  • A Switching control circuit based on a micro-controller is developed for blinking operation of fluorescent lamps, which would be suitable for use in the advertising panel. Ten modes of blinking patterns are implanted within the EEPROM. The developed circuit can handle up to 128 fluorescent lamps of 20-40W range, and the lamp life is expected to so beyond 3000 hours.

  • UV disinfection system allows the disinfection of municipal and industrial water and wastewater without the use of expensive chlorination and dechlorination techniques, labor intensive equipments In traditional ultraviolet systems the UV lamps are seperated from water by quartz sleeves. quartz is one of. the few materials that is virtually transparent to UV light, the UV lamp is placed inside the Quartz sleeve. UV light from the lamp is passed through the quartz and into the water, thereby providing disinfection. In fluoropolymer tube-used non-contact UV systems, the water flows through fluoropolymer plastic tubes. banks of UV lamps surround these tubes such that each tube gets exposed to ultra violet light from all sides. in non-contact design the lamps operates at almost constant temperature. this design is extremly efficient in the utilization of UV energy and superior to conventional contact- systems.

A Study on the Degradability of Pharmaceuticals during UV Treatment (자외선 처리시의 의약품류의 분해도에 관한 연구)

  • The photodegradation characteristics of 30 pharmaceuticals were investigated by batch experiments using Ultraviolet (UV) reactor. The investigated pharmaceuticals include antibiotics, analgesics and antiarrhythmic agents etc. Tested water was prepared by simultaneously spiking 30 pharmaceuticals into pure water, and each experiment was conducted using 3 types of UV lamps. As a result, batch experiments showed that reactions of all the investigated pharmaceuticals followed pseudo-first order reaction regardless of the applied UV lamps. Among the pharmaceuticals, Cyclophosphamide, 2-Quinoxaline carboxylic acid and Clarithromycin proved to be the most UV-resistant compounds. Contrarily, Ceftiofur, Diclofenac and Ketoprofen were easily degraded by all the UV lamps. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration hardly changed although the concentration of the pharmaceuticals concentration gradually decreased with time, indicating that the degradation of parent pharmaceuticals may produce their intermediates during UV treatment.

  • The most of metalhalide lamps is what the momentary restarting cannot be realized when the arc tube is in the hot condition. The discharge starting voltage of arc tube in the hot condition is much higher than in the cold condition in proportion to the gaseous pressure. Therefore it takes about ten minutes to restart the metal Halide lamps, that is to say, it is possible to start when the pressure and the temperature are decreased. But, if the lamp is restarted in the hot condition, we must supply the high voltage pulse with 15kV between the both electrodes of lamp. The proposed ignitor has two ignitors. If we connect each ignitor at the both sides, the high voltages of two different frequencies are generated. If so, when the one of the ignitor generates the highest voltage and the other applied to elecrodes of the lamp. In this way, we can restart the lamp with the voltage 15kV, even if the lamp is in the hot condition.

  • An experiment was carried out to evaluate the emotion and sensibility evoked from the different color temperatures(CCT) of electrodeless HID (ELHID) lamp. For this purpose, three ELHID lamps and a metal halide lamp were used as the experimental light sources and thirty Korean adjectives related to the lighting affectiveness were selected for the evaluation. The results showed that ELHID lamps induced different sensibilities according to their color temperature. In particular, 6500 K ELHID was similar to metal halide which has the CCT of 5600 K in the evaluation. Based on the results, we suggested some Korean adjectives and their corresponding English ones which are thought to be suitable for the verbal descriptions of ELHID lamps.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the calculated method of loss characteristics of full-bridge eletronic ballast for 250Watt HID lamps by approximated modeling. These lamps have the most emit effiency and color rendering. Especially, the majority of losses appear to the MOSFET do full-bridge, L of output terminal and driver IC, besides losses occur to the R in the ballast. These losses cause heating and breakage of MOSFET. When HID-lamp arrivals the steady-state, loss of ballast is measured 9% and analyzed value is 8% approximately. Accordingly it is not too much to say that greater part of losses is examined.

  • Recently, the eletrodeless lamp is introduced as a new light source of a high efficacy and long life. Although eletrodeless lamp's size is large, most of them is applied to general luminaire for HID lamps. It causes to decrease eletrodeless lamp's efficacy. Therefore, refractor luminaires can be an option to maintain efficacy, so that reflector luminaires are developed for such lamps. The purpose of this study is to develope a optical numerical model of planar prism luminaire that is able to obtain various luminous intensity distributions.

  • A number of guard lamps are utilized to ensure to safe walking during nighttime. Due to the lack of legal regulations, however, many guard lamps are not installed in organized ways, resulting in the increase of electric shock hazard. In order to establish the legal regulations which can be specifically applied to guard lamps, a research on the actual state of them is performed in this paper. As a result of the research, three regulations are addressed and suggested on equipment installation, management and development.

  • The metal halide lamps are now widely used in the application and commercial lighting due to their attracting properties such as good color rendering and high efficiency. But they have the serious problem of acoustic resonance for high frequency operation and they need the high voltage to ignite. So, they have not been applied to indoors. Over the past few years, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on the electronic ballast together with hot restarting and resonance phenomenon. But very few attempts have been made with the adaptive ignition method according to the lamp state. In this paper, electronic ballast is proposed for metal halide lamps with an igniter for adaptive ignition. The proposed electronic ballast can generate different ignition voltages according to the arc tube state.
