  • This paper describes the structural analysis and optimization of stiffeners used in inner tanks for liquid natural gas (LNG) storage, so that the costs can be minimized while the critical buckling load of the inner tank still exceeds the external pressure exerted by the perlite. The original calculation of perlite pressure applied to the inner tank was based on Zick's code, which led to the overestimation of the external pressure, and consequently, an oversized stiffener. In this study, the effects of the material properties of perlite on the external pressure distribution are scrutinized, and the optimum dimensions of a single stiffener are finally obtained through a series of parametric studies. A 15% decrease in the cost of the stiffener compared with the original design is achieved.

  • Internal pipes technology for LNG Storage tank developed because of the perceived safety risk of having an opening near the base of the shell. This is because the shell at this point is the most highly stressed component of the primary containment. other, secondary, problems arise because the movement of the tank in this region is also at a maximum. This requires the use of bellows either in the interspace or on the outside of the outer tank. Therefore the internal pipe, through the roof, solves these problems. The loading conditions calculated from design concept are then used to perform a pipe stress analysis. As well as determining the stresses in the internal pipe and checking against allowable stress, it determines the reaction forces at the support positions.

  • Natural gas as a clean fuel of the world demand for the trend is gradually increasing demand for clean energy in the country and there is growing interest. Therefore, LNG storage tanks and related facilities in the country of the importance of leading a community-based facility has emerged. So common sense that an earthquake with a seismic isolation device LNG storage tank similar to the actual behavior of the analytical model which can describe the development and construction of storage tanks to enhance the safety and economic design techniques need to be developed. In this study, a base isolation system, seismic analysis procedure of LNG storage tanks, and Triple-FPB developed a mathematical model of the present crystallized and complexity factors to the sum over histories model simplifies the complex behavior of the LNG storage tank with base isolation system how to interpret the seismic isolation is proposed.

  • This paper attempts to analyze the effects of promotion of natural gas vehicles (NGVs) on LNG storage facilities and load patterns, and to verify economic feasibilities of NGVs as a DSM (Demand-Side Management) strategy. For these purpose, we have established an econometric mode. Results from the model indicate that natural gas demand in transportation sector will increase continuously, having a 7.84% share in total natural gas demand in 2014. By this analysis, the increased use of NGVs can result in a decreased requirement on the volume of around 1.3 LNG tanks lower in 2014. Also, it shows that TDRs can be reduced by 0.4 for the city gas and by 0.15 for the total LNG in 2014. As a conclusion, we suggest that the promotion of NGVs may play an efficient role as a DSM strategy, and should be considered as a promising strategy to optimize the investment needs in LNG sector as well as an environmental protection measures. Lastly, we acknowledge that a transportation module in our model is based on a Korean government's NGVs promotion plan, not on a market function.

  • CFC-11 and HCFC-l4lb have been used as blowing agents for rigid polyurethane foam insulation of LNG storage tank. But CFC-11 and HCFC- l4lb deplete ozone layer in the stratosphere. So in leading countries, the use of CFC-11 has been prohibited since 1995 and the use of HCFC-l4lb will be prohibited from 2005. Much efforts and studies have been done about alternative blowing agents and insulations blown by alternative blowing agents. This paper deals with polyurethane foams (PUFs) blown by HFC-365mfc, shows their physical and mechanical characteristics and thermal performance. These data are compared with the results of PUFs blown by HCFC-l4lb. From these test results, PUFs blown by HFC-365mfc show good mechanical and thermal characteristics. It is possible to use PUFs blown by HFC-365mfc as main insulation of membrane type LNG storage tank.

  • The objective of this paper is to assess the service life and retrain methods of specimens, which were subjected to carbonation attack, obtained from mix proportion of Sam-cheok LNG storage tank under construction. As the results, accelerated-carbonation penetration depths of 7, 28, 56 ages indicated 4.45, 9.19, 13.37mm, and even considering for cover depths of steel of LNG storage tank under real operation, it was enough. In addition, with carbonation velocity coefficient calculated by carbonation penetration depths, the service life to design cover depth(70, 80, 90, 100mm) of PC outer tank of LNG storage tank was 779, 1017, 1287, 1589 years and 466, 609, 771, 951 years, respectively, considering the $CO_2$ concentration in air which account for the 0.03% and 0.05%. Also, the restrain methods to carbonation attack were feasible through controlling the factors affecting the changes of hydration products such as $Ca(OH)_2$, ion composition in pore solution and matter mobility of organization structures within hardened concrete.

  • Tensile and fracture toughness tests of the cold-rolled STS 304 steel plate for membrane material of LNG storage tank were performed at wide range of temperatures, 11 IK(boiling point of LNG), 153K , 193K and 293K(room temperature). Tensile strength significantly increases with a decrease in temperature, but the yield strength is relatively insensitive to temperature. Elongation at 193K abruptly decreases by 50% of that at 293K, and then decreases slightly in the temperature range of 193K to 111K. Strain hardening exponents at low temperatures are about four times as high as that at 293K. Elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_c$) and tearing modulus($T_{mat}$) tend to decrease with a decrease in temperature. The $J_c$ values are inversely related to effective yield strength in the temperature range of 111K to 293K. These phenomena result from a significant increase in the amount of transformed martensite in low temperature regions.
