Death Acceptance and Religion in the Case of Koreans (한국인의 죽음 수용과 종교)

  • This paper analyzes the relationship between death acceptance and religion using a national data set of 1,000 respondents. Death acceptance conceptually contrasts with death anxiety, but is recently preferred by death researchers due to its relatively neutral connotations. This research looks into the relationship between death acceptance and religion as most previous research thereon has been unable to suggest some definitive conclusion, using the LOWESS technique, path analysis, etc.. According to the result, the religious, women and the older are more death-accepting than the irreligious, men, and the younger respectively. Education forms a complex and curvy-linear relationship with death acceptance; at the level of graduate education and higher, the respondents get more death-accepting. By religion, Protestants turn out more death-accepting than Buddhists. Should this kind of research continue, the results may be applicable to determine optimal ways to approach the population with extreme attitudes towards death.

Smoking Trajectories among Koreans in Seoul and California: Exemplifying a Common Error in Age Parameterization

  • Immigration to a nation with a stronger anti-smoking environment has been hypothesized to make smoking less common. However, little is known about how environments influence risk of smoking across the lifecourse. Research suggested a linear decline in smoking over the lifecourse but these associations, in fact, might not be linear. This study assessed the possible nonlinear associations between age and smoking and examined how these associations differed by environment through comparing Koreans in Seoul, South Korea and Korean Americans in California, United States. Data were drawn from population based telephone surveys of Korean adults in Seoul (N=500) and California (N=2,830) from 2001-2002. Locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (lowess) was used to approximate the association between age and smoking with multivariable spline logistic regressions, including adjustment for confounds used to draw population inferences. Smoking differed across the lifecourse between Korean and Korean American men. The association between age and smoking peaked around 35 years among Korean and Korean American men. From 18 to 35 the probability of smoking was 57% higher (95%CI, 40 to 71) among Korean men versus 8% (95%CI, 3 to 19) higher among Korean American men. A similar difference in age after 35, from 40 to 57 years of age, was associated with a 2% (95%CI, 0 to 10) and 20% (95%CI, 16 to 25) lower probability of smoking among Korean and Korean American men. A nonlinear pattern was also observed among Korean American women. Social role transitions provide plausible explanations for the decline in smoking after 35. Investigators should be mindful of nonlinearities in age when attempting to understand tobacco use.

Trend Analysis for River Water Quality Change Before and After the Prohibition of Ocean Dumping of Livestock Manure (가축분뇨 해양투기 금지 전후 하천 수질 변동 경향성 분석)

  • Ocean dumping manure was prohibited in Korea until the end of 2012. Undumped manure was treated by resourcification, purification, and public process in a facility. But poor storage of untreated manure and overproduced compost can pollute river water. In this study, linear regression, Mann-Kendall, Seasonal Mann-Kendall, LOWESS trend, and Spearman's correlation analysis were conducted for investigating the changes in the water quality of Bukhan and Imjin river before and after the prohibition of ocean dumping. In 2017, the Imjin Riv er basin had more than 5.7 times liv estock breeding heads than the Bukhan Riv er basin and more than 3.5 times livestock manure. The areas of land, farmland, and nutrient balance were also higher in the Imjin River basin. Since the two basins have different environments, it is expected that the characteristics of changes in water quality due to the increase in livestock manure generation and treatment methods will be different when comparing the water quality trends before and after the ban. The result of the trend analysis revealed a decrease in EC before the ban but an increase afterward. T-N and BOD of Imjin river increased slightly before the ban but demonstrated great enhancement thereafter. Other sites and T-P exhibited no trend. The correlation analysis result showed that the increase in the number of livestock rearing was correlated with the increase in T-P of Bukhan River and BOD of Imjin River. The increase in livestock manure production was not correlated with the Imjin River basin, while a correlation was observed with the Bukhan River with an increase in T-N and EC and the decrease in T-P.
