  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is used in spark ignition (SI) engines. Fuel injection rate of an injector is affected by fuel temperature and pressure in LPG liquid injection systems for either a multi-point-injection (MPI) or a direct injection (DI) engine. Even fuel injection conditions are varied, the air-fuel ratio should be accurately controlled to reduce exhaust emissions. In this study, a correction factor fur the fuel injection rate of an injector is derived from density ratio and pressure difference ratio. A compensation method of injected fuel amount is proposed for a fuel injection control system. The experimental results for the LPG liquid injection system in a SI engine show that this system works well fur a full range of engine speed and load condition, and the air-fuel ratio is accurately controlled by the proposed correction factor.

  • The gaseous fuel injection(GFI) type of LPG fuel-supply system is more advantageous than liquefied fuel injection(LFI) from the viewpoint of durability and cost reduction. However, compared with LFI types of LPG fuel-supply systems, in the GFI systems it is difficult to achieve precision fuel metering because of the compressible characteristic of the gaseous fuel. In this study, a Helmholtz resonator is proposed as an appropriate system for precision fuel metering in GFI systems, and the effects of the Helmholtz resonator on the fuel metering are simulated by the commercial flow-network-analysis package Flowmaster.

  • Finding an alternative fuel and reducing environmental pollution are the main goals for future internal combustion engines. The purpose of this study is to obtain low-emission and high-efficiency by hydrogen enriched LPG fuel in a LPG engine. An experimental study was carried out to obtain fundamental data for the emit HC emission characteristics at cold start of pre-mixed LPG and hydrogen in a LPG engine with various fractions of hydrogen-LPG blends. To maintain equal volume ratio of fuel blend, the amount of HC was decreased as hydrogen was gradually added. The results showed that as hydrogen increases, in-cylinder pressure increased. Also emission of unburned hydrocarbon (HC) is sharply decreased.

  • Compressed natural gas (CNG) is well known as one of the cleanest burning alternative fuels. Bi-fuel CNG vehicle can also run on gasoline or another fuel while dedicated natural gas vehicle is designed to run on natural gas only. Recently, increased attention has been focused on bi-fuel CNG/LPG taxi because of good fuel economy of CNG. A number of LPG taxis modified to CNG Bi-fuel vehicles are running in many cities. In this paper, the emissions characteristics of in-use passenger cars running on CNG and LPG were investigated. Chassis dynamometer test was used to measure exhaust emissions from an in-use fleet of 5 cars. Exhaust emissions were collected for CVS-75 driving mode. The test results showed that for CNG fuel mode, CO, $CO_2$ and NMHC emissions decreased to 9%, 12% and 14% respectively, and $CH_4$ and $NO_x$ emissions increased to 317% and 47% respectively.

  • Finding an alternative fuel and reducing environmental pollution are the main goals for future internal combustion engines. The purpose of this study is to obtain low-emission and high-efficiency by hydrogen enriched LPG fuel in constant volume chamber. An experimental study was carried out to obtain fundamental data for the combustion and emission characteristics of pre-mixed hydrogen and LPG in a constant volume chamber (CVC) with various fractions of hydrogen-LPG blends. To maintain equal heating value of fuel blend, the amount of LPG was decreased as hydrogen was gradually added. Exhaust emissions were measured using a HORIBA exhaust gas analyzer for various fractions of hydrogen-LPG blends. The results showed that the rapid combustion duration was shortened, and the rate of heat release elevated as the hydrogen fraction in the fuel blend was increased. Moreover, the maximum rate of pressure rise also increased. These phenomena were attributed to the burning velocity which increased exponentially with the increased hydrogen fraction in the $H_2$-LPG fuel blend. Exhaust HC and $CO_2$ concentrations decreased, while NOX emission increased with an increase in the hydrogen fraction in the fuel blend. Our results could facilitate the application of hydrogen and LPG as a fuel in the current fossil hydrocarbon-based economy and the strict emission regulations in internal combustion engines.

  • Currently, BLDC fuel pump was applied on LPi vehicle using 3rd fuel supply system as liquified phase LPG injection method had already shown better performance than others. Its cost, however, is rather expensive because of drawbacks such as complicated structure, a fault of localization of system. In this work, demonstration system for a developed turbine type fuel pump to replace BLDC system was setup and investigated. This study results that fuel mass flow rate of turbine type pump and injection performance of injector were better compared to BLDC type. Comparing flow rate of summer LPG with that of winter LPG, the flow rate decreased about 25% using winter LPG. Performance applying turbine type LPi fuel pump to engine is confirmed.

  • In order to find out the potential of LP gas as a substitute fuel for small fm engine, experiments were carried out with a four-stroke spark-ignition engine which was modified from a kerosene engine mounted on the power tiller. Performance characteristics of kerosene and LP gas engine such as torque, volumetric efficiency fuel consumption rate, brake thermal efficiency, exhaust temperature, and carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions were measured and analyzed under various levels of engine speed and compression ratio. The results were summarized as follows. 1. It showed that forque of LPG engine was 41% lower than that of kerosene engine with the same compression ratio, but LPG engine with compression ratio of 8.5 it was showed similar torque level to kerosene engine with compression ratio of 4.5. 2. Fuel consumption of LPG engine was reduced by about 5.1% and thermal efficiency was improved by about 2% compared with kerosene engine with the same compression ratio. With the incrasing of compression ratio in LPG engine fuel consumption rate decreased and thermal efficiency increased. 3. Exhaust temperature of LPG engine was about 15% lower than that of kerosene engine. Concenrations of emissions from LPG engine was affected insignificantly by compression ratios, and carbon monoxide emissions from the LPG engine was not affected by engine speed so much. The carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions from LPG engine were about 94% and 66% lower than those of kerosene engine, respectively.

  • In recent years, the need for more fuel-efficient and lower-emission vehicles has driven the technical development of alternative fuels such as LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) which is able to meet the limits of better emission levels without many modifications to current engine design. LPG has a high vapor pressure and lower viscosity and surface tension than diesel and gasoline fuels. These different fuel characteristics make it difficult to directly apply the conventional gasoline or diesel fuel pump. Self acting lubricated groove design or coating can be used in high-speed and high precision spindle system like a roller-vane type fuel pump, because of its advantages such as low frictional loss, low heat generation, averaging effect leading better running accuracy and simplicity in manufacturing. Those design method can also affect the atomization of fuel from the injector and the formation of fuel film on the intake manifold. In this study, experiments are carried out to get performance characteristics of initial and steady state operation, The characteristics of vane type fuel pump were investigated to access the applicability on LPLi engine.

  • This research investigated spray characteristics using LPG fuel under compression ignition to contribute to develop a high efficiency LPG fuel is an environmentally-friendly fuel since it emits lower $CO_2$ compare to other conventional fuels. In order to observe spray process, a high speed digital camera and high pressure common-rail injector were applied. Using the spray behaviors of LPG and diesel fuel from the experiment, this research analyzed the mixing process of air-fuel mixture numerically with FLUENT 6.3 when LPG and diesel fuel injected directly into the cylinder while compression stroke occurs. Spray characteristics of LPG fuel was investigated by using numerical method, in which KH-RT model was adapted for phase change. As a result of numerical analysis, this work found out that LPG spray has a wider mixing formation and uniform diffusion of air-fuel mixture compare to diesel.
