  • This study reviews and analyses the policy changes happened in Britain regarding the family and children. Traditionally Britain has employed non-interventionist policies for the family and child care assuming the family as a private domain. This policy had been reinforced during the Thatcher regime. However the traditional families that Beveridge had idealized have been rapidly disappearing and child poverty has become critical concern for Blair's New Labour government with the rising number of lone parent families. The New labour's child and family-friendly policies to enhance the family life have been examined on the basis of government reports on Child Benefit, WFTC, Child Support Agency and the plans to support parents and to implement the child and family-friendly practices.

  • Child labour is a disturbing issue for any society. It is attempted here in this article to develop an estimator to assess the numerical strength of this menace in Lahore division. A Horvitz and Thompson (1952) type of estimator is developed where weights are calculated on the basis of poverty and illiteracy to increase the sampling efficiency. Different characteristic features of this estimator, like its unbiasedness, variance, probability distribution, confidence intervals are also developed for its study from different angles.

  • In this study the financial performance of small scale dairy farms participating in the government subsidy programme and the impact of this government intervention on the number of animals owned, production and consumption of milk and labour employment in the farm households have been examined. After receiving the subsidy, dairy farmers expanded their herd size. The major changes occurred in the ownership of calves, heifers and cows in all categories of farms. Significant increases in production and consumption of milk as well as in labour employment were observed. The rates of increase for all the parameters studied were much higher in farms adopting cross breeding compared to those in only local-breed farms. The analysis showed that dairying was a profitable business. However, profitability was greater with cross-bred than with local-bred animals.

  • This study investigates how dramatic increase of university and college graduates affects labor market outcomes. Using a series of seven repeated cross sections of the Vietnam Household Living Standards Surveys, this paper analyzed the changes in the rate of returns to higher education attainment along with the increased supply of university and college graduates due to the higher education expansion throughout the 2002-2014 period. The study utilized a ratio of number of university and college students to the number of upper-secondary pupils within each province as an instrumental variable to calculate the effects of higher education expansion on the labor wage. The study found that, with the basic equations, the coefficients for higher education attainment are statistically significant and have positive values for the whole period. Our instrumental variables were found to be valid. For instrumental variable estimation, the return to higher education in IV earning equations was quite high. The findings of this study suggested that the expansion of the higher education system in Vietnam during 2002-2014 had positive effects on wages for those who increased their education attainment due to the reforms and there was a declining trend of the returns to higher education toward the end of the period.
