  • In this paper, we propose a simple open loop transmit diversity (TD) scheme for the wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) systems in Rician multipath fading channels such as rural area or satellite channels where line-of-sight (LOS) paths are in presence. The proposed scheme does not require any pre-processing of transmit data, resulting in simpler structure as compared to conventional closed loop transmit adaptive array (TxAA) and open loop space-time transmit diversity (STTD). We analytically derive the probability density function of signal-to-noise ratio at the Rake receiver output and the uncoded bit error rate performance of the proposed scheme. Extensive simulation is Performed to verify the analytical performance of the proposed scheme under typical Rician multipath fading channel environments. Moreover, comparative results with the conventional TxAA and STTD are also provided. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme shows slightly better performance than the conventional open loop STTD under the channels with very weak LOS components, however, it significantly outperforms the STTD under the channels with dominant LOS components, and achieves a close performance of ideal closed loop TxAA.

  • Recently, ultra-wideband (UWB) technology based on the transmission of short duration pulses has gained much interest for its application to wireless communications. UWB small scale channel modeling work, including statistical characterization and potential models, are discussed. The significance, in terms of performance, of the channel impulse response model chosen for the simulation of UWB communications systems is also evaluated. Three traditional models are found to be useful for modeling NLOS UWB channels, but not LOS channels. In this paper, a new model for LOS UWB channels is presented and shown to represent LOS channels much more accurately than the traditional models.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm for optimal selection of communications for smart lighting in heterogeneous networks. The smart lighting can be used for information communications and lighting simultaneously. To improve BER performance of smart lighting in heterogeneous networks, it adaptively selects a communication method among OCC, Wi-Fi, BLE based on distance between sensors and smart lightings, low power consumption for user requirements, operating time of smart lighting in Line-of-Sight(LOS)/Non-LOS channels. Thus, simulation results demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed algorithm contrary to baseline methods in LOS/NLOS channels.

  • With the advent of the fifth-generation (5G) era, Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems have experienced the rapid development. Recently, the performance analysis models of Massive MIMO relay systems have been proposed, which are mostly based on Rayleigh fading channels. In order to create a more suitable model for 5G Internet of Things scenarios, our study is based on the Rician fading channels, where line-of-sight (LOS) path exists in the channels. In this paper, we assume the channel state information (CSI) is perfect. In this case, we use statistical information to derive the analytical exact closed-form expression for the achievable sum rate of the uplink for the Massive MIMO two-hop relay system over Rician fading channels. Moreover, considering the different communication scenarios, we derive the analytical exact closed-form expression for the achievable sum rates of the uplink for other three scenarios. Finally, based on these expressions, we make simulations and analyze the performance under different transmit powers and Rician-factors, which provides a theoretical basis and reference for further research.

  • We present a statistical model for the path loss of ultrawideband (UWB) channels in indoor environments. In contrast to our previously reported measurements, the data reported here are for a bandwidth of 6GHz rather than 1.25GHz; they encompass commercial buildings in addition to single-family homes (20 of each); and local spatial averaging is included. As before, the center frequency is 5.0GHz. Separate models are given for commercial and residential environments and, within each category, for lineof sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLS) paths. All four models have the same mathematical structure, differing only in their numerical parameters. The two new models (LOS and NLS) for residences closely match those derived from the previous measurements, thus affirming the stability of our path loss modeling. We find, also, that the path loss statistics for the two categories of buildings are quite similar.

  • In this paper, performance of DSRC systems is analyzed with considering the real roads and height of vehicles. The channels are modeled as 2-Ray and 4-Ray with a direct wave and reflected waves by a road and buildings in a physical layer because DSRC keeps LOS propagation characteristics, and the pass loss for each model is calculated respectively. Rician factor is obtained through the calculated path loss on two models for DSRC, and the performance of the systems is analyzed in AWGN and Rician fading channels, Impulsive noise and Rician fading channels respectively. As a result, in Rician fading channels with impulsive noise(A=0.2, ${\Gamma}^{\prime}=0.22$), BER is below $10^{-6}$ when the distance is farther than 80[m] and 40[m] in 2-Ray model and 4-Ray model respectively. For performance improvement, BCH coding scheme and MRC diversity scheme are adopted.

  • In this paper, we analyze the outage probability of full duplex relay (FDR) with decode-and-forward (DF) protocol is derived under fading channels. The fading channel for source-relay link is assumed to be Rician fading to consider the infrastructured fixed relay with line of sight (LOS) propagation, and the other fading channels are assumed to be Rayleigh fading. Based on this analytical result, we provide the criterion that FDR shows a lower outage probability than HDR to consider the interference problem and the resource efficiency improvement by full duplex (FD) operation. The accuracy of the analysis is confirmed throughout the simulation results.

  • A different alternative method for simulating bit error rate(BER) performance of Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting(DMB) in tunnel environments is presented. The method based on a channel model obtained by ray-tracing is able to support BER estimation over the channel presents arbitrary statistics that are difficult to fit to an analytic expression. The BER performance for System E over the tunnel fading channel that obtained by ray-tracing is predicted by the monte-carlo method. It can be observed that the BER performance for a straight tunnel channel is better than that for a line-of-sight(LOS) area in curved tunnel. Also, the BER performance for LOS areas in a curved tunnel outperforms that for non-line-of-sight(NLOS) areas in a curved tunnel. The BER performances for straight, curved LOS and curved NLOS tunnel channels are better than that for a Rayleigh channel(K=0) and less than that for a Rician channel with K=3. Moreover, for BER=10-3, it can be seen that there is approximately a $1{\sim}1.5\;dB$ difference between those three types of tunnel channels and a Rayleigh channel.

  • The adaptive coded modulation (ACM) is a promissing way to provide a substantial improvement in spectral efficiency for slow fading channels. The basic idea is to adapt system functional-ity such as modulation, coding, information rate, and transmission power to varying channel conditions. In this work, the potential of adaptive coded modulation is investigated using cut-off rate anal-ysis in a unified way and using computer simulation. The anal-ysis includes various effects of fading channels such as feedback delay and channel prediction error. It was shown that the adaptive coded modulation can provide several folds of increase in spectral efficiency compared to a fixed coded-modulation system employing QPSK when channel varies slowly.

  • As wireless communication technology advances to ensure high accuracy and safety at high speeds, research and development of Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology has been accelerated as an alternative to traditional radio frequency (RF) technology. As the radio spectrum of RF communication becomes more congested and demand for bandwidth continues to increase, VLCs that can use unlicensed frequency band are proposed as a solution. However, VLC channels have broadcasting characteristics that make them easily exposed to eavesdropping and jamming attacks, and are vulnerable to MITM (Man-In-The-Middle) due to their line of sight (LOS) propagation characteristics. These attacks on VLC channels compromise the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of communications links and data, resulting in higher data retransmission rates, reducing throughput and increasing power consumption, resulting in lower data transmission efficiency. In this work, we model vulnerable VLC channels to analyze the impact of attacks and communications vulnerabilities by malicious jammers.
