A storage mite, Tyrophcgus putrescentiae, is recently known to be widely distributed in Korea, being commonly found in house dust, and may, therefore, be allergenically important. The purpose of this study was to develop mass rearing techniques for supplying a large quantity of allergens. The laboratory mouse food powder gave the highest yield, showing 1,251.5-fold increase in number after 10 weeks, and the mixed powder of laboratory mouse food and yeast (1 : 1) also gave same level of the production (1.203 1-fold increase in week 10). Several different combinations of temperature and relative humidity conditions were compared, and the maximum propagation was obtained at $25^{\circ}C$ and 64% RH, showing 960-fold increase in number. When the same amount of culture media was used the size of the culture container did not significantly influence the quantitative yield of T. putrescentice mites.
This study was conducted to detect the serum antibody of toxoplasma in swine from breeding-pig, rearing-pig farm and slaughtered pig in abattior by latex agglutination(LA) test. The perfomance of LA test was carried out with commercial Toxo-MT kit(Eiken Chemical Co.)by Tsubota and Ozawa's method. The cut-off titer of positive and negative reactions by Toxo-MT antigen used in this experiment was determined as the serum titer of 1 : 32. Positive rate of toxoplasma antibody from the total of 823 serum samples by LA test was 17.0%(140 cases). And positive rates of toxoplasma antibody against serum samples of 194 from breeding-pig farm, 273 from rearing-pig farm and 356 from abattior were 91 cases(46. 9%), 23 cases(8.4%) and 26 cases(7.3%), respectively. The distributions of serum antibody titers in 823 test sera by LA test were shown 51 cases(36.3%) in 1:32, 40(28.6%) in 1:64, 17(12.1%) in 1:128, 14(10.0%) in 1:256, 3(2.1%) in 1:512, 5(3.6%) in 1:1024 and 3(2.1%) in 1:2048. The ranges of positive rate from the sera in each group of breeding-pig farms were 20~61.9%.
While use of mass rearing systems improved poultry production, chances of exposing to contagious diseases have been increased, making flocks more vulnerable to diseases. Diseases of interest which affects egg production adversely include Low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI), Infectious bronchitis (IB), Avian meta-pneumoviral infection (aMPV) and Egg drop syndrome'76 (EDS'76). This report collected and analyzed 5,385 serum samples, which were collected from 1,330 different chicken flock, provided by Chungbuk National University, Avian Disease Laboratory at 2009. Serums were analyzed based on rearing stages; 0~1.3weeks (wks) (maternal antibody period), >1.3~3 wks (starting period), >3~10 wks (growing period), >10~22 wks (developing period), >22~40 wks (peak laying period), >40~60 wks (late laying period) and over 60 wks (post-molting period). Results showed the 99.7% of the tested flocks were immunized against ND and73.8%, 97.1%, 78,2% and 78% of the flocks were immunized against other 4 agents (LPAI, IB, EDS'76, aMPV). Maternal antibody was transferred to enough quantity for NDV. Generally, antibody titers which were developed at 22 weeks were stabilized permanently for life. In case of IB and aMPV, infection titer emerged as early as 10 weeks and the titer was increased from 99.4% to 100% for life. EDS76 showed increase in titers, reflecting decreased frequency of vaccination programs. Overall, this study displayed general trends of major viral disease in layers, but considering the trend of development of preventive measures and evolution of pathogens, conducting serological surveys on a regular basis is important.
A Quarantine Pest Research Facility (QPRF) had been build in Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency and designed to ensure alien pests are safety contained inside the laboratory. Functions of QPRF including insect rearing, research, and physical containment facility were verified to check suitability as a research laboratory using the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua. As insect rearing and laboratory facility, S. exigua completed its development for 32.2 days at 25℃. Egg hatching, pupation, and adult eclosion showed 80, 86.6, and 90%. Two pesticides, fluxametamide and hydramethylnon showed high susceptibility against S. exigua larvae by spraying and dipping methods. As physical containment facility, male adults, which were artificially released from laboratory, did not capture in delta trap installed sex pheromone lure during winter season. Based on these results, QPRF will be used for study on alien insect species.

Treatment of mice with 0.04% anthranilic acid (AnA) as drinking water resulted in an apparent stimulation of pup's growth and food intake of mothers in their first lactations associated with an increased rearing rate and no alteration in plasma prolactin level. AnA showed no significant effects on the day of vaginal opening, the pattern of estrous cycles, plasma growth hormone level and endocrine organ weights of the female and male offspring. The growth of male offspring was significantly retarded by AnA, however, their reproductivity was quite normal. The results indicate the AnA can simulate lactation of mice through little modulation of endocrine systems.

This paper reports a simple rearing system for Cnaphalocrocis medinalis based on corn seedlings diet. C. medinalis population under this system has been maintained by four stages (egg, young larva-1st to 3rd instar, old larva-4th to prepupa, 3nd adult) at $25{\pm}2^{\circ}C,\;40{\pm}10%$ RH, 3nd 16L:8D photoperiod in a laboratory. We have elaborated a new egg collection method using a polystyrene container $(top\;{\phi}11.3\;{\times}\;bottom\;{\phi}\;{\times}\;H8cm)$ which has made a great contribution in easy collection of eggs and storage of them for long period. Under this system, pupation and adult emergence rate, and pupal weight of C. medinalis population were close to the other reports by com seedling diet, and superior to those by artificial diets. Therefore, this rearing system would be useful in obtaining C. medinalsis population suitable to each specific needs.

Eggs, immature eggs, and pupae of 8 different insects (Halyomopha halys, Riptortus pedestris, Lymantria dispar, Antheraea yamamai, Verlarifictorus spp, Antheraea pernyi, and Musca domestica) including Lycorma delicatura were used to select the alternative host for laboratory mass rearing of A. orientalis. Except L. delicatula's eggs and immature eggs of A. pernyi, other 7 tested insects were not parasitized by A. orientalis. A. pernyi was reared with oak tree leaves and its cocoons were harvested on mid-July and early October. On 4 or 5 days after emergence, only female adults showing swollen abdomen were collected and stored at $1{\sim}5^{\circ}C$. We could get 150~200 eggs per one female by dissecting the female's abdomen. For examining the possibility for laboratory mass rearing of A. orientalis with A. pernyi's immature eggs, developmental periods from egg to pupa between the two different hosts were compared. Developmental periods were 36.1 days on immature eggs of A. pernyi and 36.8 days on an original host's eggs, respectively. The number of parasitized eggs by A. orientalis' female for 24 h was 3.4 on immature eggs of A. pernyi and 4.2 on an original host's eggs, respectively. However, there were no significant statistical differences in developmental period and parasitization between the two hosts. By supplying honeyed water to newly emerged female parasitoids, it was able to maximize their longevities up to 64.3 days after emergence. Therefore, our results support potential for laboratory mass-rearing of A. orientalis using A. pernyi's immature eggs as an alternative host.

Objective: Cage rearing has critical implications for the laying duck industry because it is convenient for feeding and management. However, caging stress is a type of chronic stress that induces maladaptation. Environmental stress responses have been extensively studied, but no detailed information is available about the comprehensive changes in plasma metabolites at different stages of caging stress in ducks. We designed this experiment to analyze the effects of caging stress on performance parameters and oxidative stress indexes in ducks. Methods: Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) was used to determine the changes in metabolites in duck plasma at 5 (CR5), 10 (CR10), and 15 (CR15) days after cage rearing and traditional breeding (TB). The associated pathways of differentially altered metabolites were analyzed using Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) database. Results: The results of this study indicate that caging stress decreased performance parameters, and the plasma total superoxide dismutase levels were increased in the CR10 group compared with the other groups. In addition, 1,431 metabolites were detected. Compared with the TB group, 134, 381, and 190 differentially produced metabolites were identified in the CR5, CR10, and CR15 groups, respectively. The results of principal component analysis (PCA) show that the selected components sufficiently distinguish the TB group and CR10 group. KEGG analysis results revealed that the differentially altered metabolites in duck plasma from the CR5 and TB groups were mainly associated with ovarian steroidogenesis, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, and phenylalanine metabolism. Conclusion: In this study, the production performance, blood indexes, number of metabolites and PCA were compared to determine effect of the caging stress stage on ducks. We inferred from the experimental results that caging-stressed ducks were in the sensitive phase in the first 5 days after caging, caging for approximately 10 days was an important transition phase, and then the duck continually adapted.
To find out suitable indoor rearing tank shape and stocking density of the abalone Haliotis discus hannai, young abalones were reared in the square or ellipse shape tanks with various stocking densities and were fed dried sea mustard, Undaria Pinnatifida HARVEY for three years. There were no significant differences between the square rearing tank and the ellipse one in growth rate and survival rate. With regard to vertical design of rearing tanks with three floors, the significant differences were not found among culture floors. However, the growth and survival rates of young abalones from the running water system were significantly higher than those of the abalones from the circulating system (P< 0.05). For the stocking density experiment with 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 individuals of 20 mm young abalone, there was no significant differences in growth and survival rates among these groups. However, in that of 200-400 individuals of 40 mm abalone and 100-300 individuals of 50 mm abalone, the lower stocking density of young abalone showed the higher growth and survival rates. The lower stocking density and the smaller size of young abalones showed the higher daily feeding rate and feed efficiency.
To find out an alternative prey of Orius strigicollis Poppius in the laboratory continuous rearing system, cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii), two spotted spider mite (Tetmnychus urticae) and mold mite (Tyrophagus putrescenriae) were tested as alternative prey. Development and oviposition of 0. strigicollis were observed at 25f l0C, RH 60-80% and 16L:8D. Survival rate and developmental period of the nymphal stages of 0. strigicollis was 81. 6% and 11.6 days when fed on cotton aphid, 56.796, 14.6 days, 42.3% and 16.5 days when fed on two spotted spider mite and mold mite, respectively. Total oviposition of 0. strigicollis was 68.5 eggslfemaie fed on cotton aphid, 46.1 and 26.5 eggsifemale fed on two spotted spider mite and mold mite, respectively. Cotton aphid seems to be most suitable prey for rearing 0 . strigicollis among the three prey species tested.
