Water quality of the Lake Youngrang in the Sokcho City is eutrophic. Jangcheon is the largest inflow source to the lake. Major pollutant sources are stormwater runoff from resort areas and various land uses in the Jangcheon watershed. A storm sewer on the southern end of the lake is also an important pollution source. In this study, water quality modelling for Lake Youngrang was carried out considering the rainfall-runoff pollution loads from the watershed. The rainfall-runoff curves and the rainfall-runoff pollutant load curves were derived from the rainfall-runoff survey data during the recent 4 years. The rainfall-runoff pollution loads and flow from the Jangcheon watershed and the storm sewer were estimated using the two kinds of curves, and they were used as the flow and the boundary data of the WASP model. With the measured water quality data of the year 2005 and 2006, WASP model was calibrated. Non-point pollution control measures such as wet pond and infiltration trench were considered as the alternative for water quality management of the lake. The predicted water quality were compared with those under the present condition, and the improvement effect of the lake water quality were analyzed.
The characteristics of Lake Cheonhoji water and sediment were investigated in oder to utilize these as fundamental materials for the management of lake water quality. The hydrographic properties of Lake Cheonhoji which are relatively low chance of nutrients loading from the watershed and a long retention time of lake water, lead to the probability of high lake productivity. It was also observed that lake water showed stratification during summer and complete mixing during fall, even though water depth was relatively shallow. The trophic state was eutrophic to hypertrophic from summer to late fall. The overall properties of the sediment were oligohumic, high ignition loss and high composition of NAIP and Resid.-P, which might serve as potential pollution sources of lake water quality. In laboratory scale experiments, it was observed that leaching potential of nutrients in the sediment was greatly dependant upon water temperature and dissolved oxygen. Finally, water pollution in Lake Cheonhoji was considered to be largely due to the adverse cycle of uncontrollable eutrophication, which resulted in the subsequent occurrence of dead algae and animal plankton, organic sedimentation, reduction of dissolved oxygen and nutrients leaching, which again reinforced the cycle of eutrophication in the lake.
A year-long survey of bacteriological water quality for Lake Eui-am in Kang- won Province, Korea, was conducted from June 1970 to May 1971. the purpose of this investigation was: 1) to determinate the seasonal prevalence of fecal pllution bacteria, such as coliforms, fecal coliforms and enterococci, in Lake Eui-am; 2) to correlate these findings with associated microbiological parameters; and 3) to interpret these results with respect to water quality and environmental health. The membrane filter techniques were used, for the determination of these bacteria.Densities of total coliforms, fecal coliforms and enterococci exhibited seasonal variations, the numers of these fecal pollution bacteria being high in summer and fall months in close possitive relation to the amount of rainfall, and being low winter and spring months. On the whole, the level of fecal pollution bacteria in Lake Eui-am is yet quite low There were not any evident correlation among the density of these pollution bacteria. The ratio of fecal coliforms to enterococci of the lake water varied from 0.01 to 4.25 with average of 1.47.

Baiyangdian Lake, the largest freshwater lake in North China, is known as 'Pearl of North China' and 'kidney of North China' fur its abundant products and multiple ecological services. However, from the 1970s, due to the ever-increasing discharge of polluted water from upstream rivers, it has been severely polluted. Sediment Investigation and analysis were conducted on contents of heavy metal (Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) from Baiyangdian Lake in June 2004. Results showed that pollution situation at downriver regions are more serious than that of upstream regions. The seriously polluted spots are access of Fuhe River, original wastewater reservoir of Tanghe River, densely populated Chunshui Village and Wangjiazhai Village. By using method of the potential ecological risk assessment, the heavy metal evaluation of polluted sediment has been conducted. The results showed that the contents of Cd and Pb were very high in sediment of Baiyangdian Lake. There were extremely stronger ecological risk for Cd and slight- medium ecological risk for Pd. According to the current situation of Baiyangdian Lake, countermeasures and suggestions have been put forward.

The long-term monitoring of the Soyang Lake's water quality, covering 25% of the North Han River watershed, is crucial for effective management of both lake water quality and pollution sources in the broader region. This study utilized continuous monitoring data from the front of the Soyang Dam spanning 2003 to 2022, aiming to analyze trends and provide foundational insights for water quality management. Results revealed a slightly poor grade (IV) for total nitrogen (T-N) in both surface and mid-depth layers, indicating a need for concentrated T-N management. Trend analyses using the Mann-Kendall test and Sen's Slope depicted a decreasing trend in total phosphorus (T-P) for both layers, attributed to non-point source pollution reduction projects initiated after the Soyang Lake's designation as a pollution control area in 2007. The LOWESS analysis showed a T-P increase until 2006, followed by a decrease, influenced by the impact of Typhoon Ewiniar in that year. This 20-year overview establishes a comprehensive understanding of the Soyang Lake's water quality and trends, allowing for a seasonal and periodical analysis of water quality changes. The findings underscore the importance of continued monitoring and management strategies to address evolving water quality issues in the Soyang Lake over time.
BACKGROUND: Most lakes have increased concerns about water pollution due to the inflow of non-point sources caused by human activities. Therefore, the lake water quality survey was conducted in order to propose effective plans for water quality management by analyzing the characteristics of lakes and the change of water quality. METHODS AND RESULTS: In order to investigate the physicochemical water quality in Daedong lake, water quality analysis was undertaken from July 2018 to June 2019. Water temperature was ranged from 7.8 to 34.3℃ and pH varied from 6.9 to 10.2. The concentration of Dissolved oxygen, Suspended solid, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) were 5.6 ~ 17.2 mg/L, 2.4 ~ 35.3 mg/L, and 4.5 ~ 15.1 mg/L, and 0.9 ~ 2.8 mg/L, respectively. The Total Nitrogen (T-N) concentration ranged from 0.974 ~ 2.126 mg/L, and Total Phosphorus (T-P) concentration ranged from 0.014 ~ 0.057 mg/L. The Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) ranged from 2.7 ~ 37.9 mg/㎥. Through Carlson TSIm assessment using T-P and Chl-a results, evaluating trophic state, Daedong lake was evaluated as mesotrophic. CONCLUSION: Water pollution management plan needs such as nutrient removal technology and nonpoint source management for prevention of eutrophication in Daedong lake.
Agriculture reservoirs need a systematic approach that can control water purity and water improvement. The area under study, Bunam Lake exceeds the agricultural water standard level due to contamination from the upper stream. When the Taean Enterprise City was planned, the water quality improvement plan was applied to minimize the environmental change. However, in order to continuously maintain the water quality in the Bunam Lake, it was essential to apply the Total Pollution Load Management System (TPLMs). In order to achieve the targeted water quality in the Bunam Lake, standard flow rates and targeted water quality levels were applied to obtain the loading capacity which is as follows : BOD 1,891.2 kg/d, T-N 1,945.7 kg/d, T-P 131.7 kg/d. Also, the regional development load was calculated as, BOD 1,083.6 kg/d, T-N 942.2 kg/d, T-P 61.8 kg/d, which is required to be deceased :- by BOD 378.4 kg/d, T-N 198.9 kg/d, T-P 31.6 kg/d in order to safely achieve the targeted water quality in the Bunam Lake.

Total phosphorus was set as a target indicator to prevent eutrophication and algae growth, etc., in three major rivers (Nakdong River, Geum River and Yeongsang/Seomjin River) for the second phase (2011 ~ 2015) in total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) system. However, total phosphorus management was restrictively introduced, i.e., upstream of the Lake Daechung, in the Geum River watershed. Total phosphorus concentration and trophic levels in downstream of the Lake Daechung (include Mangyeong and Dongjin rivers) were increased more than upstream. Therefore, it is necessary to expand total phosphorus management in all watersheds of the Geum River. If total phosphorus was managed in all area of the Geum River watershed, it is possible to decrease total phosphorus concentration and trophic levels, and solve the unbalanced water quality between up and downstream of the Lake Daechung.
For estimating discharge and pollution loads into the Yeongsan lake, a conceptual watershed model HSPF(Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran) was applied to the Yeongsan River Basin. Various spatial data set including DEM, watershed boundaries and land uses were used to set up the model for the Yeongsan River Basin that was divided into 45 sub-basins. The model was calibrated and validated for the river discharges, SS, BOD, TN and TP concentrations against the data observed in 2011 at several monitoring stations. The simulation results show good agreement with the observed water flows($R^2$ = 0.46 - 0.97, NSE = 0.70 - 0.96). The simulated concentrations of SS, BOD, TN and TP are also in good agreement with the observed. The total freshwater discharge to the Yeongsan lake is estimated $2,406{\times}10^6m^3/year$ which the Jiseok and Hwangryoung stream contribute as much as 19%, 17% respectively. It is estimated that the total discharges to the Youngsan lake is SS 152,327 ton/year, BOD 15,721 ton/year, TN 10,071 ton/year, TP 563 ton/year. Both water and pollution loads are high in summer, particularly in July, when the monsoon season arrives at the Korean peninsula.

A monitoring study has been conducted to identify hydrologic conditions, water quality and nutrient loading characteristics of small watershed in Juam Lake. Climate data of the watershed were collected; flow rate was measured and water quality sampling was conducted at the watershed outlet for this study. Water quality data revealed that T-P concentrations meet I grade of lake water quality standard during non-storm period, but degraded up to II-III grade of lake water quality standard during storm period. The observed T-N concentrations always exceeded lake water quality standard. Therefore, T-P was identified as limiting chemical constituent for eutrophication of Juam Lake. T-P concentration of non-storm period also revealed that point source pollution is not serious in the watershed. Three year monitoring results showed that the observed T-N losses were $10.85\~18.88$ kg/ha and T-P losses were $0.028\~0.323$ kg/ha during six month (Mar. - Oct.), respectively. Major portion of runoff amount discharged by a few storm events a year and nutrient load showed apparent seasonal variation. Huge runoff amounts were generated by intense storms, which make application of water treatment or detention facilities ineffective. Monitoring results confirmed that water quality improvement by abating nonpoint source pollution in rural watershed of monsoon climate should be focused on source control. T-P losses from paddy field seemed to consist of significant amount of total load from study watershed. Therefore, management of drainage from paddy field is considered to be important for preventing algal blooming problem in Juam Lake.
