  • In this paper, a closed-form rigorous solution for interfacial stress in continuous steel beam with variable section strengthened with bonded prestressed FRP plates and subjected to a uniformly distributed load is developed using linear elastic theory and including the variation of fiber volume fractions with a longitudinal orientation of the fibers of the FRP plates. The results show that there exists a high concentration of both shear and normal stress at the ends of the laminate, which might result in premature failure of the strengthening scheme at these locations. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions. Overall, the predictions of the different solutions agree closely with each other. A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the sensitivity of interface behavior to parameters such as laminate and adhesive stiffness, the thickness of the laminate and the fiber volume fractions where all were found to have a marked effect on the magnitude of maximum shear and normal stress in the composite member. This research gives a numerical precision in relating to the others studies which neglect the effect of prestressed plate and the shear lag impact. The physical and geometric properties of materials are taken into account, and that may play an important role in reducing the interfacial stresses magnitude.

  • During the curing process of thick glass/epoxy laminates, a substantial amount of temperature lag and overshoot at the center of the laminates is usually experienced due to the large thickness and low thermal conductivity of the glass/epoxy composites. Also, it requires a longer time for full and uniform consolidation. In this work, temperature, degree of cure and consolidation of a 20mm thick unidirectional glass/epoxy laminate were investigated using an experiment and a 3-dimentional numerical analysis considering the exothermic reaction. From the experimental and numerical results, it was found that the experimentally obtained temperature profile agreed well with the numerical one and the cure cycle recommended by the prepreg manufacturer should be modified to prevent a temperature overshoot and to obtain full consolidation.

  • In the present analysis, the spline finite strip with higher-order shear deformation is formulated for the static analysis of piezoelectric composite plates. The proposed method incorporates Reddy's third-order shear deformation theory, Touratier's "Sine" model, Afaq's exponential model, Cho's higher-order zigzag laminate theory, as well as the classic plate theory and the first-order plate theory. Thus, the analysis can be conducted based on any of the above-mentioned theories. The selection of a specific method is done by simply changing a few terms in a 2 by 2 square matrix and the results, obtained according to different plate theories, can be compared to each other. Numerical examples are presented for piezoelectric composite plates subjected to mechanical loading. The results based on different shear deformation theories are compared with the three-dimensional solutions. The behaviours of piezoelectric composite plates with different length-to-thickness ratios, fibre orientations, and boundary conditions are also investigated in these examples.

  • Laminate Design of a composite tube for a space telescope(Fig. 1) under hygrothermal load is studied. Carpet plots for laminate effective engineering constants are generated and used for selecting the best tube lay-ups satisfying the optomechanical requirements for a space telescope being dimensional1y stable under orbital thermal loading. Despace of the tubes constructed with the selected lay-ups are calculated with a Zig-Zag Triangular Element which accurately represents through thickness stress variations for laminated structures. The effects of moisture absorption when exposed to humidity environment and moisture desorption through outgassing on the dimensional stability are also investigated.

  • A problem formulation and solution for design optimization of laminated composite channel section beam is presented in this study. The objective of this study is the determination of optimum section dimensions of composite laminated channel section beam which has equivalent flexural rigidities to flexural rigidities of steel channel section beam. The analytical model is based on the laminate theory and accounts for the material coupling for arbitrary laminate stacking sequence configuration. The model is used to determine the optimal section dimensions of composite channel section beam. The web height, flange width and thickness of the beam are treated as design variables. The solutions described are found using a global search algorithm, Genetic Algorithms (GA).

  • In this study, the behavior of R/C beam strengthened with carbon fiber laminate (C.F.L.) is analyzed from the test results. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the shearing rehabilitation effects of R/C beam with C.F.L. Test parameters are the thickness of C.F.L. and existence of stirrups. Test results how that the shear capacity of specimen without stirrups was increased and shear capacity of specimen with stirrups was not increased due to the insufficient fabrication of specimen and curing.

The failure mode and ultimate load are analyzed from these measured data. Test results shows that the peak load of specimens strengthened with C.F.L. is increased to 1.27~2.04 times of that of non-rehabilitation specimen. The wider lap width, large amount of rehabilitation materials, the larger strength is obtained.

  • The theory with hierarchical warping functions had been used to analyze composite thin-walled structure, laminated beam and had good results. In the present paper, a series of hierarchical warping functions are developed to analyze the cylindrical bending problems of composite lamina. These warping functions which refine through-the-thickness variation of displacements were composed of basic and corrective functions by taking into account of anisotropic, material discontinues, and transverse shear and normal strain. Then the hierarchical finite element method was used to form a numerical algorithm. The distribution of the displacements, in-plane stresses, transverse shear stresses and transverse normal stress for composite laminate were analyzed with the present model. The results show that the present model has precise mechanical response compared with the first deformation transverse theory and the corrective order affects the accuracy of result.

  • The present study is concerned with the stochastic linear free vibration study of laminated composite plate embedded with piezoelectric layers with random material properties. The system equations are derived using higher order shear deformation theory. The lamina material properties of the laminate are modeled as basic random variables for accurate prediction of the system behavior. A $C^0$ finite element is used for spatial descretization of the laminate. First order Taylor series based mean centered perturbation technique in conjunction with finite element method is outlined for the problem. The outlined probabilistic approach is used to obtain typical numerical results, i.e., the mean and standard deviation of natural frequency. Different combinations of simply supported, clamped and free boundary conditions are considered. The effect of side to thickness ratio, aspect ratio, lamination scheme on scattering of natural frequency is studied. The results are compared with those available in literature and an independent Monte Carlo simulation.
