  • In this paper the Hoek-Brown (HB) failure criterion is integrated into the Holmquist-Johnson-Cook (HJC) concrete material model to reflect the inherent characteristics of field rock masses in LS-DYNA blast modeling. This is intended to emphasize the distinctive characteristics of field rock masses that usually have many geological discontinuities. The replacement is made only for the static strength part of the HJC material model by using a statistical curve fitting technique, and its procedure is described in detail. An example is also given to illustrate the use of the obtained HJC material model. Computation is performed for a plane strain model of a single-hole blasting on a field limestone by using the combination of the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) technique and the multi-material arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (MMALE) method in LS-DYNA.

  • In this study, two fracture toughness test procedures are modelled for selected metal and rock on LS-DYNA, which is a commercial finite element code. The tests are conducted by using the 3-point bend test procedure for rectangular bar specimen. Because it takes a relatively long time to conduct the test, the implicit solver based on the Newmark method is adopted for the analyses. The values of stress intensity factor obtained from the analyses are 73 and $0.3MPa.m^{0.5}$ for the metal and rock material, respectively. It can be thought that the resulting small value of the fracture toughness of the rock material model well represents the brittleness of rock material.

  • Recently, as the demand for development and utilization of underground space is increasing worldwide, the blast damaged zone has become a major issue in constructing underground structures. In this study, to verify the explosion modelling method for blast-damaged zone (BDZ) around underground cavern, a series of small-scale test blasts was conducted using the concept of momentum trap. According to the test results, the input parameters to the numerical model (ANSYS LS-DYNA) were corrected. It is concluded that the suggested method of miniature blasting and numerical modelling using the MT concept well simulates the velocity of the MT projectile under given conditions.

  • Recently, as the demand for development and utilization of underground space is increasing worldwide, the blast damaged zone has become a major issue in constructing underground structures. In this study, numerical analyses were performed for modelling a small-scale blasting of rock plates using PFC3D and ANSYS LS-DYNA. In order to verify the analysis results, several test blasts were conducted. It is concluded from the study that the numerical modelling methods well simulate the crack propagation procedure near blast holes under given conditions.

  • Rockburst is a sudden and violent failure of rock. During the failure process, excess energy is liberated as seismic energy, which in turn causes the surrounding rock mass to vibrate. The level of the ground vibration can reach a magnitude of over 4.5 in the Richter local scale. Thus, a rockburst can cause not only injury to persons, but also damage to both underground workings and surface structures. In this paper the source mechanism of rockburst is analyzed based mainly on the two reports of the Canadian Rockburst Research Program (CRRP). A simplified LS-DYNA modeling is also performed to identify the tensile failure patterns occurring in the remaining rock mass right after blasting in mine stope. The configuration of the simplified model will probably be useful in small-scale laboratory tests for investigating the source mechanism of rockburst.

  • Recently, the shock resistance and dynamic characteristics of hard disk drives have become more important due to their highly increased storage density and miniaturization. In this study, we have developed an ANSYS/Mechanical/LS-DYNA based HDD vibration/shock simulation tool for design engineers. This simulation tool using ANSYS APDL can produce a parametric finite element modeling of HDD automatically and has GUI-based applications using the script program language Tcl/Tk. In the present tool, we adopt the reliable methodology of vibration/shock simulation, which is experimentally verified. It is expected that this simulation tool can make the repetitive computational efforts for the shock-proof design of HDD drastically reduced.

  • In this paper, a coupling scheme for applying finite element analysis(FEA) programs, such as, LS-DYNA and MIDAS/Civil, to a nonlinear soil structure interaction analysis by the boundary reaction method(BRM) is presented. With the FEA programs, the structure and soil media are discretized by linear or nonlinear finite elements. To absorb the outgoing elastic waves to unbounded soil region as much as possible, the PML elements and viscous-spring elements are used at the outer FE boundary, in the LS-DYNA model and in MIDAS/Civil model, respectively. It is also assumed that all the nonlinear elements in the problem are limited to structural region. In this study, the boundary reaction forces for the use in the BRM are calculated using the KIESSI-3D program by solving soil-foundation interaction problem subjected to incident seismic waves. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated with a linear SSI seismic analysis problem by comparing the BRM solution with the conventional SSI solution. Numerical comparison indicates that the BRM can effectively be applied to a nonlinear soil-structure analysis if motions at the foundation obtained by the BRM for a linear SSI problem excluding the nonlinear structure is conservative.

  • In this study, the structural performance of nuclear power plant containment buildings, which are made of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) and subject to aircraft crash, is examined by finite element analyses. The applied loads by aircraft crash against the buildings are modeled using Riera impact load function and by the varying aircraft contact area with respect to time. CSCM concrete model in LS-DYNA is employed to model SFRC. The parameters for the material model are determined from SFRC strength prediction models. Based on the volume ratio of steel fiber in SFRC, the structural performance of nuclear containment buildings subject to aircraft crash are analysed using a commercial finite element analysis program LS-DYNA. The safety assessments of the buildings subject to the crash are discussed and the effectiveness of SFRC for nuclear power plant containment building on the increase of aircraft crash resistance is also evaluated.

  • In this study we proposed a simplified finite element model of anchor bolt system inserted through concrete structures considering clamping forces. The three different finite element types using LS-DYNA are applied for numerical efficiency of the anchor bolt modeling. Combined beam and solid elements are used to reflect the tension state at internal part of anchor bolt due to torques. The clamping forces due to torques are considered by introducing a compression for a nut plane modeled by beam elements. The numerical examples show good agreement with different element types. Parametric studies are focused on the various effects of different element types on the induced axial and shear forces of anchor bolts considering clamping forces.
