Mode analysis is very important for the development of liquid rocket engine in various applications. We developed a mode analysis program for the gas-generator cycle liquid rocket engine by proposing 13 independent equations with 13 independent variables which can be solved by Newton method. As an example we calculated the change of engine operating mode according to the control valve's loss coefficient change located in the gas-generator oxidizer supply line. And we concluded that this program can give basic idea for the mode analysis of gas-generator cycle liquid rocket engine.

As a interstage of the 30tonf level LOx/kerosene liquid rocket engine development, turbopump-gas generator open-loop coupled tests are performed. Test schematic and test results of open-loop coupled tests are presented. In engine system operation environment simulating combustion chamber by flow control orifice, chill-down procedure, startup characteristics, nominal operability of turbopump+gas generator open-loop coupled Test Plant are confirmed The results of open-loop coupled test were used for the preparation on turbopump+gas generator closed-loop test.

For the development of the 30tonf level LOx/kerosene liquid rocket engine, turbopump-gas generator closed-loop coupled tests are performed. To simulate engine operation conditions, combustion chamber was substituted by flow control orifices. In simulated engine system operation environment, chill-down procedure, startup characteristics, nominal operability of turbopump+gas generator coupled Test Plant are confirmed. Turbopump and gas generator are confirmed to operate well in simulated engine environment. The control system for regulating power and mixture ratio of Test Plant are also successfully confirmed.

It is critical to set up the starting sequence of liquid rocket engines because not carefully arranged process can lead the engine damages. Thus, many efforts were made to prevent the hard start at the ignition. Hypergolic fuels are frequently used to ignite LRE and TEAL, one of the hypergolic fuel is also used for kerosene-LOx LRE ignition. However, since we are still lack of experiences igniting oxygen rich preburners of the staged combustion cycle engines, it would be helpful to estimate the TEAL ignition phenomena before the actual tests.

An analysis has been made on the performance variation due to pressure drop change at propellant supply pipes of liquid rocket engine. The objective is to compare the effectiveness of control variables to tune the liquid rocket engine performance. The mode analysis program has been used to estimate the engine performance for different modes which is realized by controlling the flow rate of propellant. The oxidizer of combustion chamber, the fuel of combustion chamber, the oxidizer of gas generator and the fuel of gas generator are the independent variables to control engine thrust, engine mixture ratio and temperature of gas generator product gas. The analysis program is validated by comparing with the powerpack test results. The error range of compared variables is order of 4%. After comparison of tuning effectiveness it is turned out that the pressure drop at oxidizer pipe of gas generator and pressure drop at combustion chamber fuel pipe and the pressure drop at the fuel pipe of gas generator can effectively tune the thrust of engine, mixture ratio of engine and temperature of product gas from gas generator respectively.

Effects of the nozzle wall angles on the supersonic flow field in a thrust optimized nozzle were numerically investigated. The combustor and operating condition of 30-tonf rocket engine was selected to study the optimum nozzle shape. The nozzle flow of combustion products was realized by the shifting equilibrium calculation for the propellant of kerosene-LOx. The change of nozzle wall angles induced different developing patterns of the internal and secondary shock wave. The optimum nozzle was obtained when the internal shock was in a specific position at the nozzle outlet. The nozzle wall angles of the optimum nozzle were very similar to those of the optimum nozzle which does not consider the shock wave.
The performance analysis of the small satellites launch vehicle using the electric pump cycle as the upper stage engines was performed. The first stage is the launch vehicle that uses the test launch vehicle of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II and the second stage employs elecpump cycle engine that uses liquid methane and kerosene (RP-1) as fuel. A model for the mass estimation was presented and the analysis was conducted for the range of thrust of 20 to 40 kN and combustion pressure of 3 to 6 MPa with a nozzle expansion ratio of 60 to 100. The mixture ratio with the maximum velocity increment was calculated and the performance of the LEO and SSO payload were calculated from the stage mass estimation. In both the cases, liquid methane, and RP-1 showed maximum payload for 20 kN thrust, 3 MPa combustion pressure, and the nozzle expansion ratio of 100, with a mixture ratio of 3.49 for liquid methane and 2.75 for RP-1. In addition, the ditching points of the first stage and the fairing in the LEO mission were analyzed using ASTOS.
A liquid rocket engine goes through many tests to prove its performance before liftoff. It means the tests for setting ignition and start-up conditions or a test on design condition, which verifies the design performance. However, the development process requires verification of performance under off-design conditions through tests involving different operating conditions, which affects the duration of engine development. The off-design performance test is performed by altering the conditions of the propellant supplied to the engine in conjunction with the engine performance test that varies the opening of the control valves in the engine. This paper is based on the results of the engine tests performed at the KSLV-II engine test facilities in the Naro Space Center and describes the operations of the test facility for off-design condition test that changes the inlet conditions of the turbo-pump due to changes in the pressure and temperature of the propellant supplied to the test engines.

Experimental studies on determination of the supply leading time of propellants to combustion chamber have been made to stably and efficiently guarantee the ignitions process with liquid rocket engine. The propellant used is a Kerosene as fuel and a liquid oxygen as oxidizer. FOOF type of three injectors are set with an angle of 135。 and the combustion chamber pressure is 200psi. The present experiment program also includes the stability on the quadlet type of ignitor using the triehylaluminum (TEAL) as an ignition source. Experimental results clarifies that the propellant supply through LOx leading to combustion chamber is proper for stable ignition and combustion processes based on the fuel and oxidizer manifold pressures, combustion chamber pressure, and the variation of flame length from the nozzle exit with lapse time, and shows that the leading supply time pf propellants effects the engine performance little.

In this paper the development directions of the next generation launch vehicle program following KSLV-II has been discussed, which are to be executed after year 2020 according to the Medium and Long Term Plan for National Space Development. Also, several areas of technology advancement have been identified for the successful development of the LVs. The next generation LV must aim for not only the high performance but also for low cost as well as high reliability in order to compete against global commercial launch service providers. To this end, the next generation LVs program shall capitalize on many anticipated accomplishments of the KSLV-II program such as the 75 ton class LOX/kerosene rocket engine.
