  • Although the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method is an advanced design approach, it does not accurately capture the interaction between individual members and structural system. A nonlinear inelastic analysis for the entire structure is required to solve this problem. According to many design codes of advanced countries, a nonlinear inelastic analysis can be applied to predict the structural behavior and strength reasonably. In this study, an LRFD design method using practical nonlinear inelastic analysis was proposed. Design examples using the proposed method waspresented, and the economical efficiency and adequacy of the proposed method was investigated by comparing the design results with that of the AISC-LRFD. It has been consequently demonstrated that the proposed method can reduce the construction cost through savings in steel.

  • A reliability analysis of the fatigue failure of highway steel bridges was performed by applying the Miner's fatigue damage rule for the fatigue design truck proposed for the LRFD code and for the current DB 24 truck. The limit state function for fatigue failure is expressed as a function of various random variables that affect fatigue damage. Among these variables, the statistical parameters for the equivalent moment, the impact factor, and the loadometer were obtained by analyzing recently measured domestic traffic data, and the parameters for the fatigue strength, the girder distribution factor, and the headway factor were obtained from the measured data reported in literature. Based on the reliability analysis, the fatigue truck model for the LRFD code was proposed. After applying the proposed fatigue truck to the LRFD code, 16 composite plate and box girder bridges were designed based on the LRFD method, and the LRFD design results for the fatigue limit state were compared with those by the current KHBDC.

  • The limit states design method is replacing the allowable stress design method worldwide, e.g. the design code of ISO and various construction codes of Korea are adopting the reliability based limit state method. This paper proposed LRFD design value which is one of limit states design method for the PHC bored pile used as building foundation. This paper analysed 81 load test results and the bearing design(Meyerhof method & SPT-CPT conversion method), and proposed LRFD value for each design reliability Index 2.33 and 3.0 for PHC bored pile. LRFD value of PHC bored pile represents 0.36~0.44 for Meyerhof method and 0.24~0.31 for SPT-CPT conversion method according to the deign reliability index.

  • When designing fixed jacket structures, overseas design standards are applied due to the absence of domestic design methods. Although the US API standards are mainly applied, API RP 2A suggests two design methods: the allowable stress design method (WSD) and the load resistance coefficient method (LRFD), and is applied according to the designer's judgment. In this study, the stress ratio of the two design methods was reviewed and compared using SACS, an analysis program dedicated to marine structures, for fixed marine structures actually installed on the domestic coast. As a result of the review, it was found that the LRFD design method showed a greater stress ratio for extreme load analysis and transportation analysis, and the WSD design method showed a greater stress ratio for loading and lifting. Therefore, when applying the design method, it is considered appropriate to select the final design method considering safety and economic feasibility after conducting an applicability review for the two design methods.

  • Most of the steel bridges in Korea are being currently designed by the allowable stress design method that uses the conventional deterministic factors of safety. However the limit state design based on the concept of probability, statistics and reliability engineering is becoming very popular as a global standard deign method, leading the rational and economic bridge design. As part of the fundamental research to establish the load and resistance factor design(LRFD) of steel bridges considering domestic environmental conditions and regional characteristics, an experimental design is conducted by applying AASHTO-LRFD specification especially to a steel closed-box girder, which occupies relatively a large portion of steel bridges in Korea. Throughout the experimental design according to various sectional changes, some of the issues to be considered in the LRFD design of a composite steel closed-box girder bridge are examined. In this process, an Excel-based design verification program is developed for easy computation and prevention of errors. Quantitative reliability levels of the bridge sections designed by LRFD are also estimated using a reliability analysis method, and compared with the target reliability indexes applied in the LRFD design to verify the validity of the procedure and methodology used in this study.

  • In this study steel box girders used as main members of a two span continuous steel bridge, are optimally designed by a Load and Resistance Factor Design method(LRFD) using an numerical optimization method. The width, height, web thickness and flange thickness of the main girder are set as design variables, and light weight design is attempted by choosing the cross-sectional area as an object function. We studied the results of steel box girders and compared with those of 1-type girders. The main program is coded with C++ and connected with optimization modul ADS. which is coded with FORTRAN.

  • The reliability analysis of simply-supported and continuous composite plate girder and box girder bridges under flexure was performed to provide a basic data for the development of LRFD c ode. The bridges were designed based on LRFD specification with newly proposed design live load which was developed by analyzing traffic statistics from highways and local roads. A performance function for flexural failure was expressed as a function of the flexural resistance of composite section and the design moments due to permanent load and live load. For the flexural resistance, the statistical parameters obtained by analyzing over 16,000 domestic structural steel samples were used. Several different values of bias factors for the live load moment from 1.0 to 1.2 were used. Due to the lack of available domestic measured data on the moment by permanent loads, the same statistical properties used in the calibration of ASHTO-LRFD were ap plied. The reliability indices for the composite girder bridges with various span lengths, different live load factors, and bias fact or for the live load were obtained by applying the Rackwitz-Fiessler technique.

  • Jack-up drilling rigs are widely used in the offshore oil and gas exploration industry. Although originally designed for use in shallow waters, trends in the energy industry have led to a growing demand for their use in deep sea and harsh environmental conditions. To extend the operating range of jack-up units, their design must be based on reliable analysis while eliminating excessive conservatism. In current industrial practice, jack-up drilling rigs are designed using the working(or allowable) stress design (WSD) method. Recently, classifications have been developed for specific regulations based on the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method, which emphasises the reliability of the methods. This statistical method utilises the concept of limit state design and uses factored loads and resistance factors to account for uncertainly in the loads and computed strength of the leg components in a jack-up drilling rig. The key differences between the LRFD method and the WSD method must be identified to enable appropriate use of the LRFD method for designing jack-up rigs. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare and quantitatively investigate the differences between actual jack-up lattice leg structures, which are designed by the WSD and LRFD methods, and subject to different environmental load-to-dead-load ratios, thereby delineating the load-to-capacity ratios of rigs designed using theses methods under these different enviromental conditions. The comparative results are significantly advantageous in the leg design of jack-up rigs, and determine that the jack-up rigs designed using the WSD and LRFD methods with UC values differ by approximately 31 % with respect to the API-RP code basis. It can be observed that the LRFD design method is more advantageous to structure optimization compared to the WSD method.

  • This paper investigated the accuracy of the current design formulae for the elastic buckling strength of web-tapered I-beams in AISC-LRFD specification. The basic concept is to replace a tapered beam by an equivalent prismatic beam with a different length, but with a cross section identical to that of the smaller end of the tapered beam. The modification factor, B, is used to account for the stress gradient within the unbraced length and the lateral restraining effects offered by the adjacent segments. The modification factor(B) suggested in AISC-LRFD specification was compared with the finite element method(FEM) results. This paper presented a redefined method to calculate the modification factor(B).

  • The inelastic design of the three-span continuous composite plate girder with consideration of moment redistribution over the interior pier is performed using the LRFD method. The design of the girder section, based on the inelastic method, is compared with that by the conventional elastic design. The length of the center span for the three-span continuous bridge ranges from 40m to 70m and the relative ratio of the span length is assumed to be 4:5:4. Although the AASHTO- LRFD specifications are applied in the design of the composite girder, the recently proposed new design live load is used. After determining the maximum positive and negative sections by the elastic design for various limit states, the amount of moment redistributed to the maximum positive moment section is calculated. With the increased design moment due to moment redistribution from the interior pier, the maximum positive section designed by the elastic method is checked for the strength limit state and the service limit state. The maximum negative moment section is redesigned by reducing the size of the steel girder relative to the section designed by the elastic method and the new section is checked for the service limit state. Based on the design results for the five bridges considered in this study, it is estimated that about 23% of steel can be saved in the interior pier section if it is designed by the inelastic method compared with that designed by the elastic method.
