The Vertical Distribution of Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) by Florescence In Situ Hybridization in Sediments of Lakes in Korea and China

  • The vertical distributions of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) in sediments of lakes in Korea (Lake Sihwa and Lake Soyang) and China (Lake Aha and Lake Erhai) were investigated by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). SRB from sediment of Lakes of China were located to deeper layer than those in Lakes of Korea. SRB were not detected below 19 cm and 10 cm depth in sediments of Lake Sihwa and Lake Soyang, respectively. SRB numbers were, however, detected at all observed sediments in Lake Aha and Lake Erhai. In case of lakes in Korea, the proportion of SRB ranged from 2.9 to 25.6% (Lake Sihwa) and ranged from 0.6 to 7.1% (Lake Soyang). For lakes in China, the proportions of SRB were from 0.6 to 19.4% and from 2.9 to 11.2% within sediments from Lake Aha and from Lake Erhai, respectively. The high peaks of SRB numbers in sediments of all lakes were appearing at depths between 0 cm and 2 cm.

소양호에서 외부기원유기물의 유입, 유출 특성 (Characteristics of Allochthonous Organic Matter in Large Dam Reservoir, Lake Soyang)

  • To identify the inflow and outflow characteristics of allchthonous organic matters and examine the change of allochthonous organic matter load pattern due to the climate change, we investigated the temporal variations of DOC and POC concentrations within inflow water and dam discharge water and spatio-temporal distribution of POM within the lake water in Lake Soyang which is the largest dam reservoir in Korea in 2006. Most of allochthonous DOC flowed into the lake water during initial rain and was not affected by the amount of precipitation, whereas most of allochthonous POC flowed into during concentrated heavy rain and the concentration of POC was significantly associated with the amount of inflow water and precipitation. Calculated annual allochthonous organic matter loads in Lake Soyang from 2003 to 2006 using the regression equation between the amount of inflow water and the concentration of POC indicate allochthonous organic matter loads are mainly affected by total influx and extreme influx of inflow water. The spatio-temporal distribution of POM indicated allochthonous organic matter of inflow river during flood period in July transported from upper part to middle and lower part of the lake a month later respectively along the middle layer of water column in Lake Soyang.

계절 Mann-Kendall 검정을 이용한 소양호의 장기 수질 경향성 분석 (Long-Term Water Quality Trend Analysis of Lake Soyang Using Seasonal Mann-Kendall Test)

  • The long-term monitoring of the Soyang Lake's water quality, covering 25% of the North Han River watershed, is crucial for effective management of both lake water quality and pollution sources in the broader region. This study utilized continuous monitoring data from the front of the Soyang Dam spanning 2003 to 2022, aiming to analyze trends and provide foundational insights for water quality management. Results revealed a slightly poor grade (IV) for total nitrogen (T-N) in both surface and mid-depth layers, indicating a need for concentrated T-N management. Trend analyses using the Mann-Kendall test and Sen's Slope depicted a decreasing trend in total phosphorus (T-P) for both layers, attributed to non-point source pollution reduction projects initiated after the Soyang Lake's designation as a pollution control area in 2007. The LOWESS analysis showed a T-P increase until 2006, followed by a decrease, influenced by the impact of Typhoon Ewiniar in that year. This 20-year overview establishes a comprehensive understanding of the Soyang Lake's water quality and trends, allowing for a seasonal and periodical analysis of water quality changes. The findings underscore the importance of continued monitoring and management strategies to address evolving water quality issues in the Soyang Lake over time.

소양호 세균 군집의 계절적 분석 (Seasonal analysis of heterotrophic bacterial community in lake Soyang)

  • The numerical taxonomy of heterotrophic bacterial community in Lake Soyang was analysed. 95, 115, 88 and 75 strains which were isolated at each season from spring in 1987 to winter in 1988 were clustered by single matching coefficient. The diversity indices (H') were in the range of 0.511-1.684, and the community was most diverse in spring. THe seasonal variation of generic composition was significant. Of the domonant genera, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Flavobacterium were representative.

Pollutant Flux Releases During Summer Monsoon Period based on Hydrological Modeling in Two Forested Watersheds, Soyang Lake

  • In this study, specific pollutant releases during the Asian monsoon season were estimated and the information was applied to the non-point pollutant sources management from two forested watersheds of the Soyang Lake. The two watersheds are part of the 2,703 km2 Soyang Lake watershed in the northern region of the Han River. The outlets of the two watersheds were respectively analyzed for continuous water quality concentration and for discharge during various single rainfall events. Statistical power function methods are utilized to compare stream discharge and pollutant flux release during the study period. Based on the monitoring data during the study period, the specific load flux method using simulated discharge was conducted and validated in the two watersheds. The model predictions corresponded well with the measured and calculated pollutant releases. The modeling approach taken in this study was found to be applicable for the two forested watersheds.

  • The Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) has suggested that spatial and spectral characteristics would be suited to evaluate water quality of lake. But, TM has not been commonly used for the analysis of in-land water quality, such as surface water temperature, chlorophyll-a, suspended sediments, and Secchi depth in domestic research. This paper summarizes the analysis of Landsat 5 - TM image collected on 22 Feb 1996 for evaluation of chlorophyll-a and surface temperature in the Lake Soyang. And, field measurements collected in the Lake Soyang were used to obtain water optical algorithms for calibration of satellite data. It is concluded that we can assess chlorophyll-a with remote sensing reflectance and surface temperature with thermal band in lake Soyang. However, surface temperature calculated with thermal band of Landsat TM are underestimated. Relationship between remote sensing reflectance and chlorophyll-a using the ratio of TM band 1 and band 3 is as follows; Y = 17.206 - 6.4711 * (Rrs(band1) / Rrs(band3)) $R^2$=0.8762 and, using the ratio of TM band 1 and band 2 as follows; Y = 57.77 - 35.771 * (Rrs(band1) / Rrs(band2)) $R^2$=0.8317.

소양호 동물플랑크톤 군집의 장기변동과 환경요인: 2003~2014 (Long Term Variations and Environment Factors of Zooplankton Community in Lake Soyang)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 소양호 동물플랑크톤 군집의 장기적인 변동을 관찰하고 환경요인에 따른 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 조사기간 동안 소양호 유역 강수량은 $705{\sim}1,779mm\;yr^{-1}$의 큰 변동을 보였으며, 이로 인한 호소의 수위변동과 함께 여름철 많은 양의 탁수가 유입되는 것으로 나타났다. 소양호 수질은 몬순기후로 인한 여름철 홍수기 탁수유입이 가장 중요한 환경요인으로 작용하였으며, 계절적 변화가 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 장기간 동안 소양호 동물플랑크톤 군집의 현존량은 2006년을 기준으로 이전과 이후로 뚜렷한 차이를 보였으며, 강우 이후 동물플랑크톤의 현존량이 급격히 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 소양호에서 동물플랑크톤은 1차적으로 이화학적 환경요인과 양의 상관성을 보였으며, 강우 시 유입된 높은 농도의 인과 유기물 증가가 동물플랑크톤 성장에 영향을 미친 것으로 판단되었다. 그러나 소양호에서 동물플랑크톤 군집의 변동은 이화학적 환경요인으로만 설명하는 데는 한계가 있었으며, 동물플랑크톤의 생물량 증가를 먹이망 내에서 top-down과 bottom-up 효과로 설명할 수 있었다. 결과적으로 소양호 동물플랑크톤의 생물량과 군집구조는 탁수유입에 따른 영양염과 유기물 공급, 식물플랑크톤 현존량 및 종 조성 그리고 동물플랑크톤 상호작용이 주요한 결정요인으로 작용한 것으로 판단되었다.

Distribution and activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria in lake soyang sediments

  • In order to known the extend of contribution to the degradation of organic materials and nutrient recycling by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and methane-producing bacteria (MPB) in sediment, the distribution and activity of these two groups of microorganisms were studied montly in 1994 at two sites, one littoral (Sanggulri) and the other profunndal (DAM), in Lake Soyang. In the seasonal distribution of two microorganisms, SRB were 1.07 $\times$ 10$^{3}$-2.42 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ cells/g-dry weight at Sanggulri, 2.40 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ -1.29 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ at Dam and MPB were 0.52 $\times$ 10$^{3}$ cells/g-dry weight at Sangguri and 1.44 $\times$ 10$^{3}$-6.89 $\times$ 10$^{3}$ at Dam. In these results, the density of SRB in Lake Soyang is much higher than other lakes. These high values might be due to higher sulfate concentration, 0.69-4.05 mM, than normal freshwater, 0.01-1.2 mM. And a good correlation of SRB and chlorophyll a concentration implied that the important environmental factor on distribution of SRB might be the concentration of available organic matter. In a comparison of sulfate-reducing rate and methane producing rate in 1995, the activity of SRB for the degradation of organic matter was higher than MPB by factor of 359. Conclusively SRB superior to MPB in the distribution and activity are more important annearobic bacteria in Lake Soyang sediments.
