5. As a result of application of PCA, some of later principal components (in this study PC 3 and PC 5) are geologically more significant than earlier major components, PC 1 and PC 2 herein. The earlier two major components which comprise 96% of the total information of the data set, mainly represent reflectance of vegetation and topographic effects, while though the rest represent 3% of the total information which statistically indicates the information unstable, geological significance of PC3 and PC5 in the study implies that application of the technique in more favorable areas should lead to much better results.

  • The study is to analyze and interpret lineaments and circular/arc structures on the Landsat TM images which cover the Korean peninsula and the attched islands except the Ulneung island. The Landsat TM images which cover the Korean territory are 23 scenes, and band 3 and band 5 were selected for the study from seven bands, because the both vands are sensitive on soil moisture and geological materials. Lineament trend analysis Sinian direction (NNE-SSW), Pyeongan direction(NW-SE), Yodong direction(NE-SW), Korean direction(NNW-SSE) and Danyang direction (WNW-ESE) are predominant lineament trands of Korea. Circular/arc structures can be devided into four categories according to their origin; 1) volcanic activity origin, 2) granite intrusion oringin, 3) structural origin and 4) the others.

  • For estimating paddy field area with Landsat TM images, two dates, May 31, 1991 (transplanting stage) and August 19, 1991 (heading stage) were selected by the data analysis of digital numbers considering rice cropping calendar. Four different estimating methods (1) rule-based classification method, (2) supervised classification(maximum likelihood), (3) unsupervised classification (ISODATA, No. of class:15), (4) unsupervised classification (ISODATA, No. of class:20) were examined. Paddy field area was estimated to 7291.19 ha by non-classification method. In comparison with topographical map (1:25,000), accuracy far paddy field area was 92%. A new image stacked by 10 layers, Landsat TM band 3,4,5, RVI, and wetness in May 31,1991 and August 19,1991 was made to estimate paddy field area by both supervised and unsupervised classification method. Paddy field was classified to 9100.98 ha by supervised classification. Error matrix showed 97.2% overall accuracy far training samples. Accuracy compared with topographical map was 95%. Unsupervised classifications by ISODATA using principal axis. Paddy field area by two different classification number of criteria were 6663.60 ha and 5704.56 ha and accuracy compared with topographical map was 87% and 82%. Irrespective of the estimating methods, paddy fields were discriminated very well by using two-date Landsat TM images in May 31,1991 (transplanting stage) and August 19,1991 (heading stage). Among estimation methods, rule-based classification method was the easiest to analyze and fast to process.

  • The conventional monitoring of water quality constrained by time and equipment produce neither complete nor synoptic geographic coverage of pollutant distribution, transport, and water quality. To circumvent these limitations in temporal and spatial measurements, the use of remote sensing is increasingly being involved in the lacustrine environmental research. Consequently, satellite remote sensing, with its synoptic coverage, is used to obtain the eutrophication-related water quality parameters in Daecheong reservoir in this study. The approach involved acquisition of water quality samples from boats of 15 sites on 20 June 1995 and 30 sites on 18 March 1996, simultaneous with Landsat-5 satellite overpass. Regression models have been developed between the water quality parameters and Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM) digital data. The best regression model was determined based on the correlation coefficient which was higher than 0.6. As a result, satellite remote sensing can provide meaningful information on water quality parameters. The regression models developed in this study show good relationship for transparency, turbidity, SS, and chlorophyll, but not for TN and TP because their spectral characteristics are not well defined.
