  • The object of this study is to get the superior double hull structure to its crashworthiness against collision comparing absorbed energy capacities of its various types with each other, varying material properties, collision positions and velocities, and structural arrangements such as double hull width, web and stringer spaces, etc. Local absorbed energy capacities, failure behaviors and damage extents of their members are also considered during collision in addition to the estimations of their global ones. This paper describes a series of numerical simulations of collisions between DWT 45,000 oil tanker(struck ship) and DWT 10,500 rigid one(striking ships) using Hydrocode LS/DYNA3D. Collisions are assumed to occur at the middle of struck ship with striking one moving at right angle to its centerline. The following remarks were obtained through this study: More flexible the double hull structure is, much superior its crashworthiness against collision is. The increment of double hull width does not give much influence than other factors do. The exact use of material property such as failure strain is also important on the numerical simulation of collision.

  • Today deep drawing and ironing are the major process in manufacturing of battery case used in cellular phone from aluminum. The same technology is utilized in manufacturing of steel or aluminum cans for components of medical instrument, portable PC, walkman and so on. Most of these processes require multi-stage ironing following the deep drawing and redrawing processes. The practical aspects of this technology are well known and gained through extensive experiment and production know-how. However, the fundamental aspects of theses processes are relatively less known. Thus, it is expected that process simulations using FEM techniques would provide additional detailed information that could be utilized to improve the process condition. This paper illustrates the application of process modeling to deep drawing and redrawing operations for High Precision Rectangular Battery Case. A commercially avaliable finite element code LS-DYNA3D was used to simulate deep drawing and redrawing operations.

To verify the simulation results, the experimental investigations were also carried out on a real industrial product. The numerical analysis by FEM shows good agreement with the experimental results in view of the deformation shape of the product. • Structural integrity of either a passenger car or a light truck is one of the basic requirements for a full vehicle engineering and development program. The results of the vehicle product performance are measured in terms of ride and handling, durability, noise/vibration/harshness (NVH), crashworthiness and occupant safety. The level of performance of a vehicle directly affects the marketability, profitability and, most importantly, the future of the automobile manufacturer In this study, we used the virtual proving ground (VPG) approach for obtaining the dynamic characteristics. The VPG approach uses a nonlinear dynamic finite element code (LS-DYNA3D) which expands the application boundary outside the classic linear static assumptions. The VPG approach also uses realistic boundary conditions of tire/road surface interactions. To verify the predicted dynamic results, a single lane change test has been performed. The prediction results were compared with the experimental results, and the feasibility of the integrated CAE analysis methodology was verified.

  • This paper deals with an analysis and countermeasure for improving the shock performance of laptop computers. The shock analysis is carried out by using the commercial program of LS-DYNA3D. Also the analysis is verified by the measurements from modal tests and shock tests. The available countermeasures are investigated theoretically and experimentally to find the effective methods of reducing the shock acceleration on hard disk driver during one side fall test. The hard disk drive is the most sensitive part in a laptop computer. This research shows the effects of the spring constant of rubber pad, the reinforcement of mechanical parts and the location of a hard disk driver, on the shock reduction.

  • Maglev vehicles, which are levitated and propelled by electromagnets, often run on elevated flexible guideways comprised of steel, aluminum and concrete. Therefore, an analysis of the dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the flexible guideway is needed in the design of the critical speed, ride, controller design and weight reduction of the vehicle. This study introduces a dynamic interaction simulation technique that applies structural dynamics. Because the proposed method uses detailed 3D FE models, it is useful to analyze the deformation of the elevated flexible guideway, the dynamic stress, and the motion of the vehicle. By applying the proposed method to an urban transit Maglev vehicle, UTM01, the dynamic response is simulated and validated. From the result of the study, we concluded that the simulation of dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the flexible guideway is possible and a potential of using computational mechanics.

  • Recently, the pedestrian protection regulations of Europe and Japan are becoming more stringent. However, it is difficult to evaluate the performance of protection because each regulation has different test conditions such as dummy, impact speed and so on. In this study, we construct a finite element model of pedestrian lower legform impactor prescribed in EEVC (European Experimental Vehicle Committee) W/G 10, and performed a impact analysis between the impactor and the front end module of vehicle. The simulations are carried out by using LS-DYNA3D, which is a well-known nonlinear dynamic simulation software. The analysis results according to various impact location show the impact characteristics of the lower legform.

  • In recent years, the structural shock response to underwater explosion has been studied as much, or more, through numerical simulations than through testing for several reasons. Very high costs and sensitive environmental concerns have kept destructive underwater explosion testing to a minimum. Increase of simulation capabilities and sophisticated simulation tools has made numerical simulations more efficient analysis methods as well as more reliable testing aids. For the simulation of underwater explosions against, surface ships or submerged structures one has to include the effects of the explosive shock wave, the motion of the gaseous reactive products, the local cavitation collapse, the different nonlinear structural properties and the complex fluid-structure interaction phenomena. In this study, as benchmark step for the validation of hydrocode LS/DYNA3D and of technology of fluid-structure interaction problems, two kinds of cavitation problems are analyzed and structural shock response of floating ship model are compared with experimental result.

  • The hat shaped section members, spot welded strength resisting structures are the most energy absorbing ones of automobile components during the front-end collision. Under the static axial collapse load in velocity of 10mm/min and quasi-static collapse load in velocity of 1000mm/min, the collapse characteristics of the hat shaped section and double hat shaped section member have been analyzed by axial collapse tests with respect to the variations of spot weld pitches on the flanges. In addition, the quasi-static collapse simulations have been implemented in the same condition to the experiment's using FEM package, LS-DYNA3D. The simulated results have been verified in comparison with these from the quasi-static axial collapse tests. With the computational approaches the optimal energy absorbing structures can be suggested. Simulations are so helpful that the optimized data be supplied in designing vehicles in advance.

  • Steel bar breaking system is a component of a sled test system for automobile crashworthiness. It is a recent idea for the sled test. In a sled test, a crash pulse is given as a input made from a real test. The steel bar breaking system is designed to generate a certain crash pulse. Orthogonal arrays from design of experiments (DOE) are employed. The factors of the array are panel thickness and the number of steel bars, and the levels are candidate values of them. A simulation is utilized for the crash analysis. A commercial system called LS/DYNA3D is adopted. A test system is designed based on the results.
