Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) is applied to fabricate the main structures of composite boats. Most of them are made from molds. These products deform after releasing from the mold and they also deform in high temperature environment. Therefore, experimental investigation and evaluation of deformation of laminated composite structures under various manufacturing and working conditions are necessary. The specimens of L-shape and curveshape were made from unsaturated polyester resin and fiberglass material. Input factors (independent variables) are percentage of hardener and manufacturing temperature and four levels of working temperature and output factor is the deformation which is measured on these specimens. From the results, it was observed that the higher the hardener rate and temperature, the lower the deformation. When the working temperature increased, the specimens showed great variations for the initial deformation values. Besides, the values of deformation or input factors could be predicted by regression equations.

Cylindrical shells of isotropic and composite laminated materials are being used many engineering applications. This paper reviews the literature focusing on various aspects of shell research. The aspects of research receiving interest here are the cylindrical theory being used, the stress, buckling analysis and the impact analysis. The vibration analyses and stiffening characteristics of the cylindrical shell are investigated. The design optimizations of the cylindrical shell are reviewed. The studies on the conical and spherical shell are also reviewed. This review aticles contain 236 referencees.

The aircraft composites wing parts are usually integrated with adhesive or fastener. These laminated composites have weak interlaminar strength, which can lead to delamination. In order to compensate the disadvantages of laminated composites, it is possible to improve the strength, durability, shock and fatigue resistance by reinforcing the fiber in the thickness direction. In addition, using a single structure near-net-shape saves the manufacturing time and the number of fasteners, thus can reduce the overall cost of the composite parts. In this study, compression test, tensile test and open-hole tensile test are carried out for three structural architecture of 3D (three-dimensional) textile preforms: orthogonal(ORT), layer-to-layer(LTL) and through-the-thickness(TTT) patterns. Among these, the orthogonal textile composite shows the highest Young's modulus and strength in tensile and compression. The notch sensitivity of the orthogonal textile composite was the smallest as compared with UD (unidirectional) and 2D (two-dimensional) fabric laminates.
As it is known, laminated composite materials are increasingly used in many technological applications, and in some instance, cutouts must be made into laminated panels for practical reasons, changing the stress distribution. The present study deals with the determination of the stress concentration factor that holes of square shape cause in an orthotropic plate subjected to distributed in - plane loading. Square holes of rounded corners in a rectangular plate are considered, and the effect of different combinations of axial and tangential forces applied to its middle plane at the external edges, is studied. The mutually perpendicular axes, which define the principal axes of orthotropy, are assumed in many different directions referred to the sides of the plate. Numerical experiments by means of a finite element code is performed, evaluating the influence of the fiber orientation with respect to the edges of the plate and the characteristics of the orthotropic materials since such structures do not exhibit easily predictable behavior.
The mechanical properties of generally orthotropic materials are conventionally measured by performing off-axis tensile and flexure tests. However, the inevitable coupling between tension and shear in case of tensile test or bending and twisting in flexure test case induces nonuniform displacement and stress fields. Consequential stress concentration along the boundary of specimens would result in inaccurate modulus and underestimated strength. This paper proposes the variation of specimen geometry in terms of appropriate obliquity of loaded boundary. For the purpose, classical lamination theory is transformed into skewed coordinate, and characteristic equations for both of unidirectional and laminated composite specimens are formulated. Finite element analysis is employed to show the validity of the skewedness in tensile and bending test specimens.
In this paper, an experimental study on the buckling and postbuckling control of a laminated composite beam with eccentrically embedded SMA wire actuators is performed. For the purpose of enhancing the critical buckling load, buckling control is investigated through the use of reactive moment associated with the shape recovery force of SMA wire actuators. To improve the control authority for the buckling and postbuckling control of the SMA-composite beam, closed-loop control is used. The buckling and postbuckling control behaviours are presented and discussed qualitatively and quantitatively on loaddeflection plots considering the stacking sequence of the laminate, slenderness ratio of the beam and activation conditions of the SMA wire actuators. By maintaining the desired deflection shape with the proper reactive moment, buckling control can be extended to the postbuckling of the SMA-composite beam subjected to an external load.
The prediction and analysis procedure of fatigue damage crack growth life for a stiffener bonded composite laminate panel including center hole and edge notch damage, was studied. It was performed on the basis of fatigue damage growth test results on a laminated skin panel specimens and the analysis results of stress intensity factor for the stiffener bonded composite panel. According to the comparison between experimental test and prediction results of fatigue damage growth life, it was concluded that the residual strength and damage tolerance assessment can be carried out along to the edge notch crack growth.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have received increased interest in reinforcing research for polymer matrix composites due to their exceptional mechanical characteristics. Its high surface area/volume ratio and aspect ratio enable polymer-based composites to make the most of its features. This study focuses on the experimental tensile testing and fabrication of carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) beams, exploring various micromechanical models. By examining the performance of these models alongside experimental results, the research aims to better understand and optimize the mechanical properties of CNTRC materials. Tensile properties of neat epoxy and 0.3%; 0.4% and 0.5% by CNT reinforced laminated single layer (0°/90°) carbon fiber composite beams were investigated. The composite plates were produced in accordance with ASTM D7264 standard. The tensile test was performed in order to see the mechanical properties of the composite beams. The results showed that the optimum amount of CNT was 0.3% based on the tensile capacity. The capacity was significantly reduced when 0.4% CNT was utilized. Moreover, the experimental results are compared with Finite Element Models using ABAQUS. Hashin Failure Criteria was utilized to predict the tensile capacity. Good conformance was observed between experimental and numerical models. More importantly is that Young' Moduli of the specimens is compared with the prediction Halpin-Tsai and Mixture-Rule. Although Halpin-Tsai can accurately predict the Young's Moduli of the specimens, the accuracy of Mixture-Rule was significantly low.
The demand for weight saving and high performance of aircraft require the more uses of composite materials. However the complicate behaviors and various failure characteristics restrict usage of composite materials. Low-velocity impact damage is a major concern in the design of structures made of composite materials, because impact damage is hidden and cannot be detected by visual inspection. Especially, the reduction on compressive strength after impact is influenced by the ply delaminations introduced as damage by impact event. In this research, the numerical analysis was performed to investigate impact damage and compressive strength after impact. It was found that impact force history and compressive strength after impact calculated by the numerical analysis were compared and shown a good agreement with experimental results.
REBCO coated conductors are widely used for HTS power application, high magnetic field magnet application, and etc. A thermal stability of the REBCO conductor is essential for the operation of HTS-based device, and thermal conductivities of the conductor are relevant parameters for modeling cryogenic heat transfer. REBCO conductors consist of a REBCO layer, copper layers for electrical stabilization and a hastelloy substrate. At cryogenic temperature, thermal conductivity of copper and silver strongly depend on the purity of the material and the intensity of the magnetic field. In this study, thermal conductivities of the laminated composite structure of REBCO conductor are evaluated by using the thermal network model and the multidimensional heat conduction analysis. As a result, the thermal network model is applicable to REBCO conductors configured in series or parallel alone and multidimensional heat conduction analysis is necessary for complex cases of series and parallel configuration.
